Page 5: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

Elba Incorporated is a Not-For-Profit organisation established in 1990 that is operated by our Members

for the benefit of our Members.

Elba was formed by a group of spinal cord injury patients who decided to create their own organisation,

as at the time, their only option was to live at the Quadriplegic Centre in Shenton Park, Western Australia.

They decided to assert their independence and establish and organisation where they were able to

manage their own funding from the Commonwealth Government, which later transferred to the Disability

Service Commission of Western Australia. Their goal was to live in their own homes with independence,

dignity and choice of Support Workers/Carers.

Elba is an endorsed Service Provider for the Disability Services Commission of WA, National Disability

Insurance Agency, National Disability Insurance Scheme WA and the Insurance Commission of WA.

Our Members have a wide range of disabilities with approximate half being wheelchair users who

predominantly have a spinal cord injuries.

We provide support services to enable our Members to live in their own homes with independence and

dignity. Our Human Resources team works in conjunction with each member to ensure a suitable support

worker is employed for that individual. As each individual is unique our HR team strives to match

personality, personal needs and care requirements with those of new support workers.

Elba is able to assist individuals with a wide variety of disabilities, we also support their families to

establish a personalised, innovative, flexible and sustainable service model that provides you with total

control over decision making, how resources are used and above all choice.

I'd like to welcome Elba members, staff, carers, support workers and other guests here today for Elba’s

annual general meeting.

The 2016/17 financial year, along with its many challenges has been a successful year for Elba and its

members. With great team work and communication, Elba has managed to overcome these challenges,

leaving us in a stronger position as a result. With that in mind I would like to thank the entire Elba team

for all of their hard work and continued dedication to the running of Elba.

Both the Board and our administration team have been working very closely with the Disability Services

Commission (DSC), the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and the WA National Disability

Insurance Scheme (WA NDIS) to facilitate the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme

(NDIS) across the disability sector. The commonwealth model of the NDIS the “NDIA” is still in operation

in the Perth hills area with the Head office situated in Midland. The WA NDIS, after being trialed in the

Lower South West of WA, has now expanded into the Cockburn and Kwinana region. The disability

sector is in a constant state of change, there are many variables that need to be overcome in day to day

operations. I appreciate the work of the Elba team to ensure that these changes are managed and

adopted as efficiently as possible, whilst ensuring the service provided to our members exceeds

expectations.

Since the last years AGM the disability sector has become even more competitive. With funded services

being provided in more locations across Western Australia, the number of providers has increased

dramatically. To guarantee Elba remains unique and stands out from the crowd, we have utilized our

new logo and branding to expand our market reach sector wide. The increase in brand awareness has

been very positive!

I will also take this time to acknowledge the passing of a long time Elba member George Little. My

deepest condolences and thoughts go out his Family.

I would also like to acknowledge the following people who have given us great support over the past 12

months; their support and/or advice has proven invaluable to us in navigating through the past year with

the success that we have had.

Mr Ray Bennett - Business Consultant / Bennett Consulting

On a personal note, I'd like to thank all the board members for their continued support throughout the

year and for taking time out of their busy schedules to make sure that Elba Is run smoothly.

I hope everybody enjoys themselves today and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Elba

and everyone involved.

I would like to take a moment now to remember George Little who sadly passed away during the financial

year and to extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Since the rebranding of Elba last year, it has paved a pathway for an influx of new Members to become a

part of the Elba team.

Elba has teamed up with CineAds this financial year to put together an ad campaign that you may have

noticed at the Hoyts Cinemas in Booragoon, Joondalup and Busselton – it is always satisfying to hear

from business associates when they have seen our ad.

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to our Board who have worked hard over the past 12 months, who

without their support Elba would not be the unique organisation it is today.

I would also like to thank:

ELBA INCORPORATED

NOTES TO AND FOR

MING PART OF THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of WA and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (ACNC Act 2012). The committee has determined that the incorporation is not a reporting entity.

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historic costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report.

a. Income Tax

The incorporation is exempt from Income Tax.

b. Office Furniture and Equipment

Equipment and Motor Vehicles are carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

The depreciable amount of all assets is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the incorporation commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

c. Impairment of Assets

At the end of each reporting period, the committee reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, the asset’s carrying amount. Any excess of the asset’s carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement.

d. Employee Benefits

Provision is made for the incorporation’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

e. Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the incorporation has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reliably measured. Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.

f. Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

g. Accounts Receivable and Other Debtors

Accounts receivable and other debtors include amounts due from members as well as amounts receivable from donors. Receivables expected to be collected within 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. All other receivables are classified as non-current assets.

h. Revenue and Other Income

Page | 26

Page 27: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the incorporation is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied.

I. Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the statement of financial position.

j. Financial Assets

Investments in financial assets are initially recognised at cost, which includes transaction costs, and are subsequently measured at fair value, which is equivalent to their market bid price at the end of the reporting period. Movements in fair value are recognised through an equity reserve.

k. Accounts Payable and Other Payables

Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the association during the reporting period that remain unpaid. Emelia Vickers Receptionist

I am the newest member of the Elba team, I’ve been with

Elba since July 2017. In my role here I am the first point of

contact in the office and I help the team out with any

administration tasks they have.

I’ve got qualifications in Business Management, Business

Administration and Events Management. I’m currently

completing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Edith Cowan University. Stefanie’s understanding

helps make this possible as I often have my head in a book on my break.

I have found that our members have already had a positive impact on my life. I look forward to growing

with Elba, the team and getting to know our members and support workers better. Elba is such a

supportive and an enjoyable place to work, thanks to Stefanie who makes it a great environment. I’d

like to thank all of our members and support workers for being very patient with me while I was learning

my role here at Elba, and continue to do so. You have all been very welcoming.

Chiara Offredi Community Access

Officer

Chiara Offredi- Community Access Officer

“I have been a part of the Elba team for 8 years.

During this time I covered different roles out in the community

and in the office. For the last 6 years I have been responsible

for coordinating the use of our wheelchair friendly vans and

facilitating our Member’s community access.

Community access is very important to promote our Member’s social participation, to increase their

levels of independence and to maintain and develop their social network.

Accessing the community can be challenging at times due to different factors.

31 | P a g e

Page 32: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

I aim to assist our Members in overcoming some of these factors by researching possible suitable

activities, collaborating with 3rd party organisations in the local community and health professionals, and

exploring alternatives.

In order to facilitate our Member’s community access Elba offers the use of two wheelchair accessible

vans.

The vans are available to hire from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm upon reservation.

The use of the van costs $ 15 per trip in the metro areas.

Recently we welcomed Alfred into our team as a secondary driver.

Alfred is helping me in assuring that our Members can benefit as much as possible of the vans.

If any of our Members have someone that can drive the van and would like to go away for a trip or

needs a van for a short period of time, we may be able to assist you with that.

Information regarding costs and conditions to hiring the Elba’s van can be found on our website, or you

can contact me via email or calling the office.

Please also feel free to contact me if you want to engage in new activities in the community but have no

idea where to start.

We can explore together what’s available and suitable in your local area and put together some

strategies to make it happen!

To this point our members have become involved in activities such as:

• Musical groups

• Art groups

• Dancing groups and performances

• Fitness groups

• Craft activities

• Ten Pin Bowling

• Fishing

• Participation to exhibition, sport event, and shows

• Day trips

• Short courses

In addition to my role as driver and community access officer I provide support in the office with

administrative duties.

I am in charge of the applications for grants and of developing our Member’s Person Centred Plans.

With the help of the Independent Living Centre and Lotterywest grants programs we have been able to

purchase items and equipment that make the life of some of our members a little bit easier: these

includes air-conditioning units, vehicle modifications, assistive technology, etc.

Page 33: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

Please get in contact with me if you wish to have more information about grants available.

I take this opportunity to thank our Members for helping me in putting together and reviewing their

Person Centred Plan.

I am aware of how daunting it has been for some of you and I hope that at the end we have been able

to find a way to make it easier for you.

Your input and collaboration has been vital to comply with Elba’s reporting requirements.

Once again I thank Stefanie for her constant help and trust, and a big thank you to the rest of the team

for their support.

Wishing a great year ahead to our Members and Support Workers!

Serina ChanPayroll Officer

I have been in the Payroll/Accounts position for over a year

now and can honestly say that it’s been challenging but at the

same time, I’m enjoying learning new things and getting to

know my way around MYOB.

Since Tom’s departure at Elba, I have also taken on the role of

“Finance Officer”, which means, I’m responsible for each

Members spreadsheets and their usage of funds. Whenever a

Member “is in the red” (using too much funds), Liisa, our Roster Coordinator, and I will sit down and

work out how many hours the Member can use, where they can cut down, etc. Where possible and if

necessary, one or both of us will ring the Member to discuss their use of funds and how can we can

make their funding stretch that much further. After all, Elba is all about empowering our Members and

we only want what’s best for them.

A quick thanks goes out to the team in the office for always supporting me and helping me learn new

things. It’s no wonder I never wake up in the mornings and dread going to work.

Here’s to another year of fun with the Elba family! ☺

Page 34: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

In my role as a Receptionist for 13 months I have come to understand the members and support

workers quite well. This understanding held me in good stead when I took on the role of Roster

coordinator and Human Resources Manager in February this year when Tyson left the position. In this

time I have really enjoyed the position and the challenges that come with it.

The roster aspect of the role is about making sure that every shift in each of our members’ homes are

filled. This includes being on call on weekends and during non-business hours. Most of our members

require regular care from our support workers and when someone is unable to do their shift it is up to

me to ensure that someone else suitable is able to cover the shift. This is a big responsibility as a

missed shift can be extremely detrimental to our members. It means I have to be in constant contact

with our members and support workers liaising with both parties on a regular basis.

The Human Resources component of the role includes the ongoing task of recruiting new support

workers to our organisation while maintaining the talent that we already have working for Elba Inc. This

involves, advertising, screening applications, reference checks and other necessary background

checks, interviewing and finally matching the applicants’ skills and personality to our members. While it

doesn’t always work out in the long run, I endeavour to find the most suitable applicant for the given

member that is available from the resources at hand. The other part of this is trying to ensure our

members are happy with their current support workers and that the support workers have enough hours

work each week so that they don’t have to look for another job elsewhere, potentially compromising

their position with Elba Inc. It can be a juggling act at times and can be challenging trying to keep both

parties happy. Inevitably in this industry, people come and go quite regularly which is unfortunately

something everyone has to accept.

I am really enjoying this role and hope to continue to improve myself and my skills for this position as

time progresses. I promise to continue to do my best to ensure our members and support workers shifts

are always filled and they are happy with our service.

Merrylin TrimbleField Supervisor

What a year we have had already I am missing the word

“Cricket” as Tom is gone onto further his cricket passion with his

own Cricket coaching business and Liisa has taken over his role.

As I did with Tom; I will continue to work closely with Liisa with

the best interest of our Members and Support workers.

Page 35: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

My role with Elba encompasses the following areas with regard to our “Members & Support Workers”

and “Safety in the Home” and I will address these specific areas below.

• Training Support Workers I run Elba’s workshop regularly

• Field monitoring of Support workers working with Members

• Occupational Health & Safety in Members home

• Mentoring Support workers

• Covering Emergency after-hours phone when Liisa is on leave

1. Training:

Elba offers an accredited Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) to our Support workers, this is

held in our Training Room in Elba’s Office on the last Thursday of every month on a rolling schedule;

the group attending now although small in number are very enthusiastic to learn and keen to make a

difference in the disability sector while working with Elba’s members.

The feedback is very positive from both HealthLinks Trainer and Elba’s Support workers, the Support

workers have informed me of the advantages doing it here and enjoy coming to the group sessions for

a shared learning experience as well as doing their own online assignments. It gives them a positive

improvement in their skills and knowledge and values their own achievement and well-earned

Certificate.

Elba’s RTO (Registered Training Organisation) is Healthlink they are a Nationally Recognised Training

provider who delivers Cert111 & Cert1V training to Elba. I am very happy to continue to work with them

for future Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability). HealthLink also run Cert 1V from our Training

Room for those Support workers who wish to further their learning however whereas Cert111 is paid for

by Elba Cert 1V is to be paid by the Support worker as there are only 4 units the difference on

immediate completion of Cert111 often the Support workers chose to continue with Cert1V as well. I do

urge all Support Workers who do not have their Certificate III to gain it at no expense to them, there are

certain considerations that need to be taken into account first before I sign them up for a Traineeship-

Australian Apprentice Support Network.

Elba’s Workshop Training/Induction sessions are run for every new Support Worker often on a Friday

but I do change it to work best for everyone. The training is made as personable as possible if we have

recruited for a particular Member covering all care issues that the Support Workers may encounter in

the community. I explain or demonstrate the correct skills required for various Members needs and

requirements. Trying to expand their skills so they are confident to assist other Members if necessary in

their homes.

35 | P a g e

Page 36: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

I have received excellent feedback from Members that our Support Workers all have the same level of

basic Knowledge and skills that are required. These building blocks ensure the consistency of care with

an understanding of Elba’s standards, Policy & Procedures, and know their responsibilities and who

they are answerable to. This form of training also works extremely well with the Buddy shifts that are

essential to give consistency of care to our Members.

2. Field Monitoring:

Part of my responsibility is to monitor the Support Workers in their roles in the community and for this I

rely on the feedback from our Members; if a Member makes a suggestion or complaint, I carry out the

investigation of that complaint and, if appropriate, instigate further training or disciplinary procedures, or

arrange meetings with the appropriate people to work out the issues. The answer in some cases is that

further training or an extra buddy shift (that I may observe) with the Members number one Support

worker is all that is required.

If need be I will mediate between the Members and the Support Workers being mindful of both of their

rights and respectful to both parties as well as their possible cultural differences. I aim to be fair and

reasonable as I have worked as a Support Worker and do appreciate what they do to keep our

Members living safely and as independently as possible in the community. Team meetings are always

a positive activity to do to keep the home running smoothly.

3. Occupational Health & Safety:

Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) is a serious part of my job to maintain both Member and Support

workers safety, with all “Incident Reports” being followed up. Training includes OH&S matters

pertaining to Community Care. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is given to Support workers at

Induction and Elba’s Members can request more aprons, masks etc. gloves and hand gel can be

purchased from us at very reasonable prices and I will deliver it to Members homes for the Support

Workers to use.

In conclusion, I do enjoy my Role as Elba’s Field Supervisor and gain personal satisfaction from

improving the standard of care delivered. I can’t stress that communication is vital from all parties to

keep our Members homes running smoothly. As Elba’s Field Supervisor I am aiming for Continuous

Improvements for Elba, Elba’s Members and Support Workers. In order to ensure that the quality of

care that is being delivered to our Members is both efficient and professional, I encourage all Members

to please keep in contact with the office and feel free to call me with any concerns regarding your

Personal Care or Elba’s Support Workers who are working with you in your own home. I look forward

to continuing working with everyone.

Ryan James Director of Operations

“Since I first started at Elba back in 2010, I have

experienced many changes, trails and challenges whilst

operating within the disability sector. The 2016/17 financial

year has seen no exception.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is still at a

trial basis as the State and the Federal governments have

not yet agreed on what NDIS model WA will implement. Elba’s

members are spread across all of the different operational platforms, each of these have different

guidelines, acquittal processes and reporting requirements. In order for Elba to provide the best

service possible within these changing environments, we must be flexible, adaptable and innovative

within our operations. I have been directing Elba’s operations for over a year now and have enjoyed the

challenges and learnt a lot. In the not too distant future, the NDIS will be fully operational across

Western Australia. What this looks like and how it will work is yet to be seen. I will however be doing

everything I can to ensure that Elba is well positioned to make the transition as seamless as possible

for its members.

Amidst all of this change and increased competition, there is also huge opportunity for growth. Elba has

identified this and has acted accordingly. We have spent a great deal of time and invested significant

effort rebranding Elba so that we are ready to capture any opportunity that presents itself. Elba’s new

and improved website has been up and running for 18 months, the feedback and response we have

had from it is very satisfying. We have also increased awareness amongst the Local Coordinators

which has resulted in a large increase of referrals.

On a personal note, in the last financial you completed my Bachelor of Business degree, with a

management major at Griffith University. It was extremely challenging to meet all the university

requirements given my workload and responsibilities at Elba, however I have gained skills and

knowledge that is very relevant to Elba and the running of the organisation. I look forward to being able

to implement these skills in the future for the benefit of the organization and its members.

Finally I would like to thank all of the office staff for their efforts over the last financial year, you have all

been very supportive and have been a pleasure to work with. I want to wish Tom Scollay our HR

manager all the best in his new venture, he was a vital part of the Elba team who made a huge

contribution to Elba over the 6 years he worked here. I would also like to thank the members and

support workers who have made a conscious effort to adopt and embrace the changes, I know it has

not been easy but it will hold us in good stead going forward.

I am excited to see what the New Year brings and I look forward to working with all of you again.”

Quality Evaluation FeedbackEvery three years the Disability Service Commission engage an independent Evaluator to assess

service providers to ensure they are compliant with the six Disability Service Standards outlined in the

Disability Services Commission’s Quality Management Framework. Elba was most recently evaluated

in April 2016, resulting in extremely positive feedback. The following are some of the key comments

from the Evaluator:

The office team and Support Workers were impressive in the extent to which they are tuned in

to the voices of their members and families; they demonstrated a high level of responsiveness

and flexibility regarding the needs and preferences of each member.

Elba has recently facilitated a successful outcome through the trialling of a ‘host family

strategy’, in which a member whose wellbeing was at risk in numerous ways has been enabled

to settle down in a new, family-like environment.

The general theme of all feedback was of a quality organisation that is well managed, with

direct service provided by well trained and competent staff. There were no themes expressed

to the contrary.

Support Workers and Elba as a whole were complemented on the quality of induction and

training in all areas, from members’ broad life goals and daily supports, to specific issues

concerning disability, health and medical issues.

Many positive comments reflected positively on Elba’s address of the National Standards,

including:

“Whenever we need help I get in touch, they’re very good”

“[Management names] are very helpful”, “Greatly satisfied…whenever I need any help they’re always

there”

“They keep me up to date with everything, there’s lots of information always being provided”

“They’re cool”, “100% satisfied, very happy”,

“There’s great communication, that’s the most important thing”, and “I don’t know what I would have

done without Elba”.

The Independent Evaluator also stated that he was particularly impressed by:

39 | P a g e

Page 40: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

The office team presented as an energetic, competent and committed group, very focussed on

the wellbeing and satisfaction of their members, and keen to continually improve their services.

A supportive, informal and productive environment was described and observed.

One Support Worker commented “I love my job”, and numerous other comments confirmed

satisfaction with their induction, training and general support.

The array of training opportunities and resources, using both internal and external expertise

and resources, as demonstrated by the Field Supervisor was most impressive.

Elba maintains an excellent, and still developing, online data management system that is

accessible to members and staff.

The experience was a valuable opportunity for insight and guidance of how Elba Inc. is meeting its

responsibilities related to the Six Standards and our commitment to continuous improvement.

Mark Pielage’s Interview with Humans of Perth.

I was twenty-four and on my motorbike going down the nice, winding road of the Mundaring Weir. The

sun caught my eye and I lost control, hit my head and was knocked out for twenty seconds or so.

Luckily, my brother was there, because I usually go by myself, and he came up to me and goes, 'you

alright?'

'I think I'm fucked. Where are my legs?' I said.

'They are still there,' he said.

They felt like they were sticking up in the air. It was a weird feeling.

The ambulance took me to the hospital and did some tests. My brother, who is also a doctor, explained

that the swelling from the trauma gives you paralysis. Once it goes down, you may walk again. After a

month, my condition didn't change. My neck break severed the spinal cord, so the damage was

permanent.

My girlfriend, at the time, helped me through it. I was in hospital for 6 months and she was with me for a

year. It was just so hard with the change in lifestyle that the relationship ended

After my accident, I lived with my parents. I mucked around with computers and model cars. I was

trying to find little things to inspire me. It's hard. It's hard.

I used to have a very active life as a builder. I used to build pergolas, fences and gates; all of the

outdoor stuff. Suddenly, you can't move your arms and you got to have a whole different mindset.

There is no such thing as 'why me?' That's just a cop out. That's life. You have to accept and get on

with it.

At the moment, I am a crossing guard at a local school. At first, I thought it was a pity job. As I started

doing it, I realised it was great. You get to know a little bit about the kids, like what their hobbies are. It's

a nice way to start the day because it motivates me to get out.

In a way, the accident has made me explore who I am by digging deeper into my inner self. It's made

me more empathic. If you have been handed everything in life and living fast and crazy, then you are

just skimming across the top and eating the icing. You never dig deep to appreciate the beauty in life.

When shit happens, you find out what you are made of.

Hi everyone,

I’m writing to you today to let you know that my time at Elba is

coming to an end as I have resigned from my position as the

Roster Coordinator/ Human Resources. After almost 8 years

since I first started with Elba (in October 2009) my final day will

be Friday 28th July.

During this time I have filled various positions within the

organisation and have been in this role since February 2014.

While I’ve not been perfect and have made some mistakes I

have tried my hardest to serve both members and support

workers as best as I can and hope that I have helped you in

some way during this time. Liisa, who has been our receptionist for the

past 13 months is going to take over my position so most of you will already know her as she is the one

who usually answers the phone when you call the office. I have been training her for the last couple of

weeks and am confident that she will do a great job. From next week (Monday 10th July) she will be

your point of contact and will have the after-hours emergency phone should you need to contact it

Page 43: Independent Auditor Report Web view · 2017-10-26Annual Report. 2016/2017. Our Visions. To be a leader in providing specialist support for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities

(remember that it should only be for an emergency relating to a shift). I will still be in the office for 3

weeks while Liisa finds her feet so I can help make the transition as smooth as possible.

As for my future, I’m moving on to run my own cricket coaching and mentoring business (online and in

person). I have been coaching in the evenings most days for some time now and it has got to the point

where it is demanding more and more of my time and I can’t continue to work full time and grow the

business so something had to give. Unfortunately (or some of you might think fortunately) I decided to

forgive my role at Elba as cricket coaching is something that I am extremely passionate about and as

daunting as leaving the security of a full time position in a wonderful organisation is I’m really excited for

what the future holds.

Thank you all for making my job so pleasant over the past 3.5 years, Elba truly is a brilliant place to

work and is full of great people. I’ll stay in touch with the team in the office so hope to hear that

everything is going well for you all.

Thanks again and best wishes for a long and happy future.

Cheers,

Tom

By Gemma Birch (Elba Support worker)

"At the beginning of this year I started my certificate 3 in disability with Elba. After working in disability

support for 5 years I didn't expect to gain as much from the course as I have so far. From the very first

session I was able to apply my new knowledge to my work. The course itself is engaging and based

entirely on my experiences as a support worker, while none of the units require knowledge outside the

scope of my current role, it challenges me to further my knowledge in these areas, I believe this has

made me a better support worker. With the NDIS being rolled out, having a qualification is becoming

increasingly more important. I am grateful to Elba for providing me with the opportunity to access this

course and all the support they have provided me with as I strive for the goal of a certificate 3.”
