Written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by
Congress on July 4, 1776, this document declares
independence from the rule of the King of England.
It is the birth of the New World. On that day, bells
rang and guns were fired. Three Presidents died on
July 4-th, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1826 and James Monroe in 1831.

These parades are usually very simple with children in wagons and grandpas in old cars. Of course, there are school bands marching and horses prancing. Politicians and other community leaders dress up as clowns and join the parade to toss candy to the spectators.

In the afternoon, neighbors and friends gather to
share an outdoor meal. Everyone brings food to
share; potato salads, hamburgers, chocolate cake
and often, homemade ice-cream. Men play
horseshoes, teenagers play basketball, and
children play hide and seek or tag. There are pie-
eating contests to see who can eat the most pie, without using hands of forks, in five minutes.

According to Jane Smith of Truckee, California, "I
love the 4-th of Jule celebrations in my community.
They are held at the local college. In the afternoon,
the community symphony plays patriotic songs and
marches. In the evening, fireworks are set off over
the lake and are coordinated with the music. On this day, we are glad to be living in the USA. "
