CHAPTER 1 GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1. Preparation

• Before execution of the experiment, take care that all material needed is available:

measuring tape, sounding tape, crane, test weights, pendulum, damping box, chalk

and a pocket calculator.

• Make sure an Administration Representative is present.

• The person in charge of the inclining test report should have a copy (if possible)

of the following plans:

• lines plan

• general arrangement plan

• capacity plan (tank arrangement plan)

• draught mark locations

1.2. Initial walk through and survey:

• An initial heel angle of 0.5 degrees is allowed. If the heel angle is more, the ship

should be counterbalanced (record weight and position).

• It is preferred that the ship has minimal trim.

• All mooring lines must be slack, especially when taking the readings.

• Check the depth of the water and the draught of the ship.

• If the clearance is not sufficient (clearance less than 0.5 m), the ship should be

moved to deeper water.

• Free surface effects should be minimized either by: completely emptying all tanks

and making sure all bilges are dry: or by filling up of all tanks (not preferred).

• Survey the ship to identify all items which need to be added to the ship, removed

from the ship, or relocated to bring the ship to the lightship condition. Each item

should be clearly identified by weight, vertical, longitudinal and (if necessary)

transverse location. The total value of missing weights shall not exceed 2 percent

and the surplus weights shall not exceed 4 percent of the lightship displacement.

• Pendulums are in place, weights are on board and in place.

• If a floating crane is used for handling inclining weights, it should not be moored

to the ship.

1.3. Test weights

• The inclining test weight(s) is/are to be determined in advance in order to achieve

an angle of heel between 1 and 4 degrees.

• For determination see item 1.5.

• When several weights are used, they are to be marked by a number or character.

• Dimensions and weight of every inclining weight must be noted.

• Weights, such as porous concrete, that can absorb large quantities of moisture

should not be used.

• Precautions should be taken to ensure that the decks are not overloaded during

weight movements.

• Generally, the test weights should be positioned as far outboard as possible

on the upper deck.

• Provisions should be taken to avoid damage to paintwork, ship construction

and equipment.

• The test weights should be on board prior to the scheduled time of the inclining test.

• The positions of the test weight(s) at starboard and port side are to be marked

on deck, for instance by using chalk, so that these positions can be used again

during all shifts (reducing position measurements).

• The correct position of the centre of gravity of the test weight in relation

to the baseline (or another clearly stated reference), the aft perpendicular

and the centreline is to be determined by measurement and recorded at the starting

position and after each shift. (A situation drawing is necessary!)

• To ensure sufficient test accuracy the total weight of all persons present

and their position (preferable on the centreline) should be recorded and taken

into account.

1.4. Pendulums

• Always use 2 pendulums. With a pendulum length of at least 3 m (if possible).

If a shorter pendulum is used heavier weights should be used to achieve

the deflection of 150 mm.

• The angle of heel is to be measured using pendulums of sufficient length

and damping boxes, filled with water.

• The pendulum wire should be piano wire or other monofilament material.

• The top connection of the pendulum should afford unrestricted rotation of the pivot

point.

• Battens used should be smooth, light-coloured wood, securely fixed

so that an inadvertent contact will not cause them to shift.

• Battens of each pendulum should be clearly marked with pendulum number, length,

date and yard number.

• The damping box should be filled with a liquid to dampen the oscillations

of the pendulum after each weight movement. It should be deep enough to prevent

the pendulum from touching the bottom of the damping box.

• When all the test weights are on one side of the ship, the deflection of the pendulum

should amount to approximately 150 mm.

Heeling angle phi between 1.5° and 2°

Lmax = 0.15 / tan 1° = 8.593 m

Lmin = 0.15 / tan 4° = 2.145 m

CHAPTER 2 CONDITIONS

The following conditions to be fulfilled during the test:

• Ship to be moored only over the centre line, as far as practical, and to float

completely free, therefore use cylindrical fenders at the waterline,

which does not have influence on the heel of the vessel during the test. If the quay

is high it is necessary to insert a pontoon between fenders and quay so that the shell

of the hull does not touch the quay when the vessel heels. Mooring lines and other

shore (cable) connections (if any) are to be fully slack. Bow and stern lines

to be supplemented by 2 spring lines (as long as possible).

• Max. wind speed 10 knots (5.14 m/sec.).

• Trim of the vessel to be minimized as possible with a maximum of 1–1.5%

of the length of the ship.

• Unless specially agreed upon beforehand, only personnel that are required on board

during the experiment will be allowed to stay on board. The names, position

and weight of persons staying on board are to be issued to the person in charge.

• When measurements take place everybody on board has always to be on the same

spot, which will be indicated.

• Cables, equipment or any other substances shall not be put on board or taken

from the ship during the experiment.

• Block weights to be marked and weighed by means of a calibrated instrument. Block

weights are to be placed on board.

• The cranes to be duly stowed, inclusive crane hook.

• Decks should be free of rainwater, snow and ice.

• The ship should have sufficient draught and is to be as up righted as possible.

For information about correction of heel before the test: 1° is about 150 tm

in transverse direction. A weighed correction block can be used for correction

of the initial heel.

• All auxiliary heavy (yard) items of equipment on board, which do not belong

to the ship’s equipment or outfit, are to be removed from board. If removal

is impossible, these items have to be weighed.

Shortly before the start of the inclining experiment:

• The specific mass of the water to be measured at 25% and 75% of the draught

of the vessel by means of calibrated densimeters.

• All shore cable connections to be removed.

• Foreign weights on board, which cannot be removed, are to be observed and location

of these weight items is to be recorded as well.

• Items, which are not yet on board, have to be listed with weights and centres

of gravity (vertical, transversal and longitudinal).

• Required weights for the test are to be placed on board.

• Personnel, that is allowed to stay on board during the experiment, to board

(or to remain on board of) the ship.

• After boarding the gangway(s) is (are) to be removed and put ashore.

• Draught measurements are to be taken forward and aft from the underside of draft

marks and on the Plimsoll mark.

CHAPTER 3 PREVIEW OF SUCCESSIVE ACTIVITIES

3.1. Preparative activities

3.1.1. Record the following general information

• Type of ship with main dimensions, name and yard number

• Date

• Time

• Location of the experiment

• Names and functions of the persons present (yard, class society representative

and owner)

• Situation of ship e.g. starboard alongside quay ropes slack

• Descriptions of weather conditions

• Wind direction related to ship

• Wind force (none/light/moderate)

• Maximum wind force, if steady: Beaufort 3 = 13-19 km/h.

• No varying wind allowed, this will affect the inclining experiment. This will cause

super-imposed variable heeling moments and will negatively affect the results,

making the inclining test not accurate.

• Always check weather forecast and decide if the inclining test has to be re-scheduled.

• Rain (none/light/moderate)

• Waves (none/light/moderate)

• Current (no current allowed)

• Density of the harbour - water

3.1.2. Freeboard readings

• Freeboard readings should at least cover 3 freeboard readings at each side

of the ship. Draught mark readings should be taken to assist in determining

the waterline defined by freeboard readings. The longitudinal position of each

freeboard reading should be clearly marked and documented.

• To check the freeboard readings plot the draught at the longitudinal positions.

Convert the freeboard to a draught. The resulting plot should yield either a straight

line or a waterline that is either hogged or sagged (with a maximum deflection of 2

to 3 cm).

3.1.3. Movable items

The position of all movable parts of the ship such as hydraulic cranes, derricks, anchoring,

piles, adjustable wheelhouses or platforms if any is to be measured and recorded in case

it differs from seagoing position, in order to correct the test results.

3.1.4. Tank soundings

Tank soundings are recorded in order to determine the correct volumes and centres

of gravity using sounding tables.

3.1.5. Final check

The inclining experiment is preferable executed when the ship is completed and all normal

weight items are aboard. Prior to any weight movement the following should be checked:

• The mooring arrangement should be checked to ensure that the ship is floating freely.

• The pendulums should be measured and their lengths recorded.

• Mark the position of the weights on the deck with chalk.

3.2. Actual execution of the experiment

3.2.1. Movements

Before starting, the test weights (at least 4) should be positioned at portside and starboard.

Preferably, two weights at one side should have different weights. Start shifting the first

weight from starboard to portside. Record the deflection of both of the pendulums. Shift

the second weight from starboard to portside and record the deflections. Then shift

the weight, first moved, back to starboard to its first position.

3.2.2. Marking of deflection

Shift the test weight(s) to starboard and record the transverse shift distance, by means

of the situation drawing.

The test weight(s) should not be shifted in longitudinal direction.

Mark the deflection of the pendulum (movement) on the batten and record it (in mm).

3.2.3. Shift distance

Shift the test weight(s) to port side, record the transverse shift distance by means

of the situation drawing and deflection and mark the batten.

Shift distance and deflection are measured in relation to the last position.

3.2.4. Visual check of experiment

Shifts 1 and 5 as well as shift 2-6, 3-7 and 4-8 should show more or less a strong

resemblance.

If so, the experiment can be ended.

If not, check again whether mooring lines are slack and clearance is sufficient. Repeat

the experiment.

3.2.5. Graphical check of the experiment

The results of the inclining test should be plotted to ensure that acceptable data is obtained.

The X-axis of the plot will be the heeling moment (weight x distance) and the Y-axis will be

the tangent of the heel angle (deflection of the pendulum divided by the length

of the pendulum). The plotted values should yield a straight line.
