Following NAIDOC Week, Emerge in Yarra 2018 is a weeklong festival from July 20 - 28, presenting a range of exhibitions, art installations, cooking demonstrations, live music, storytelling, spoken word, dance and conversations.

Founded in 2004, Emerge in Yarra has grown to encompass talented artists from refugee and emerging communities across Yarra promoting diverse art forms, new collaborations and commissioned works.

Friday 20 JulyWithin the OutlineOpening: 6pm - 8.30pm, Budd Street Gallery29 Budd St, Collingwood Exhibition Dates: 20 - 28 JulyA group exhibition that brings together emerging artists and communities including Youssef Maghraby, Mahla Karimiyah, Clive Gono, The Ownership Project, Eunsuk Han (HARU) and Nazi Kakavand. It features calligraphy, scratchboard etching, sculpture and printmaking.

Friday 20th, 7.30pm & Sunday 22nd July, 4pmDeviStudio J, Richmond1/147 Swan St, Richmond DEVI (Goddess) explores the Sufi saying, ‘Death before you die.’ This experimental dance drama piece is curated and directed by Joshinder Chaggar who also features in the show with Jaya Karan and Parvyn Singh.Tickets: $15 Full/$10 ConcessionBookings Call Joshinder: 0470 252 305.

Saturday 21st JulyIn The Can Film Showcase6pm – 8.30pm, Long Play Bar318 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy NorthLong Play Bar will screen short and feature length films by local artists from migrant backgrounds including Saidin Salkic, Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, Christopher James White, Shejuti Hossain and Kate Oleinikov.Following the screenings, filmmakers will unpack their practice, challenges & highlights in a conversation led by Dorcas Utkovic, Producer & Host of OZ AFRICAN TV.FREE event – Booking essential via Eventbrite.

Sunday 22nd JulySouth to South (S2S)Emerge in Yarra Launch event12.30pm – 4.30pm, Atherton Gardens125 Napier St, FitzroyS2S is a free all age’s event, featuring DJs, live music, dance, kids’ activities and soccer matches between community radio hosts, music industry and local artists. It is a cross – cultural collaboration between Australia and Colombia featuring Cumbia Cosmonauts, ChibCha, Mohair Slim and more. In partnership with Vibrating Planet.

The night will feature lyrical spoken word artist, Kyah, supported by the acclaimed contortionist, Soliana, and open mic session.
