Mt Disappointment State Forest :- General Situated 60k north of Melbourne via the Hume Fwy [M31], east of Wandong/Heathcote Junction via Main Mountain Rd. VicRoads 61 D7 Hema 42 H2 Access Conventional Site description Mt Disappointment (794m) was named by Hume & Hovell in 1824 after they were unable to sight Port Phillip Bay. On a clear day fine views of the Melbourne sky line are available. Mt Disappointment State Forest straddles the Great Dividing Range with a steep escarpment to the south and a descending horseshoe plateau to the north, drained by Sunday Creek to the north west. Rainfall also decreases from 1200mm per year at the Mountain to 650mm to the north. Pure stands of Mountain Ash occur in the high-rainfall high-altitude granite derived soil areas. Most of the forest is of mixed species with Mountain Grey Gum, and then Red Stringybark and Narrow-leaved Peppermint predominant as the rainfall decreases. A wide range of understory vegetation common to those species is present. Spring wildflowers are a feature.

Activities Warnings Can be cold, especially near the summit Contact DSE Broadford (03) 5784 1303 CFA District N. East Ref 73

VicRoads 80 C9 Hema 37 E13 Other Rooftop's Yarra-Bunyip 1:100,000 Access Conventional Site description The Park features a variety of vegetation, depending on soil, altitude and moisture.

Swampy heathland is common on the lower flats to the south.

Sandy granite soils on the lower foothills foster a wide range of wild-flowers, including hairpin banksia, furze hakea, boronia and grevillea as well as dense wattle and Tea-tree bush.

The foothill forests of Stringybark (Messmate) and Grey Peppermint extend up to tall, cool mountain forests (Mountain Grey Gum, Mountain Ash) on the higher ridges.

A feature of the understory throughout much of the park is a thick mass of sedge, coral fern and grass clumps. Picnic sites, being near creeks, are well grassed and feature tree ferns, wattles and Tea-tree. Most camping areas, generally being further from creeks, are dryer.
