DEALING WITH DEBT OUT AND ABOUT

In the current economic climate many families and individuals are facing a difficult time financially. In the Calder Valley there are some fantastic organisations helping to combat debt issues by providing practical help and advice. During my time as MP I have been privileged to have met many of these groups and wholeheartedly support their work. Calderdale Credit Union, in Todmorden, is a well-respected local organisation with dedicated staff offering advice on savings and affordable loans. Debt Advice Foundation is a registered charity helpline set up to assist those in difficult financial circumstances, providing understandable solutions. The Citizens Advice Bureau does great work helping anyone with a vast range of problems, including debt. The Sure Start Centres located all around the Calder Valley give excellent family support, and recently hosted an educational programme in conjunction with Barclays Bank designed to raise awareness on avoiding debt and managing finances for young people and parents. As your MP, I will continue to take the opportunities available in Parliament to represent Calder Valley constituents on the many issues relevant to them, including financial hardship. Conservative campaigners have joined local residents in expressing disappointment that the Liberal Democrat led Council has chosen to dispose of Stainland Mechanics Institute. The building is obviously in a very poor state of repair, but concerns have been raised that by disposing of it at auction it will come under pressure to be demolished before all possible ways of converting it have been explored. Sam Stafford will be working with Councillor Keith Watson to ensure that demolition is the very last resort given the historic importance of the building to the village and will be requesting that the proceeds from any sale are spent within Stainland.

The Coalition Government is committed to empowering communities and to handing over responsibility for local services and facilities to accountable community groups. A great example is the transfer of Hebden Bridge Town Hall to the Hebden Bridge Community Association and the interest being shown in the future of the Picture House. Here in Greetland & Stainland a group of volunteers has been formed to work with the Council to restore Shaw Park in Holywell Green. There will also soon be new powers for communities to get involved in planning by adopting Neighbourhood Plans. Conservative campaigner Sam Stafford would like to see more community groups formed in Greetland & Stainland and would be delighted to hear from you to see if the Conservatives can help with setting one up.
