The Learning Disability Team; Changing Times

As many of you will know there have been lots of changes atSuffolk Carers over the last few months and the LearningDisability project has been no exception. We sadly had to say

goodbye to many Family Carers first point of contact, Pat Nice, who we know many Family Carers had an enormous supportfrom, in filling in Emergency Plans and generally being pointed inthe right direction with services we offer at Suffolk Family Carersand more widely in the community.

Bill and Emma have swapped roles with Bill now taking on therole of advocate. Primarily this is funded for families of people

with a learning disability who are part of the local authoritiesAMOS project (Accelerated Moving On Strategy). This is wherepeople who live in residential care homes in or out of the countyare being supported to move into their own homes and in somecases, purchase a share of those homes through a specialmortgage; or where residential care homes are de-registering tobecome supported living schemes and people are then entitledto a tenancy agreement and more welfare benefits. As you can

imagine this can be quite a daunting time for those families. Insome circumstances we are also able to support families ofpeople who need to move on, to find suitable accommodation forthem and receive an appropriate service from ACS.

Emma is now the involvement worker and has the task ofsupporting the Family Carer representatives to the SuffolkLearning Disability Partnership Board (SLDPB) to ensure families

views are considered when planning the future development ofservices. This is always a challenging task but Bill and the repshave worked hard to try and ensure they are meaningfullyinvolved in meetings. This continues to present hurdlesespecially when the SLDPBs format and meeting structure isonce again under review and may change, although we areunsure what those changes will be yet. We hope that we caninvolve more families and provide some added bonuses for

families who do give us their time and thoughts on services andtheir future development. Watch this space for more
