ARTICLE Is foldables the future?

All thanks to technology, the foldable technology is opening new doors of how we interact with our gadgets, how we work, and how we multi-task. The advertisement shown by Samsung in CES 2013 where a small phone can become a tablet in no time giving the user the extra space to work on, has become a reality today; as more and more technology companies are working in bringing out gadgets which possess this technology. Aside from camera improvements, there aren’t many hardware upgrades that justify the price increase of smartphones. Accordingly, companies are desperate for any new feature that could give them an edge over the competition. Any innovation that truly distinguishes them from a competitor could be the feature that gets customers to switch. In the eyes of manufacturers, foldability is that new feature.Samsung launched its first foldable smartphone “Samsung Galaxy Fold” in 2019 which is just a proof of concept that foldables are the future. The device even though faced many screen issues in the introduction stage, Samsung then recalled every unit from the customer and replaced it with a redesigned product. Then came many companies like Microsoft, Huawei etc., launching foldables. The technology is very expensive as of today, so were the smartphones five years ago. As the time passes, smartphone can be a standalone device which can also act as tablet, computer, TV and even a projector. The form factor of the very smartphones has been changing since inception. The customer needs are dynamic, they started to like the smartphones having a huge display. When we have a whole new form factor, there is so much to talk about or think about. Now the new form factor in the future of tablets or smartphones will be packing a large screen in a small space. The new form factor comes at a disadvantage of visibility of crease when folded open. This has been fixed by Motorola Razor which has been launched in 2019 as a mid-range smartphone. Just imagine you are carrying a gadget in your pocket which can open like a tablet and even a full-size computer. Wouldn’t that be cool? We are going to see some folding in the future, folding in, and folding out.
