Can you keep a secret? How about dozens of them? Welcome to the first-ever Secret Issue of D/CITY, where we’ll uncover and share some of the mysteries and riddles of life in Washington D.C. And pssst: Be sure to read this issue carefully, as we’ve hidden some dolorpit amet pretty awesome secrets inside.
Getting in top shape requires hard work, but thankfully, the instructors at the new 305 Fitness studio (1630 14th Street NW; 646.480.2459) know that work and play go hand-in-hand. At Washington’s first location for the wildly popular fitness movement, you’ll perform high-intensity, dance-inspired routines while a local DJ spins nightclub-worthy tunes.
If you’re avoiding carbs, you’ll want to detour around 7th Street NW – the newly opened Uprising Muffin Company (1817 7th Street NW; 202.290.1196) will test your willpower when it comes to baked goods. The menu includes flavors like cranberry-orange and blueberry streusel, with a few rotating special additions each day. All things considered, why bother
resisting?

SOLVE YOURINCREDIBLE STYLE MYSTERY
There’s no denying it: Personal style is intriguing, intoxicating, and endlessly debatable. For proof, look to the thousands of blogs, websites, and Instagram accounts dedicated to it. Part of the reason we’re all so obsessed with personal style? The fact that it’s so deeply, truly personal. Here, some of Washington’s best-dressed denizens let us in on what makes their individual style sing.

BOOK’EMHow you choose to while away your private hours is your own prerogative — but for our part, we love nothing more than to settle in
with a good book. Here, a handful of Washington bookworms offer up their picks for brilliant end-of-summer reads.

FAVORITESECRETSPOT IN
D.C.? ...
Corner of 16th & Corcoran [Street NW] has a huge house that’s always nicely decorated; their Halloween display is great! TCB is the best coffee bar off the beaten path.

Meridian International Center and the Textile Museum have lovely
English manor-style gardens. It feels like something out of Brideshead
Revisited or like the children’s book The Secret Garden. Little slice of Old World Euro charm amid the
hustle and bustle of D.C.@LOULOULIU83 VIA INSTAGRAM
Columbia Heights, there’s an alley off the 1000 block of Irving Street NW, where you see a
JC Auto & Frame Repair Shop (I don’t think it’s in business anymore) that has a number of the coolest
murals in the city, including Chuck Brown and MCA of The Beastie Boys.

Meridian Hill Park is a gem many people
don’t know about unless they live nearby. It’s a beautiful place to relax or be active with an interesting history! My dad even said his
parents brought him to play there when he was
a child, so it’s cool to be able to go there now
myself so many years later.

HIDDEN TREASURESGlitz and glamour have their place – and there’s no shortage of posh hangouts in this ’hood. But what about those comforting haunts that feel more hole-in-the-wall than haute-cuisine?
Here, your go-to guide for dive bars and down-to-earth eateries.
4 D/CITY
8
• SOLLY’S U ST •TAVERN
1942 11th Street NW(202) 232-6590
One of Solly’s biggest draws is the weekly
Kostume Karaoke event on Thursdays, so bring your
own costume (or borrow a getup from the venue) and belt it out on stage in front of strangers. If singing isn’t
your thing, there’s also a charity trivia competition on Wednesdays and live
music on Fridays.
2
• VELVET LOUNGE •
915 U Street NW (202) 462-3213
A D.C. institution for live music, good drinks, and a no-
frills atmosphere. Plan your visit around the weekly and monthly DJ nights, or shell out $8 to see
the main act (and usually two or three openers).
5
• FLORIDA AVE • GRILL
1100 Florida Avenue NW(202) 265-1586
The neighborhood’s ultimate greasy-spoon has been serving up comforting soul food (and hangover-curing breakfasts) since 1944. Whether you opt for a plate of buttery biscuits
or something more hearty, like a half-smoke and collard greens,
you can’t go wrong.
1
• PICA TACO •
1406 Florida Avenue NW(202) 518-6820
At this under-the-radar Mexican spot, you can choose
from a substantial menu of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, tortas, and more. Oh, and there’s breakfast, too, in case you’re hankering for
huevos rancheros.
4
• FAST GOURMET •
1400 W Street NW(202) 448-9217
A neighborhood institution for satisfying late-night
cravings, Fast Gourmet is fast approaching cult status when it comes to cheap eats (and
unusual locations). Get there before 3 a.m. and try any of the sandwiches, especially
the legendary chivito.
3
• 1905 BISTRO & BAR •
1905 9th Street NW; (202) 332-1905
Think you’ve found the best rooftop bar in the city? If you haven’t been to the top of 1905, think again. Inside this tucked-away
rowhouse is one of the neighborhood’s coolest, most low-key bars, and the quiet, secluded roof deck is hard to beat.
6
• DC9 •
1940 9th Street NW(202) 483-5000
With a quirky-cool mix of local and national acts,
DC9 has been fueling late-night dance sessions since 2004. Have a drink on the roof or descend to
the snug basement bar for a more up-close-and- personal experience.
7
• GREAT WALL • SZECHUAN HOUSE
1527 14th Street NW(202) 797-8888
A must-visit for fans of authentic Chinese cuisine,
Great Wall has been cultivating a devoted foodie
following for years.

– Alejandra Owens
LES LIAISONSDANGEREUSESby Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
“On my commute, I’m reading Les Liaisons Dangereuses to escape the time and space of public transportation.”
– Katerina Herodotou
JUST KIDSby Patti Smith
“I’m planning on reading Just Kids this summer. I’ve heard it’s beautifully written, and who wouldn't want to live vicariously through a punk-rock icon in gritty 1960s / 1970s New York?” – Teresa Tobat
DARK STAR SAFARIby Paul Theroux
“Summer is about escaping. With- out moving an inch, I get to travel hundreds of miles through Africa by train, bush taxi, and an armed convoy.” – Katalina Mayorga

ART UNDERGROUNDWashington’s independent art scene is booming, so now’s the perfect time to scoop up
pieces from the city’s most promising creatives — before they hit the big time.
PERFECT LIFE 101Shhh: No one needs to know that you don’t actually have it all together, all the time.
Meet the free mobile apps that can help you fake it ’til you make it.
KELLY TOWLES
Armed with little more than a sense of humor and some spray paint, Towles has been
brightening up the District with his signature creepy-cute characters for years. You can
view his work at occasional exhibitions (and on various walls) around town, and shop for
prints and T-shirts at kellytowles.com.
ELIZABETH GRAEBER
A prolific illustrator with a distinctive hand-drawn style, Graeber has contributed to The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and
The Boston Globe, as well as An Illustrated Guide to Cocktails, published in 2013. You can shop her collection of paintings, ’zines, illustrated books, and assorted other works online at
elizabethgraeber.com.
AVI GUPTA
By day, Gupta is the Director of Photography at U.S. News & World Report. After hours,
he’s one of the city’s most promising fine art photographers, exhibiting both locally and in
the UK. His compositions are familiar yet haunting, capturing the details both mundane
and extraordinary about the immigrant experience. See more at
avigupta.com.
TEUX DEUXFinally, a to-do list that helps
you get stuff done and looks a lot better than your chicken-
scratch, pen-and-paper version. This high-design app requires a TeuxDeux membership ($2/
month), but it’s worth it: The app helps you accomplish daily tasks,
rolls over unfinished projects to the following day, and syncs
between your mobile device and computer. After all, if your to-do list has to be a mile long, it might
as well look really cool.

VSCO CAMThis photo app lets you turn even
the most boring breakfast into a Kinfolk-worthy scene. Choose from a staggering variety of filter collections (many – but not all –
of which are free) or go renegade and fine-tune every last detail
yourself. Oh, and there’s a built-in social community, too, so you could presumably make a few
digital friends while you’re at it.
CHEFS FEEDWhen it’s time to choose the
spot for your next group dinner, you want to be the hip one in the bunch that knows where to go – and why. Chefs Feed
lets you do just that by cluing you in to where the city’s best chefs go to eat, and what they
order. Top-notch chefs like Mike Isabella and Bryan Voltaggio have contributed their picks
for restaurants and dishes, so when you hit Reply All to the
“Where should we eat?” email, you’ll be armed with serious
insider info.
HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW
D.C.?This city is teeming with secrets, from quirky architecture and under-the-radar
hotspots to deep, dark mysteries. How many of these little-known factoids have you uncovered?
• CHEAP SEATS •
File under: Who knew? TicketPlace.org sells discounted tickets to theatre and performing arts events
at area venues such as the Kennedy Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and Artisphere. The discounts are
nothing to sniff at, either – how does 50% off admission sound?
• SECRET SUPPERS •
The secret supper club industry is booming in the District, with no fewer than seven hush-hush clubs
to choose from currently. A few to try: Chez Le Commis (email [email protected] ); Hush Supper Club
( hushsupperclub.com ); and Seasonal Pantry (seasonalpantry.com/supper-club ).
• VIVA RELAXATION •
Looking for a hidden oasis? Find your way to the Art Museum of the Americas, a tucked-away Spanish
Colonial building near the National Mall, where a beautiful tropical garden and pool await you. There’s also a
permanent collection of Latin and Caribbean art as well as temporary exhibitions.
• DEAD PRESIDENTS •
Only one former U.S. president is buried at the National Cathedral (Woodrow Wilson) and
only one died inside the U.S. Capitol Building (John Quincy Adams).
• HELLO, PILGRIM •
The best view of the D.C. skyline might just be from the Pilgrim Observation Gallery at the National Cathedral,
where you can take in unobstructed, 360-degree views from 150 feet in the air. Try to spot the hidden Darth
Vader head carved into the northwest tower while you’re there.
• MONKEY MORNINGS •
Believe it or not, the grounds of the National Zoo typically open around 6 a.m. – well before the rest of
the city’s museums. So, if you’re an early bird, you could quite possibly have the place to yourself for a few hours. (Well, you’d have a few hundred animals
keeping you company…)
• LOCK-IN •
Want to book a staycation that none of your friends will believe? Turns out, you can spend the night in a
lockhouse on the C&O Canal. The six spots available for overnight stays are all brick or stone homes and are
more than 170 years old. Reserve your old-school experience at canaltrust.org.
• TASTE OF JAPAN •
Between U Street and Adams Morgan, Hana Japanese Market is a tucked-away gem for fans of Japanese cuisine (and travel). On
Thursdays, the market gets deliveries of fresh, organic Japanese vegetables. The small travel
agency in the back can assist with that upcoming trip to Tokyo, too.
