Fear the Trusted Insider• John 18:1-2

– 1When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples. 2Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples.

• Judas knew the most likely place to find Jesus

Praying in the Garden• Matthew 26:36-38

– 36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me."

For Discussion• Jesus apparently needed time alone with

the father– Why take Peter, James and John with him?

• What was Jesus deeply grieved about?– How and why “to the point of death”?

• What were the apostles to “keep watch” for?

Jesus’ Prayer Continues• Matthew 26:39-41

– 39And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.“

• Didn’t Jesus know that it wasn’t possible for this to happen any other way?– Why pray for something else?

• The important thing is that He is ready to do the will of the Father

A Ministering Angel• Luke 22:43-44

– 43Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.

• Even in the deepest agony, God has not forgotten Jesus

• Dr. Luke is very descriptive– Hematidrosis

Sleeping Disciples• Matthew 26:40-41

– 40And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

• Peter always seems to get the bad press– How could they sleep at a time like this?

• Why would Jesus chastise them?

Page 9: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

Ongoing Petition• Matthew 26:42-44

– 42He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done." 43Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.

• Why does Jesus continue to ask the same thing?

The Betrayer is at Hand!• Matthew 26:45-46

– 45Then He came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!"

• Jesus has to wake the disciples for the final hour

The Romans Arrive• John 18:3

– 3Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

• A cohort was the smallest independently operating unit of theRoman army– As large as 500 men

Page 12: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info 12

For Discussion• Why involve the Romans at this point?

– Temple guards had failed to arrest Jesus earlier

• Why send a unit this large for Jesus?– Think of what is currently happening in

Jerusalem• Thousands of pilgrims in Jerusalem for Passover

• The Romans would have been more than happy to assist in apprehending a troublemaker

Whom Do You Seek?• John 18:4-6

– 4So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" 5They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6So when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.

Page 14: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info 14

For Discussion• Why would a cohort of Roman soldiers fall

back from an itinerant Galilean preacher?• This is an “I AM” declaration

– Jesus spoke with the authority of deity• There had to something awesome in

Jesus’ appearance• He may have given Himself into the hands

of sinners and be on is way to the cross, but He was still GOD

I Said ...• John 18:7-11

– 7Therefore He again asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene." 8Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way," 9to fulfill the word which He spoke, "Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."

Page 16: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info 16

For Discussion• Jesus wants the arresting body to plainly

state that they are here only for Him and that the others are free to go

• We often read that such and such happened that Scripture would be fulfilled

• John clearly holds Jesus’ words in equal stature to Scripture– “So that Jesus’ words would be fulfilled ...”

Impetuous Peter• John 18:10-11

– 10Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus. 11So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?“

• Was Peter left-handed?– Or just bad with swords?– Or both?

Page 18: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

Legions of Angels• Matthew 26:52-54

– 52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?"

• Twelve Roman legions consisted of 72,000 men

Page 19: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info 19

The Power of Darkness• Luke 22:52-53

– 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? 53While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours."

Page 20: In The Footsteps Of The Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ

www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info 20

For Discussion• The Chief Priests could have arrested

Jesus at any time– Why did they not?– For fear of the people

• So they come under cover of darkness to avoid the intervention of Jesus’ followers

Jesus Arrested• John 18:12a

– 12So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him ...

• The wheels are now in motion– Jesus is bound for the cross– He will fulfill His mission– Death and Hades will not stand in His way– He will rescue His children
