F| In this instance, necessity was the mother of invention. After the lye-Bank, sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Western New York, came into existence in J 946, the major activity was getting pledges for eyes to be ttied in cornea transplantation. Albrecht and his fellow work- ers figured that it would tie shout 15 yean before any of their pledged eyes would be available. However, one of the would-be donors died suddenly. The pledged eyes were to be shipped to New York to be used by a sur- geon as corneal transplants. Albrecht knew that the eyes must be kept at about 34 degrees Fahrenheit, and protected against excess moisture or drying out Hastily he discussed his problem with Barney Miller, a Willlams- ville hardware merchant. Miller donated a gallon Insu- lated jug to the caiise. Albrecht filled this with ice cubes and put the sealed bottle of eyes in it. The Buffalo Eye-Bank's first in- vestment in vision was speeded to New York by airplane. The eyes reached, New York In B i of i 8 m-4 K hel usabIe condition, but complaints were made about the packaging. It was pointed out that the bottle was difficult to remove from the jug, and that water from the melting ice cubes could have seeped Into the bottle. Years ago while in school, Al- brecht had taken mechanical drawing. He attacked the ship- ping problem with pad and pen- cil. First he designed a tube to hold the bottle of eyes. This could be thrust into the Insulated jug. However, It was 1 difficult to poke the tube down Into the ice cubes. Albrecht got a manu- facturer to join two bottomless gallon insulated jugs. He then inserted the tube in the top and filled the joined jugs with ice cubes from the bottom. Finally, the flat-bottomed jug with a base opening was developed. Albrecht designed a special clip in the tube so the bottle can e easily removed. He made another delicately balanced clip to hold the eye JR the bottle. This holds the eye firmly, with the cornea up so that it cannot William and ilfeinlc/pW'-ki; brother iftr ni<\ Mrs Edward losepti Szsrowskl, Kreddy J.. Raymond Arthur, V. S. Army, nd Henry J. HOPE FOR SIGHTLESS—This invention of a lawyer, Joseph A. Albrecht, carries the hope of sight for the blind over thousands of miles* In the bottom of the hottle is cotton saturated with a saline solution. The clip holds the eye so the solution can flow around the edges of the bottle without touching the cornea. The cornea is thus kept from becoming too moist, but at the same time can- not dry out. Albrecht's containe. hat car- ried eyes from Buffalo donor* to blind people as far away aa San Francisco. It keeps the cornea fresh for transplanta- tion for a period up to M hours, "Some of the eyes donated to our Eye-Bank are used locally, some are shipped out," said Al- brecht. "The operations must be performed while the eyes are fresh. We send out available eyes wherever a surgeon in- forms us he has a patient wait- ing for the surgery. _ "Some local blind people have the surgery done here, Others go out of town for It. We ship eyes wherever they art needed and other communities send them in here. "The corneal transplants are the most dramatic phase of our work at the Eye-Bank, but com- prise only a small part of our program. Equipment for research, diagnosis and treatment to save sight is all important." The Eye-Bank & Research So- ciety, located in the University of Buffalo Medical School, is headed by Dr. Angelos Dalla- porta, an outstanding Austrian ophthalmologist. He is assisted by two laboratory technicians. Before establishment of the laboratory, eye specialists often had to wait weeks or months for reports and slides from Washing- ton, New York or Philadelphia. Eyes or parts of eyes are avail- able for research. Eyes from slaughtered animals ire obtained for doctors who wish to experi- ment before special operations. £o"oTo"8Tg g o"g BUTBTH 0 8 0flSBCOoBoBOOoBC8 IB TTToTffTrgTro' T1TSTipfW9irVrn"STlfV¥¥S"Mlft 5lT8TlTirg"tTT8Ta BBS OTmnTB 8'8'oT'oTiro^TOTiWI^^ NEW SHIPMENTS ADDED DAILY J LO BUE FUNERAL HOME Anthony F. toBue, Lie. In this instance, necessity was the mother of invention. After the lye-Bank, sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Western New York, came into existence in J 946, the major activity was getting pledges for eyes to be ttied in cornea transplantation.

Albrecht and his fellow workers figured that it would tie shout 15 yean before any of their pledged eyes would be available. However, one of the would-be d o n o r s died suddenly. The pledged eyes were to be shipped to New York to be used by a surgeon as corneal transplants.

Albrecht knew that the eyes must be kept at about 34 degrees Fahrenheit, and protected against excess moisture or drying out Hastily he discussed his problem with Barney Miller, a Willlams-ville hardware merchant.

Miller donated a gallon Insulated jug to the caiise. Albrecht filled this with ice cubes and put the sealed bottle of eyes in it. The Buffalo Eye-Bank's first investment in vision was speeded to New York by airplane.

The eyes reached, New York In Bi ofi 8 m-4 K hel u s a b I e condition, but complaints

were made about the packaging. It was pointed out that the bottle was difficult to remove from the jug, and that water from the melting ice cubes could have seeped Into the bottle.

Years ago while in school, Albrecht had taken mechanical drawing. He attacked the shipping problem with pad and pencil. First he designed a tube to hold the bottle of eyes. This could be thrust into the Insulated jug.

However, It was1 difficult to poke the tube down Into the ice cubes. Albrecht got a manufacturer to join two bottomless gallon insulated jugs. He then inserted the tube in the top and filled the joined jugs with ice cubes from the bottom. Finally, the flat-bottomed jug with a base opening was developed.

Albrecht designed a special clip in the tube so the bottle can

e easily removed. He made another delicately balanced clip to hold the eye JR the bottle. This holds the eye firmly, with the cornea up so that it cannot

HOPE FOR SIGHTLESS—This invention of a lawyer, Joseph A. Albrecht, carries the hope of sight for the blind over thousands of miles*

In the bottom of the hottle is cotton saturated with a saline solution. The clip holds the eye so the solution can flow around the edges of the bottle without touching the cornea. The cornea is thus kept from becoming too moist, but at the same time cannot dry out.

Albrecht's containe. hat carried eyes from Buffalo donor* to blind people as far away aa San Francisco. It keeps the cornea fresh for transplantation for a period up to M hours, "Some of the eyes donated to

our Eye-Bank are used locally, some are shipped out," said Albrecht. "The operations must be performed while the eyes are fresh. We send out available eyes wherever a surgeon informs us he has a patient waiting for the surgery. _

"Some local blind people have the surgery done here, Others

go out of town for It. We ship eyes wherever they art needed and other communities send them in here.

"The corneal transplants are the most dramatic phase of our work at the Eye-Bank, but comprise only a small part of our program. Equipment for research, diagnosis and treatment to save sight is all important."

The Eye-Bank & Research Society, located in the University of Buffalo Medical School, is headed by Dr. Angelos Dalla-porta, an outstanding Austrian ophthalmologist. He is assisted by two laboratory technicians.

Before establishment of the laboratory, eye specialists often had to wait weeks or months for reports and slides from Washington, New York or Philadelphia.

Eyes or parts of eyes are available for research. Eyes from slaughtered animals i re obtained for doctors who wish to experiment before special operations.
