CHALLENGES IN NEONATAL NUTRITION

GROWING PAINS

Page 2: in neonatal care GROWING PAINS · 2018-02-20 · Integrate current evidence in developing nutritional CQI projects that enhance the care of VLBW infants. Identify metabolic risk factors

You are invited to a unique educational program addressing management concerns related to fetuses and infants at risk for acute and chronic feeding and growth issues. This conference is designed to enhance clinical awareness of prenatal and postnatal factors having the potential to impact gastrointestinal, metabolic and/or endocrine function and ultimately long-term outcomes for neonates. An expert panel will explore new techniques, best evidence for application of older clinical modalities and identify promising therapeutic options for the future. As an attendee, you will also be able to appreciate the complex ethical, quality and safety issues inherent in prescribing nutritional support for vulnerable newborn infants.

Conference ObjectivesAt the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:

■ Discuss the evolution of current nutritional management strategies.■ Identify factors related to genetic programming that can impact the growth and development of the fetus.■ Assess need for treatment of neonatal hypoglycemia and discuss new modalities for addressing this issue in newborns.■ Analyze nutritional risk and long-term outcomes in infants of diabetic mothers.■ Explore pros and cons related to the use of Prolacta and Donor Human Milk and Medolac in VLBW infants.■ Discuss and compare diagnostic evaluation tools for infants with dysphagia with the goal of developing a feeding program. ■ Integrate current evidence in developing nutritional CQI projects that enhance the care of VLBW infants. ■ Identify metabolic risk factors in sick newborns that may influence nutritional management in the NICU. ■ Review the interpretation of newborn metabolic screening test results in tiny infants who are receiving parenteral nutrition.■ Discuss the benefits and potential risks of the “Baby Friendly Hospital” initiative. ■ Review the etiology of necrotizing enterocolitis and the evolving science behind the treatment.■ Review the evidence related to the use of probiotics in neonates.■ Discuss evidence behind the use of the alternative intralipids - omegaven and SMOF.■ Identify factors predisposing preterm infants to fatty acid imbalance.■ Discuss long-term consequences of intrauterine and postnatal growth failure. ■ Examine the accuracy of our current growth charts and discuss possible changes.
