Slightly more than a year ago, the world aca-rological and parasitological community suffered from the loss of Andrei (André) Vladimirovich Bochkov (27 August 1968—9 May 2018)—an eminent acarologist, one of the greatest experts on systematics of parasitic acariform mites—as he died on the 50th year of his life, in the prime of his scientific career. Andrei’s death is an irretrievable loss for the national and world science. His col-leagues and friends dedicate this special issue of Acarina to the memory of this outstanding scientist and extraordinary man.

The entire 32-year scientific career of Andrei Bochkov was associated with the Zoological Insti-tute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Saint Petersburg). At this institute, he undertook his long and challenging academic path from Lab Assistant to Head Researcher, becoming one of the greatest experts in acarology.

From Laboratory Assistant to PhD (1986–1999). Andrei Bochkov was born on 28 August 1968 in Novosibirsk (Russia). In the mid-1970s, his family moved to a suburb of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Since his early years, Andrei expressed great interest in biology, which was in-spired by his school teacher E.V. Kudryashov. In 1986, after graduating from high school in a small town of Taitsy (Gatchina District, Leningrad Re-gion, Russia), he came to the Zoological Institute with a naive desire “to study tigers”. However, at that time, the Institute could only offer young An-drei a more prosaic position of a lab assistant at the Department of Parasitology. Nevertheless, he was delighted by the opportunity to work at the Institute with parasites of vertebrates. Although the labora-tory assistant duties in the animal facility were not particularly exciting, later in his mature years, Andrei spoke with considerable pride of the fact that he had passed all of the steps of the scientific hierarchy, starting from the very bottom.

From the first days of his work at the Depart-ment, Andrei was not willing to limit himself with simple tasks, like technical work in the mite col-

lection and looking after animals in the vivarium. His interest in acarology prompted Andrei to ask his supervisor, Dr. H.V. Dubinina, an expert on mammal-associated acariforms and house dust mites, for an opportunity to work on a research project in this field. This request resulted in his first scientific works dealing with the systematics of myobiid mites (Myobiidae) parasitizing on murid rodents.

Parallel with his work at the Institute, he was a part-time graduate student at the Department of Entomology of the Biological Faculty in St. Peters-burg State University, from which he graduated in 1996. Later, Andrei declared that the Department is where “the real systematists are formed”. By the time of his graduation from the university, his sci-entific interest was clearly focused on the system-atics of a particular category of acariform mites—permanent parasites of mammals. He remained faithful to this group of arthropods until the end of his life. Upon graduation, while still working as a lab assistant, he independently and enthusiasti-cally began conducting research on his favorite group of mites—myobiids (Myobiidae).

Gradually, his research began to expand to other groups of parasitic mites associated with small mammals, both Astigmata and Prostigmata. In particular, under the supervision of H.V. Du-

binina, Andrei began studying fur mites Chirodis-cidae, Listrophoridae and Myocoptidae, mange psoric mites Psoroptidae, house dust mites Pyro-glyphidae (Astigmata) and predatory mites Chey-letidae (Prostigmata). The development of Andrei’s

scientific mindset was significantly broadened by contacts and collaborations with senior researchers in the Department of Parasitology. Under the influ-ence of Dr. S.V. Mironov—a prominent expert on feather mites, who subsequently became his PhD

advisor—scientific interests of Andrei have ex-panded to several groups of mites parasitic on birds; namely, the families Syringophilidae and Harpi-rhynchidae (Prostigmata). Based on his long-term study of myobiids, in 1999, Dr. Bochkov success-fully defended his Candidate of Sciences thesis (Russian equivalent of PhD) “Mites of the family Myobiidae (Acari: Prostigmata) and their position in the system”. His thesis work resulted in a pub-lication titled “New classification of myobiid mites (Acari, Acariformes)” (Bochkov, 1997c), which is considered a significant contribution to this sub-field of acarology.

Foreign postdoc research (2000–2006). Post-doc fellowships at foreign museums and universi-ties played a huge role in Andrei’s subsequent development as a world-class scientist. They al-lowed him to work under the mentorship of world leading acarologists and to gain access to rich materials deposited in some of the largest world collections. It is necessary to give Andrei credit for his determination and perseverance: his self-admit-ted less-than-mediocre knowledge of English did not deter him from undertaking his first postdoc.

In 2000, Andrei participated in a study under the supervision of Professor Alex Fain (the Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique, Brussels, Belgium)—the greatest taxonomist-acarologist of the 20th century. The project was titled “Phylogeny and systematics of the family Cheyletidae (Acari: Cheyletoidea),—Grant from the Belgian Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs”. For the first time, Andrei had access to the richest collec-tions of parasitic mites stored in Brussels and Tervuren (at the Musee royale de l’Afrique central, Belgium). As a result of this and other subsequent collaborative works with Professor Fain, 49 joint publications were produced, among which was the reconstruction of the phylogenetic system of predatory and parasitic mites of the family Chey-letidae (Bochkov and Fain 2001).

From 2003 to 2006, Dr. Bochkov held a three-year postdoc position at the Museum of Zoology of the University Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, in the lab of Professor Barry M. OConnor—the great-est expert on systematics of astigmatan mites. There, Andrei participated in the project titled “Phylogeny and Historical Ecology of Mite Para-sites of Vertebrates (Acari: Dermanyssoidea and Sarcoptoidea) (PEET grant from NSF)”, in the course of which he excellently mastered the use of cladistics methods in systematics. Being an open

and communicative person, Andrei has established scientific contact with many researchers world-wide. His interests have expanded to include such mites as bee-associated cheyletids (Cheletophyes), skin-dwelling feather mites of the families Derma-tionidae and Epidermoptidae (Astigmata) and even gamasid mites (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae). The period of postdoc studies was crucial for Andrei’s development, when in less than a decade he became a world expert in the systematics and phylogeny of parasitic acariform mites. Among his most im-portant generalization works are those on the clas-sification and phylogeny of mites of the superfam-ily Cheyletoidea (Bochkov 2002); on the phylog-eny and host associations of the fur mite subgenus Listrophoroides (Atopomelidae) (Bochkov and OConnor 2005b); and, in collaboration with S.V. Mironov and A. Fain, on the phylogeny and evolu-tion of parasitism in feather mites of the families Epidermoptidae and Dermationidae (Analgoidea) (Mironov et al. 2005).

Scientific peaks (2007–2012). After the post-doc period of his life—being full of energy, enthu-siasm and creative plans—Andrei decisively fo-cused on generalization studies and the preparation of his Doctor of Sciences thesis (equivalent of a Habilitation Degree in many European countries). During six subsequent years, he published 64 works on astigmatan and prostigmatan mites associated with mammals, including three monographs: on the phylogeny and systematics of the endoparasitic astigmatids of the families Gastronyssidae, Lemur-nyssidae and Pneumocoptidae (Bochkov et al. 2008); a review of mites of the parvorder Eleuther-engona, permanent parasites of mammals (Bochkov 2009a); and a monograph on host-parasite relation-ships between the mite subgenus Microtimyobia (Myobiidae) and cricetid rodents (Bochkov 2011a). Among the most important works of this period are generalization papers on the origin and evolution of parasitism in mites of the infraorder Eleutheren-gona (Bochkov 2008c, 2009a); works on the phy-logeny and evolution of parasitism in mammal-associated psoroptidian mites (Astigmata) (Boch-kov 2011b; Bochkov and Mironov 2011); and works on the use of phylogeny and coevolutionary rela-tionships of parasites in the study of the evolution of hosts, e.g., the use of mange mites (Psoroptidae) to study strepsirrine primates (Bochkov et al. 2011). Additionally, in collaboration with S.V. Mironov, Dr. Bochkov has studied the phenomenon of syn-hospitality in parasitic acariform mites (Bochkov

and Mironov 2008). The two authors have also generated an original macrophylogenetic system of the order Acariformes (Mironov and Bochkov 2009). In general, this period of Andrei’s career has proven to be most fruitful. Finally, in 2011, Andrei successfully defended his Doctor of Sciences thesis titled “Acariform mites, permanent parasites of mammals: phylogeny, systematic and host-parasite interactions”.

Acknowledged acarologist (2013–2018). Be-ing at the top of the acarology profession, Dr. Bochkov did not decrease the intensity of his re-search, continuing his studies in various fields until his last days. He continued working on the phylogeny and the taxonomic revisions of a practi-cally important family of mange mites, Psoroptidae, which he started back in 2009. A series of taxo-nomic works, devoted to the mites of the family Harpirhynchidae parasitizing on birds in the New World, were finalized in a taxonomic monograph (Bochkov et al. 2015).

During this period, Andrei successfully col-laborated with colleagues from the A. Mickiewicz University (Poznan, Poland) and, in particular, with a prominent expert on quill mites, Dr. M. Skoracki. Two major investigatory projects, notably, have been carried out: “Host-parasite relationships and biodiversity of prostigmatan mites (Acari: Acari-formes), permanent parasites of passeriform birds (Aves: Passeriformes) of Holarctic region” (2011–2013) and “Acariform mites (Acari: Acariformes) permanently parasitizing warm-blooded vertebrates in Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar: fauna genesis, phylogeny, and host-parasite relation-ships” (2013–2017). As a result, 18 works on mites of the families Syringophilidae, Myobiidae and Cheyletidae have been published. Andrei’s gen-eral investigations during this period include the works on: the species delimitation and morpho-logical diagnostics of Chorioptis mange mites (Bochkov et al. 2014); the cophylogeny of harpy-rhynchid mites and birds (Bochkov et al. 2017); and the phylogeny of house dust mites of the subfamily Guatemalichinae (Klimov et al. 2015a). Two works dating to this period present a special interest. One is his controversial review on the reversion of parasitism “Is parasitism of Metazoa a one-way ticket?” (Bochkov and Mironov 2013). The other is his latest generalizing work “Host-parasite interactions of acariform mites (Acari-formes)—permanent parasites of mammals” (Bochkov 2016).

Scientific heritage. The scientific heritage of Andrei Bochkov is rich and diverse, in terms of both mite taxa and the general scope of research topics. He is the author of 220 scientific works, including 5 large monographs (see the List of pub-lications; monographs are marked with *). In the course of his taxonomic studies, Dr. Bochkov has established 496 new mite taxa, including 7 family-group names, 43 genus-group names and 445 new mite species (see the List of taxa and Table 1). It is important to emphasize that in the overwhelming majority of his scientific publications, Andrei was the leading author, who performed essentially the entire work. But, being a polite person, Andrei often acknowledged the participation of senior and respectful co-workers by placing them ahead of him in the author list.

In the last decade, about two dozen of his articles were devoted to the reconstruction of the phylogeny of various family groups of parasitic acariform mites, including Cheyletoidea and Psoroptidia, as well as to major questions in parasitology and general biol-ogy. Unfortunately, some monographic works, such as the revision of the scabies mites of the family Psoroptidae and of the hair mites of the family Atopomelidae, were never finished.

Because of his efforts, a sizeable representa-tive world-class collection of astigmatan and prostigmatan mites parasitizing on mammals has accumulated in the Department of Parasitology of the Zoological Institute RAS. The collection contains 26 mite families, over 10,000 slides and about 900 species, including many type speci-mens. Since the early 1990s, Andrei has partici-pated in many expeditions to Central Asia, Ka-zakhstan and Kamchatka, becoming an extreme-ly active collector of valuable research material. His last expedition in 2016 was to Ethiopia, where unique material for morphological and molecular studies was collected.

Simultaneously with his intensive research, Andrei took the time to conduct other work for the benefit of science. He actively worked on editorial boards of a number of national and in-ternational scientific journals, such as Acarina, Proceedings of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, International Jour-nal of Acarology, Zootaxa and Zookeys. Largely due to his efforts as the deputy editor, the Russian journal Acarina has become one of the leading research journals in the field of acarology in the world.

Being an extremely sociable person, Andrei has established contacts with many zoologists engaged in the collection of host-animals of his mites not only in Russia, but also in other countries. Despite his challenging character, straightforwardness and at times quickness of judgment, Andrei was an extremely benevolent and responsive person both in professional and personal life. A man of sharp intellect, Andrei was fiery and at times harsh in his scientific argumentation. However, he could hon-estly and openly admit his errors. He was ex-tremely communicative and easily made contacts with people of all ages, positions and social circles. Known for his cheerfulness, optimism and (at times rough) sense of humor, Andrei could liven up any company, be it in or outside of the workplace.

It is safe to say that Andrei was one of the most “famous” employees of the Zoological Institute. In addition to his exceptional sociability and unique personal charm, Andrei possessed solid authority on many scientific topics that went beyond the mite systematics. In early 2000s, he became one of the most active specialists who contributed to the de-velopment of cladistic methods in systematics. Andrei even organized a short course of lectures on his approach at the Zoological Institute.

Andrei left us in the prime of his scientific career, maintaining youthful enthusiasm and admi-rable work ethic until his very last days, despite the severe illness. We will keep the memory of Andrei in our hearts—an extraordinary bright person, a special friend and an outstanding scientist.
