Foods help fight common cold To The Press T his time of year, it seems every- body is walking around with one. From runny noses to sore throats to coughing to body aches, adults have an average of two to three colds per year, according to the Centers for Disease Con- trol and Prevention. Although washing your hands regularly, getting enough sleep and keeping your dis- tance from others who are sick are effective ways to avoid the common cold, there are also some foods that can help in dealing with sickness. Here are some foods to eat — and avoid — when you have a cold, according to WebMD.com: • Chicken soup: Numerous studies have shown that chicken soup clears nasal pas- sages and congestion better than other hot liquids. • Citrus: Although vitamin C won’t keep you from catching a cold, it can help you feel better when you first notice the symp- toms of a cold. Plenty of vitamin C from fruits such as oranges, lemons or limes at the onset of sickness can help you get rid of a cold faster. • Germ fighters: Kale, broccoli, cran- berries, green tea, red onions and blueber- ries all have an antioxidant called quercetin, which possesses antihistamine and anti-in- flammatory properties. • Chili peppers: The capsaicin in chili peppers can clear out your nasal passages and studies have shown they also help with a “stuffy” head. • Ginger: A cup of hot ginger tea helps clear congestion and soothes a sore throat. Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Although you need lots of liquids when fighting a cold, caffeine and alcohol dry you out. — More Content Now Slow Cooker Tomato Soup Serves: 8 Ingredients: 2 (28-ounce) cans San Marzano toma- toes 2 cups milk 1 sweet onion, minced 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Grilled cheese sandwiches, for serving Directions: Place the tomatoes, milk, onion, olive oil, garlic and red pepper flakes in the bowl of a slow cooker.
