Welcome Back! We were delighted to welcome our new Year 7, 12 and 13 students to IGS on Friday 4th September and on Monday morning we welcomed back all years to school - all of you hopefully fully refreshed and ready to go for the new academic year! Over the holidays we have celebrated fantastic exam success once again at both A Level and GCSE.

We set new records for A Level again this year, achieving our highest ever points scores per student and points per exam entry. With a 99% pass rate, 39% A*/A and 90% A*/C grades, there was real cause for celebration. There were outstanding performances from a whole range of students, including Calum Carslaw and Rhiannon Savage, each with 4 A*s, Tom Bennett and Samuel Hill with 3A*s and Alex Burnett, Matthew Leedham and Jess Parker each with 2A*s and an A.

We have also seen our highest ever number of students progressing onto university study this year, with a record number moving on to Cambridge University to study courses including Medicine, Music and Natural Science. This is a fabulous set of results of which we can be rightly proud!

At GCSE, although top grades have dropped nationally for the fourth year in a row, we once again bucked this trend, by increasing the percentage of A* and A grades achieved by our students this year, including in English and Maths, where 14% of all GCSE entries were awarded A*s, (7% above the national) and over a third (36%) achieved either an A* or A (15% above national). In total, 16 subjects improved their A* and A grade results this year, with 13 subjects improving at A*-C, showing further successes across all disciplines at the school. This was of course the last year using these headline measures, as from this year, the new Progress and Attainment 8 scores will be used.

It is therefore particularly pleasing to see that IGS has performed exceptionally well on ‘expected’ and ‘better than expected’ progress measures this year too, (where students’ prior ability is taken into account when comparing results to national outcomes), with 98% of our subject results outperforming national expectations for both measures, several by more than 20%.

Top performer at the school was Catherine Boyle with 10A*s and 1 A grade, followed by Rebecca Hall with 10A*s and Ella Glover, Millie Horn and Skye Lury with 9A*s and 1 A grade.

As we start the new term we have introduced the 6 period day, with changes to lunch time and a slightly later finish (3.05pm), alongside the 2.15pm finish on a Wednesday (full details here). School bus times have been amended accordingly and full details can be found here. We have a number of exciting things to look forward to and work on this year, including our new school Vision and Values, have you seen the new display in the school’s main entrance?

Our vision at Ilkley Grammar School is to provide an exceptional, inclusive

learning experience at the heart of our community. Our students will achieve

their academic personal best and will be equipped with the confidence and

skills to make a positive difference to their own lives and the lives of others.

We will achieve this through modelling our core values and attributes in the

way we work together.

You should also be familiar with your Year qualities…

Our new Year 7 students will get a chance to put all their key skills to use next week as they head off to Nell Bank...good luck everyone, enjoy your day, make

lots of new friends, test yourself and remember...do your Personal Best!

Alongside our visions and values and tie qualities are also our basic, school rules that form the foundations of our Personal Best (PB) reward and sanction system. Can we take this opportunity to remind you of the behavior we expect from you:

Students are expected to: Be polite Show respect for others Allow others to learn without distraction Try hard and do their personal best Respect property and the academy environment Wear their uniform correctly Attend school and be punctual

Students around school should: Keep to the left in corridors Move directly to their next lesson in an orderly way and behave

sensibly Eat and drink in designated areas only Fill their water bottles only at break time and lunchtime Retrieve their belongings from lockers only before registration,

break time and lunchtimes in readiness for lessons Use Mobile Phones at break time and lunchtime only Stay away from out of bounds areas Only use their iPad in lessons unless it’s a wet break/lunch

In lessons, students should: Arrive on time and attend all lessons Bring the correct equipment including a charged iPad Line up outside the classroom Sit where they are told to do so by the teacher Follow instructions given by staff Speak politely at all times Work hard and always do their Personal Best As you know our academic year ends in a terrific celebration of student achievement with Challenge and Celebration Week—one of the highlights on the school calendar and a brilliant chance to congratulate you on your effort in following the PB system all year. Unfortunately there are times when we have to use the PB sanctions, starting at comments and moving on , if necessary, to detentions and isolations. We expect you to follow the basic rules with regard to school life and where possible avoid the sanction, whether it’s wearing a skirt at the correct length, arriving to lessons on time or correct use of your mobile phones...teachers don’t enjoy handing out comments and would much rather praise and encourage with stamps as rewards. In the small number of cases where detentions are used as sanctions your parents will be informed in advance of why you have received a detention and when it will take place. In extreme cases isolation will be used and to reflect the changes to the school day we will be extending isolation until 4pm.

We received a special well done from MP Kris Hopkins. He had read about our fantastic Maths achievements last year and wanted to extend his own congratulations...well done to all those involved!

Well done to Jemima Elgood (12RN) who has been selected to represent England in the Mountain Running Home Counties International in Betws-y-Coed, Wales on 19th September. This is Jemima’s second England vest having made her England mountain running debut earlier this year at the International Youth Cup in Bulgaria. Earlier this year Jemima finished runner up in the 2015 FRA U16 championships...best of luck Jemima! Left: Jemima Elgood (12RN)

Congratulations to Dominic Coy (9SP) who raced at Mallory Park racing track in Leicestershire for the Inter Regional Junior Triathlon Championships on Sunday 6th September after being selected as one of the 12 triathletes to represent Yorkshire for the second time. Competing as part of the Tri Star 3 boys team which also included Rueben Mantle (Bingley) and Fionn Kerry (Holmfirth), Dom swam, cycled and ran well eventually finishing a respectable 21st in his age group within a very competitive field just behind Fionn and Reuben. The Yorkshire Team for the second year running just missed out on the podium by 8 points to be placed 4th Team overall. One more chance next year hopefully for Dom!

Well done to Ben Smithson (10JDA) who as part of the Yorkshire U15s basketball team came away from the Lord Taverners National Junior Championships with a bronze medal.

Congratulations to Jamie Kidd (9PB) who competed in the City of Liverpool Open Championships in July. The tournament was attended by 300 competitors from the UK and Europe, at the Green Bank Sports Centre in Liverpool. Jamie picked up his third gold medal of the year in the 53kg Cadet Advanced category

Congratulations to Herbie Wilman (11AHF) who as part of his work experience at Multiflight Flying School (Leeds International Airport during the last Challenge and Celebration week undertook his first flying lesson.

Herbie wants to become a pilot and now has 40 mins flying time in his pilot’s log book as a result of the fantastic opportunity at Multiflight. This was a hugely inspirational placement which Herbie sourced himself.

Well done to Ella Grench-Cini (8AMB) who achieved a distinction in her LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) public speaking exam just before the summer holidays.

Bravo to our latest music students who have enjoyed success in their recent music exams:

Emily Berry (10JPC) and Eleanor Dear (9PB) have both had successful auditions to the Saturday Music School at Leeds College of Music.

Lewis Wheelhouse (10JB) and Ellie Cooper (10JDA) both passed their Grade 4 Classical exam, Lewis achieved a distinction and Ellie was awarded with a merit.

Abbey Lane (8ASH) and Ella Shuttleworth (8AMB) took their Grade 2 Flute exam and achieved merits. Emily Mayo (8MEH) took her Grade 4 Flute exam and secured a pass. George Emsley-Sharp (8MH) sat his Grade 3 Trumpet exam and also achieved a pass.

Herbie Wilman (11AHF)

Congratulations to Ziah Stanley (11CT) and Raiden Venaruzzo (11JLF) who enjoyed work experience at the University of Bradford and were such a hit, they made it into the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics news letter!

Stay Safe The roads around Ilkley and particularly around school can be busy around drop off and pick up times. Please remember the following when crossing the road: wait at the kerb by the crossing so that drivers know you want to cross at a signal crossing, press the button and wait for the green man to light up and never walk out while the

red man is showing, even if the cars have stopped or other people are crossing always walk over the actual black and white stripes of a crossing - many accidents happen around

crossings never cross the road while using your mobile phone or while listening to music on head phones stay alert at all times, remember cyclists and motorcyclists use the roads as well as drivers

Music Clubs We are looking forward to seeing lots of new faces (and all the old ones too) at our exciting programme of extra-curricular clubs. There is no cost for the clubs - they are free! If you need an early lunch pass to get into B Hall then please see the teacher who runs your club. You may eat packed lunches in the music room before rehearsal starts. We have a packed term this autumn with the school production, Open Day and the Christmas Concert and we'd love for as many of you to be involved.
