In Conwy Where Snowdonia Meets the Sea
WINTER GUIDE 2019/2020
#GetWrappedUp
Discover unmissable adventure, magical scenery and unique experiences.
The toughest thing to do in Llandudno and Conwy County is to fit everything in to a winter staycation! There’s so much on offer - whether it’s a family break, adventure getaway or a relaxing retreat you’re after, this part of North Wales has it all.
Get wrapped up in adventure, food and drink, history and home-from-home cosiness all in one trip. Explore the Great Orme Country Park, the mountains of Snowdonia or take a bracing walk on Wales’ longest pier. From the stunning Conwy Valley to Hiraethog, discovering magical villages, unmissable experiences and events has never been so exciting.
Autumn and winter in Conwy see the county undergo a beautiful transformation. Our woodlands are an explosion of russet, yellow and gold making for some spectacular sights. Enjoy a magical winter break in a cosy cottage, a sumptuous seafront hotel or a country inn with a roaring log fire and a warming hot chocolate as you take in the stunning views around you.
In January, wrap up and see the crashing waves on a beach walk along the Wales Coast Path. Get out and about exploring the winter scenery or even try your hand at a new activity.
Late January or February is perfect for a romantic getaway. Plan a St Dwynwen (patron saint of Welsh lovers), or a Valentine’s mini-break with your special someone. Enjoy leisurely walks, adrenaline adventures and epic scenery that will provide magical memories to last forever.
Adventure Parc Snowdonia, Dolgarrog01492 353123 Map ref: D3Already home to a world-first inland surf lagoon, Adventure Parc Snowdonia now has a new weather-proof adventure facility. Adrenaline Indoors features one of the UK’s longest artificial caving systems, indoor and outdoor climbing & racer walls, leaps of faith, stunt jumps, possibly the most extreme slides you’ll ever encounter, and the UK’s only kicker flight slide. Adventurers can even take a tandem zip line from the rooftop to fly over the surf lagoon. There’s also a soft play area for toddlers.
Llandudno Snowsports Centre 01492 874707 Map ref: A3Go downhill fast at Llandudno Snowsports Centre. When better to work on your winter sports skills than during the colder months? If you prefer to take things sitting down, ride the 2,500ft/750m Cresta Run, the longest toboggan run in Wales.

GYG Karting, Cerrigydrudion01490 420770 Map ref: I7Feed your need for speed at GYG Karting. It’s the largest karting circuit in the UK, providing high-octane thrills for racers of all ages.
Zip World Fforest, Betws−y−Coed01248 601444 Map ref: G4Take to the trees with friends and family at Zip World Fforest to tackle ropes, nets and swings strung through the canopy. There’s also the Fforest Coaster toboggan run and the Plummet 2, a pulse-pounding 100ft/30m drop through a trapdoor that’s the closest thing to freefall this side of an aeroplane.
Go Below, Near Betws−y−Coed01690 710108 Map ref: G4Go Below Underground Adventure is the ultimate dramatic subterranean experience. In former mines deep beneath Snowdonia you’ll discover a world of deep blue lakes, zip wires, bridges, ladders and abseils. It’s an assault course like no other.
Boathouse Climbing Centre, Llandudno01492 353535 Map ref: A3Llandudno’s Old Lifeboat Station is the new home of the Boathouse Climbing Centre that will appeal to all-comers, beginners and experts alike. It features around 200 square metres of climbing surface with a bouldering wall 4.5 meters high. The climbing tower is 8 meters high with a series of lead climbs and top rope, with many routes that are challenging the most experienced climbers.
Wales Coast PathThere’s never a bad time to dip into our section of the legendary Wales Coast Path. It stretches almost 35 miles between Kinmel Bay and Llanfairfechan, so you’ll have plenty of waterfront walking to choose from.
and so the
adventure begins
Cycling Amid the airy, moody landscapes of Mynydd Hiraethog you’ll find family-friendly routes around the Alwen and Llyn Brenig reservoirs. For road cyclists there are lung-busting climbs and gentle family trails like the Conwy Cycle Route, an almost entirely traffic-free 30-mile coastal cruise.
Mountain Biking Hardcore riders will make for unmissable experiences like the wild woodland tracks around Penmachno and Betws-y-Coed, including the mighty 16-mile Gwydir Mawr Trail.
Plas y Brenin, Capel Curig01690 720214 Map ref: F2Now’s the time to see the white stuff on Snowdonia’s peaks. Get to grips with these mountains under expert tuition on outdoor courses run by Plas y Brenin National Mountain Sports Centre. They cover everything from climbing to canoeing, mountain biking to hiking.
If you’re planning your own outdoor adventures, take a look at adventuresmart.uk Its advice on weather, gear and skills helps you stay safe.
Don't forget! Opening times and facilities may change without notice so please contact the individual attractions before setting off. VISITCONWY.ORG.UK 54 VISITCONWY.ORG.UK
LLANDUDNO PIER 01492 876258 Map ref: A3What’s not to like about piers? At Llandudno, we have the longest in Wales. So wrap up and blow the cobwebs away with a walk to the end and back. And if you’re still in the mood for walking, continue along our rather lovely prom (which we think looks even more magical all lit up after dark).
CONWY CASTLE 01492 592358 Map ref: B3If anything, Conwy Castle looks even more dramatic when silhouetted against a dark, brooding winter sky. Walk the ramparts to sense its power, undiminished 800 years after it was constructed as part of King Edward I’s campaign against Wales. For some of the best castle and estuary views, take a walk along Conwy’s medieval walls. Stretching nearly unbroken around the town’s heart, they’re some of the longest and best-preserved in Europe. No wonder both they and the castle have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

DOLWYDDELAN CASTLE 01690 750366 Map ref: H2It may be smaller than Conwy, but Dolwyddelan Castle is still a rock star. Built by Llywelyn the Great (13th-century Prince of Gwynedd and de facto ruler of most of Wales), its setting on a rocky ridge amid the peaks of Snowdonia has drama to spare.
ABERCONWY HOUSE 01492 592246 Map ref: B3This 14th-century merchant’s house, a rare survivor through centuries of turbulent history, stands as a living time capsule. Inside, the rooms are furnished to illustrate different periods in Aberconwy’s long life, giving a peek into our Jacobean, Georgian and Victorian past. The house is open daily from March to 3 Nov from 10am to 5pm. Open weekends only 9 Nov to 22Dec from 11am to 4pm.
CONWY CULTURE CENTRE01492 576139 Map ref: B3Scheduled to open in winter 2019/20, the new Conwy Culture Centre brings Conwy’s heritage to 21st-century life. Housed in a striking modern building just outside the town walls, it will be home to a library and the Conwy Archive, plus an arts and heritage hub featuring interactive exhibits and displays from the county’s historic collections.
Winter Light On 16 Nov and 14 Dec the castle will be illuminated in white as part of the Winter Light event in Llandudno. See page 13.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo, Colwyn Bay 01492 532938 Map ref: B5Doesn’t just contain a Noah’s Ark of creatures - everything from sea lions to snow leopards. It’s also playing its part in the fight to save endangered species from around the world.
Conwy RSPB Nature Reserve, Conwy Estuary01492 584091 Map ref: B4Conwy’s RSPB Reserve, a wetland site on the edge of the estuary, is a tranquil oasis of calm just a stone’s throw from the A55. In winter, look out for flocks of birds gathering to feed, or forming large roosts at dusk to keep warm.
Conwy Valley Railway Museum, Betws−y−Coed01690 710568 Map ref: G4Rail enthusiasts love Conwy Valley Railway Museum, located right next to the main station. Climb aboard a miniature steam train for an eight-minute trip through landscaped grounds, visit a museum full of fascinating railway artefacts and browse the huge collection of model trains in the shop.
Llandudno Chocolate Experience 01492 339507 Map ref: A3 Those with a sweet tooth are in for a treat at Llandudno’s very own Chocolate Experience. The Llandudno attraction is divided into nine different areas each one uncovering a different part of the history of chocolate. The Memory Lane section also features hundreds of chocolate wrappers, tins and boxes from the last century. See website for opening times: llandudnochocolateexperience.co.uk

BODNANT GARDEN, EGLWYSBACH01492 650460 Map ref: D4Bodnant’s Winter Garden, created in the last 10 years, is the seasonal jewel in its crown.
