The first nine weeks was fast and furious. So many wonderful things have happened in just a short amount of time. In addition to a smooth start to the school year, Boushall was the recipient of Altria’s generosity. Forty Altria volunteers came and beau- tified our school. We are also the Renaissance School of Business and Technol- ogy. Along those lines, our students will learn how to operate a school store and learn the many facets of supply and demand and balancing a budget. These are just a few of the spec- tacular things happening at Boushall. I welcome all parents to join the PTA and volunteer in the school. It takes a strong partnership between home and school to elevate student achieve- ment. The next nine weeks is also filled with a number of ac- tivities that will showcase our student’s talents. Students at Boushall are Respectful,

and our teachers are Caring, Committed and

I Station

Icre cream parties are held every

month for all our

I Station students in Tier 1. I station is a computer reading intervention pro-gram designed to

assist each student in improving read-ing comprehension.

The ice cream is provided by our Truancy Depart-

ment. Each student has the ability to

move to Tier 1 read-ing level by focus-

ing on the inverven-tion lessons and

completing ninety minutes of com-

puter instruction.

Greetings from the Boushall Science

department, our young student scien-

tists, and our teachers Ms. Minott, Ms.

Anderson, Ms. Manson, Mr. Asante,

Ms. Flippen, Mrs. Baylor-Holmes and

Mrs. Logan-Reilly. You should have re-

ceived a course syllabus for your

child’s Science class that outlines the

curriculum and class expectations.

Sixth grade covers a wide range of gen-

eral science topics. Seventh grade

science focuses on living things and

the environment. Eight grade sci-

ence is physical science, primarily cov-

ering matter and energy concepts.

Ninth grade advanced Science is earth

science. Every class regularly engages

in “hands-on” laboratory experiences.

The department goal for this school

year is that 100% of Boushall students

complete an independent, inquiry

based project for display in the school

Science Fair. The Science Fair will take

place at the end of February. You are

welcome to visit our Science labs and

see our young Scientists in action. We

thank you for your support.

6th and 7th grade 'Math Student Teach-

ers' teach mini math lessons to their

classes. Each student chose a different

topic from our first nine weeks SOL and

presented an interactive, student created

lesson. Peer teaching help students in-

teract and develop their math skills.

We, as a Mathematics department, strive

to involve all the students in the learning

process.

Go find your student. Ask them to

tell you what these words mean:

problem, hypothesis, procedure,

data, conclusion, control, constant,

independent variable, and depend-

ent variable. They should be able to

tell you!

The 25 Book Campaign is in full swing.

The students are asked to read each

night and track their progress on the

reading log provided by their reading

teacher. There will be nine week goals to

meet as well as prizes for students who

are meeting the goals. parents are en-

couraged to read with their children to

enforce the importance of reading.

History Department

On October 20th, eight student repre-

sentatives from the eighth grade at-

tended the Prejudice Awareness Summit

at VCU. Students learned how to identify

prejudice and how to address it in con-

structive ways. Students also learned

about the ramifications of prejudice in

our society and how to educate their

peers in creating a more accepting school

community. Patricia Moreno, Gloria Casti-

llo, Rakeem Green, Alex Cephas, Eliza-

beth Gamino, Jermaine Gordon, Ciarra

Richards, and Fayshawnna Peay look for-

ward to bringing their new found anti-

prejudice knowledge back to Boushall.

Is your child not working to po-

tential due to behavioral, emo-

tional, and/or academic issues?

They can’t seem to focus, re-

fuse to participate, complete

class work /homework, initiate

verbal or physical conflict with

peers and staff, and require

continuous redirection. Are they

also displaying negative behav-

iors in the home and commu-

nity? Could they benefit from

having a professionally trained

and caring counselor assisting

them throughout their school

day to decrease negative behav-

iors and work towards accom-

plishing personalized goals? If

so, Y.C.A.P.P. and Life Coach

Community Service are excited

to be partnered with students,

parents, and TC Boushall Mid-

dle School to provide therapeu-

tic services to students that

provide support in the school

and home setting. For more

information call 780-5016 and

speak with Ms Routier our CIS

coordinator.

In the month of October, I Have

a Dream Foundation volunteers

distributed over 18,000 books

to Richmond and Henrico

Schools. Boushall received over

1,600 books including popular

titles such as “The Red Queen’s

Daughter, The Young Bond Se-

ries, Camp rock series, and the

Jonas series. Students received

at least two books for their per-

sonal libraries

Page 4: IMPORTANT NUMBERS Rising Eaglesweb.richmond.k12.va.us/Portals/17/assets/pdfs/Boushall... · 2012. 3. 6. · Dairy of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules by Jeff Kinney The Chronicles of Narnia

Regular attendance is vital for stu-dent achievement and is the re-sponsibility of the student and parents / guardians.

Excused absences are those that resulted from: *Illness or medical appointment absence with a doctor’s note *death in the family *religious observances *required court or any other gov-ernment ordered appearances. When returning to school, the child must bring note to the atten-dance office with the reason of the absence. Failure to do so will produce unexcused absences that will lead to school and possible legal intervention.
