NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MRS JANE MARTYN

GOOD NEWS STORY Last year, our school was fortunate to be one of the first schools to have our wireless network upgraded. As a result of this, a team of technology specialists visited our school to do some fantastic work with robotics, Google and STEAM. You can read about it and see the pictures in this article that was sent to all schools recently: https://schoolsequella.det.nsw.edu.au/file/0ab611a5-77d7-4865-9186-bab8f7fedf00/1/FutureStories.zip/FutureStories.html

NEWSLETTER Each week, our newsletter is emailed to the addresses that we have been given. Should you wish to change your preferred email address, please contact our office. Our newsletter is also uploaded to our school’s website at: http://www.urunga-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ If you would prefer a paper copy, please call into our office to pick one up.

END OF SCHOOL ROUTINES Please be mindful of the fact that lessons are still in progress until the end of school bell at 3.20. If you arrive at school to pick up your children before the bell, please don’t hang around the classrooms as this may impact on lessons and learning. We ask that you wait either in the top COLA or on the bottom COLA until the bell. Jane Martyn

WEEKLY SCHOOL RULE

The focus this week is the orange rule “complete all work”. We ask that you reinforce this week’s rule at home with your child.

Harmony Day this year will be celebrated at UPS on Wednesday the 14th of March.

This year we will again be teaming up with our Urunga CWA ladies and learning about Poland.

GET READY FOR THE BIG VEGIE CRUNCH! Did you know that 5.4% of Australian children eat enough vegetables? In order to work towards improving this percentage, we need to increase children’s knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes towards vegetables. On Thursday 1st March at 10am our school will be joining hundreds of schools across NSW to break the record for the most students crunching vegetables simultaneously. But we need your help to make it a success! On Thursday 1st March, please pack your child a container of vegetables (not fruit) for them to crunch on. Need some ideas?

carrot, celery, cucumber – cut into sticks or left wholecapsicum – cut into sticks or wedgescorn – raw baby corn spears or a cooked corn cobbroccoli or cauliflower florets - raw or lightly cooked to keep their crunchtomatoes – small cherry tomatoes or a large tomato that can be eaten like an applebeans or snow peas - raw or lightly cooked to keep their crunchmushrooms – sliced or left whole

If you require more information on The Big Vegie Crunch, please contact the school or your child’s teacher. Mrs Arnold - Vegetable Week School Coordinator

DISTRICT SWIMMING Last Friday, 22 of our swimmers competed at the District Swimming Carnival held at Macksville Pool. It was a great day and everyone swam their hardest and achieved some wonderful results. Congratulations to the 11 swimmers pictured who qualified to swim at the Mid North Coast Carnival at Coffs Harbour.

MID NORTH COAST SWIMMING As mentioned above, 11 of our swimmers travelled to Coffs yesterday to compete at the MNC swimming carnival. Lulu McGrath, Harriet Pagulayan-McCabe and Riley Meenahan will progress to the North Coast carnival to be held at Murwillumbah next Wednesday in some individual events. Lulu and Harriet will be joined by Eliza and Clare to compete in the senior girls relay. Great swimming everyone!! Read next week’s newsletter for a more detailed report!

COMMUNITY TUTORS This week we started our 2018 Community Tutoring sessions. Each week this wonderful group of volunteers come to the school and share their time and knowledge with our students. Each tutor works with students to help with reading, spelling or maths. In doing so not only do the children improve in their studies but they also develop a special friendship with their tutors.

Many thanks to all our tutors!!

SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS Invoices for school contributions with full details of what the school contribution covers, were sent home last week. Thank you to all the families who have already paid. The individual class teachers will send home notes advising of any other supplies that may be required for their class. Classroom supplies and text books will be handed out in class. It would be appreciated if families could pay these amounts as soon as possible. If you wish, you may pay these contributions in instalments throughout the year.
