WASTE SERVICES EXCURSION “On Friday, year 5 and 6 students went on an excursion to the Coffs Coast Waste Services. As we got there it was smelly and everybody blocked their noses. Lia, our educator taught us a few things about our bins and what to put in them. We learnt about recycling and she showed us what they do when they collect all of our rubbish. We had a good time learning about rubbish (except it was a bit stinky!).” Ashlee Little and Kodi Brettle

MID NORTH COAST HOCKEY TRIALS Last Friday Oliver, Lewis, Imogen and Lucy headed up to Grafton for the mid north coast hockey trials. They all played a few games with other hockey players from around the mid north coast region in a bid to gain selection in the team to play at the North Coast trials next term. They all played well and we congratulate Imogen and Oliver who made it through to the next level and will travel again to Grafton at the end of the first week of term 2. There they will play in the mid north coast team again teams from the lower north coast, northern rivers and far north coast regions. We wish them all the best! ANZAC DAY This year ANZAC day falls in the second week of the school holidays. Our school will still be taking part in the ANZAC Day ceremony in Urunga on Thursday 25th April. The school leaders will read readings and the School Choir will present an item as part of this ceremony. All Urunga Public School students are encouraged to participate in the march. It would be very much appreciated if you could bring your child, in full school uniform including a school hat, to assemble under the trees opposite the Ocean View Hotel in Morgo Street at 10.45 am. They will then form part of the march to the Cenotaph. Parents can collect their children when the ceremony has finished. Kaye Arnold and Lana Ashworth P&C NEWS - MOTHER’S DAY STALL In previous years the P&C has asked parents to donate a gift to be repurchased at the Mother’s Day stall. This year the P&C will donate the presents, hopefully taking some pressure off families to find, donate and then purchase a gift. We are working hard to have a variety of gifts ranging from $2 - $5 that the students can purchase. If you still wish to donate gifts, that would be greatly appreciated. They can be left at the front office. The Mother’s Day stall will be held on Thursday 9th May (Week 2, Term 2). HOT DOGS - CROSS COUNTRY Hot dog orders for the school cross country should all be in now. Hot dogs cannot be purchased on the day. There will be NO canteen available at either school or at the cross country on Wednesday. The Urunga P&C Committee

NEWS FROM OUR COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER JENNY LUXON

GREAT ART WORK FROM 3/4 BLUE

3D ORIGAMI My name is Erin Wall and I’m into all sorts of craft. I’d give anything a go! But there’s one thing in particular that I’m doing right now and it’s called 3D Origami. All of it is made from tiny pieces of paper, about 3cm by 2cm. That makes a lot of pieces of paper in each. It takes 102 pieces for the swan and 572 for the vase. I taught my class, 3/4 Blue how to make them and how to put them together. I was taught by my grandmother who researched it on the internet. She is very good. One day I hope to be like my fantastic grandmother.

BARK PICTURES In our class we were trying to make pictures of different things. To make our bark pictures, first Mrs Paxton showed us a large picture of a horse race. The background, the horses and the trees were all made out of paper bark. For our pictures we had to pull apart the pieces of paper bark into thin pieces and then glue them horizontally onto a piece of packing cardboard. For our trees we had to paint some bark with a mixture of black paint and PVA glue. We had to do this because the bark was similar to the background colour. Next we broke and cut the painted bark into pieces and glued them in the shape of a trunk and branches. For leaves we glued on lichen. Emma Maziano, Tegan Stone, Layla Sharkey, Savannah Ryan

Friday 12th April. We are asking for donations of suitable ‘Easter’ themed items for our Easter Raffle prizes. Can you please kindly return to school the sold tickets, money and a

donation to our Easter raffle. More ticket books are available from the front office.

DISNEY WORD TILES Mrs Wickham is collecting Woolworths Disney word tiles to use in her class for lots of educational and fun games for the Kindergarten students. If you shop at Woolworths and collect the tiles but don’t need them at your house, Mrs Wickham will gladly accept them! Pop them into the front office if you have some spare. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS Invoices for educational resources and the voluntary school contributions, with full details of what these fees cover, were sent home last week. These funds supplement the school budget and enable the school to supply additional and ongoing items throughout the year which benefit your child’s education. It would be appreciated if families could pay these amounts as soon as possible. If you wish, you may pay these contributions in instalments throughout the year. You may by cash at the front office or pay via our “Parent Online Payment” system which is accessed through our school website. Please visit www.urunga-p.schools.nsw.edu.au and click on the “Make A Payment” button. Fill in the details and tick “Voluntary School Contributions”. Please ensure you make separate payments for each of your children.

SCHOOL SOCIALS The Term 1 socials will be held this week. Stage 2 and 3 will hold their social on the school COLA on Wednesday afternoon (10th April) after the Cross Country. EASTER HAT PARADE—FRIDAY 12th APRIL As the Easter Hat Parade approaches, children in Kindergarten to Year 2 are encouraged to make their Easter hats at home and bring them into school on the day of the parade (Friday 12th April). Parents of K-2 students are invited to join their children for afternoon tea at 1.45pm. Students will then assemble in the bottom COLA at 2.00pm to parade their creations then walk down town. Mrs Arnold and Miss Brook BIG VEGIE CRUNCH! We had lots of students crunching and munching on yummy vegetables last week for the Big Vegie Crunch. It was fabulous to see a variety of tasty vegetables brought in lunch boxes. We hope everyone continues to pack some vegies each day to crunch on in ‘Crunch and Sip”. Did you know that only 5% of Australian children eat enough vegetables? In order to work towards improving this percentage, we need to increase children’s knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes towards vegetables. BOOKS! BOOKS! BOOKS! - Old Books Fest! - Gold Coin Donation requested! Finishes tomorrow!! There are quite a number of old books ranging from fiction, junior fiction, picture fiction and non-fiction now available for students (and our school community) to choose from. I am asking for a Gold Coin donation to choose as many books as you wish. The books will be available before school, lunch time and after school, in the Library or on the table at the back of the library (depending on weather). SAVE THE DATE - Our Mothers' Day BOOK FAIR is coming Term 2 Week 2! The Book Fair will run over a two week period - from Monday 6th May to Wednesday 8th May and Week 3 Monday 13th May to Wednesday 15th May 2019 - with lots of great books and novelties available. Just a timely reminder in front of the holidays, and that is, there are too many Long Outstanding Overdue books still on loan. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in helping your child to find and return their library books. Geri Jensen Love2Read VISITING PERFORMANCE In week 2 of Term 2, we will be having another visiting performance by School Performance Tours. The show is called “Three Experiments That Changed the World” and aligns with our Science and Technology curriculum. Notes will be sent home in the first week back after the holidays.
