Parent Loot

What is Parent Loot? Parent Loot can be given by you to your child/children when he/she shows respect and responsibility in a daily en-vironment at home. For example: Your child cleans his or her room without being reminded, you might want to recognize the responsibil-ity that was shown by your child by giving your child parent loot. We are confident that you can think of many examples of respect and responsibility that could be recognized/reinforced by giving Parent Loot. Parent Loot can also be downloaded from our Lucketts Elemen-tary School Website inset link to the website.

Lucketts Absentee Email [email protected]

We have established an absentee email address to receive infor-mation regarding student absences. Parents find the email absentee address to be very convenient to use. If your child is going to be absent you may want to send an email to [email protected]

to notify the school of the absence.

Library News

It’s reading contest time in the library! It is so important for all of our students to be reading every day. Daily reading for pleasure im-proves vocabulary and spelling, boosts comprehension, and helps students to do their best in every subject. The legendary Dr. Seuss was one of the biggest proponents of the importance of reading and we honor him in a few days with Read Across America Day. In keep-ing with this theme, the Lucketts Elementary will host a three-week reading incentive called Read Across America! For this school-wide reading incentive, classes will be divided into four teams (three clas-ses per team). All students will receive a reading log in their folders this week. To participate, all students need to do is read each night and record the number of minutes spent reading on their logs. Stu-dents will turn in their logs on Mondays and Thursdays for the next three weeks to earn points for their teams in head-to-head challeng-es. Participation is very important with this contest, as teams receive extra points for each team member who turns in a reading log. The team who wins the most challenges will be crowned the winner and all students on that team will win a fabulous prize. Please read the letter on the back of your child’s reading log for a more detailed ex-planation of this contest. I hope that you will encourage your children

to participate!

Counselor Corner

From the Counselor’s Corner

During the month of March we will be focusing on these topics in

classroom guidance:

Kindergarten – we will be focusing on cooperation

1st – we will be discussing respect for our differences

2nd – we will continue our series called “Talking with TJ”, in March we will be talking about listening and understanding someone else’s

point of view

3rd and 4th – we will be focusing on Conflict Resolution skills – we

will be learning about “I” Messages

5th – we will be discussing Decision Making

Each 9-weeks, Ms. Olshavsky and I team up to have the students participate in teambuilding activities during one of their PE times. We will be conducting these teambuilding times the week before Spring Break this 9-weeks. Our teambuilding activities are designed to get the students working on communication skills and problem solving as

a group.

SCA News

The SCA will be collecting pop/soda can tabs during the months of March and April that will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House located at Fairfax Hospital. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for the families of children that are hospital-ized long term at Fairfax Hospital. Pop tabs that are donated are sold as scrap metal and the money is used to continue to provide services for children that are ill and their families. Containers will be placed around the building for students to deposit pop tabs into, if your fami-

ly wishes to participate.

Music

What’s happening at Lucketts:

3rd Grade Musical: “Bebop with Aesop”

Tuesday, April 14

8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Due to all of the wonderful snow days this month, we have had to postpone our third grade program. The new date is Tuesday, April

14, 2015.

5th Grade: Fifth graders are dusting off their recorders and reviewing what they learned last year in fourth grade. They will be reviewing the notes B, A, G, C, and D. We will also be adding a few new notes that will allow us to play more advance music. Please remind your student

to practice his/her recorder music at home!

4th Grade: Fourth graders are very excited to be starting the record-er! They will start by learning the notes B, A, and G. Once they have the playing position correct and good tone with these three notes, we will move on to C and D. Please remind your student to practice his/

her recorder music at home!

3rd Grade: Third grade students are busy preparing for their musical, “Bebop with Aesop” The show will take place on April 14 at 8:30 a.m. & 6:30 p.m. Speaking parts are being assigned the first week of March. Thank you to the third grade teachers for their support and

flexibility while we prepare for this big event!

2nd Grade: Second graders will be talking about the texture of music and adding instruments to music to make the sound thicker. We will be defining and performing ostinatos. We will also be learning about

accents in music, what they look like and what they mean.

1st Grade: First grade students are working on rhythms this month. We will be discovering what it means to have no sound on a beat (a rest). We will also be reviewing high and low pitches and giving them

the names sol and mi.
