In the early times, people used their body parts for measuring things;but they did not know that getting their height is important to knowwhetherthey are healthy or not since there is an ideal height for aspecific age.

Their perception for being healthy is based only on appearance, if

you are thin it means you are unhealthy and if you are fat, then you arehealthy. Then Adolphe Quetelet came and introduced the use of Quetelet

Index or no most commonly known as BMI. He studied further theimportance and the things that contribute to the BMI. When the BMIbegan to exist, it gave knowledge to the people and it let thembecome aware and conscious regarding their health condition.

Although Quetelet designed it to describe the average man, hismain concern was defining the characteristics of normal man andfitting the distribution around the norm.

Nowadays, the Quetelet Index is renamed and modified to be theBody Mass Index or BMI. It is widely used by professionals, especiallyNutritionists, to help them determine if a patient is obese or healthy atfault.

In this research, the researchers will discuss al about BodyMass Index and its classifications. This research will not onlybenefit us, the researchers, but also the people who will be ableto read and understand Body Mass Index. After knowing Body Mass Index, people will start being self-

conscious to their health. Body Mass Index is a way to know ifone person is healthy through our height and weight that is rightfor our age.

These are the people that will benefit in these assessments:

The Nutrition Students, it is compulsory for the students tostudy BMI to help them to determine their patients health

condition and help them be health conscious. The Nursing Students, as a future nurse, it is also important for

them to gain knowledge about BMI, considering that nurses arethe ones assisting patients in the hospital, and the first to assesstheir patients.

Body Mass Index or BMIIt is an index of a persons weight in relation toheight and is determined by dividing the weight (in kilograms) by thesquare of the height (in meters).

MetabolismIt is the sum total of all the chemical reactions that occurin the body.

Calorie/sIt refers to the amount of energy in foods or expanded inphysical actions. Basal Metabolic Rate or BMRIt is the minimum calorific requirement

needed to sustain life in a resting individual. It can be looked at as beingthe amount of energy (measured in calories) expended by the body.

Desirable Body Weight or DBWA weight that is believed to bemaximally healthful for a person, based chiefly on height but modifiedby factors such as gender, age, build, and degree of musculardevelopment.

Type 2 DiabetesIs a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are highlevels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Body Mass Index helps you to determine your body proportion bythe help of your height and weight.

After reading and understanding what Body Mass Index is all about,we can now say that BMI is very important to our health by means ofBMI, we may know if we are healthy or not. Knowing our BMI is importantbecause your weight alone doesn't tell the whole story

A physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced byskeletal muscle that requires energy expenditure. Physical activity mayhelp you to reach your Normal BMI or it will cause you to becomeunderweight or overweight depending on what activities you did.

Basal metabolic rate also affects our BMI. Basal metabolic rate isthe energy need when the body is at rest and awake. Basal metabolicrate affects the gender, age, growth, height, temperature and fever

and stress. So, for example, the gender affects your BMR, men havehigher BMR than women because men have more muscle, and the BMRwill affects your BMI because women that has a lesser BMR than mencan have a less energy in doing some work and when you doesnt havea energy, for example in doing some exercise this may be the reasonwhy you will be obese.
