What is genre?
• Genre is a set of categories which any medium may be placed into.
• Examples include:• Film – Horror, Western, Comedy.• TV show – Soap, Quiz show, Sitcom.• Music – Rock, R&B, Jazz.
Why is genre important?
• Genre is important because it helps the film to be easily marketed. If the film has a set genre, it is easy to sell as people know what type of film it is.
Why is genre important?
• It is also important because the audience need to know what type of film it is so they know exactly what they’re about to watch.
More information on genre
• The things that make the medium be placed in a certain genre is called a convention. They are the things that all mediums of the same genres will include.
Example of conventions in films
• Horror – Gore, Death, Screams, Dark.• Western – Shootouts, cowboys, horses,
saloons.• Fantasy – Swords, Mythical creatures, castles.• Adventure – Quests, treasure, obstacles.
