What is malaria?

• Malaria is a disease that is caused by a parasite that is passed to humans through mosquito bites.

• Parasite = an organism that lives off another living organism.

• No, only a certain species of mosquitoes can carry malaria.

• It is only the female mosquitoes who can transmit the disease.

How can you tell if you have malaria?

• Symptoms of malaria include fever, headache and vomiting.

• If not treated, malaria can quickly become life-threatening by disrupting the blood supply to vital organs.

How does it infect humans?

• Once in the body, the parasites multiply in the liver, and then infect red blood cells.

• The job of the red blood cells is to carry oxygen around the body.
