It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he
gives to his beloved sleep.
(Psalm 127:2)
Ah, Summertime. We wait and wait and wait for summer. School kids count down the days until summer starts. We make summer vacation plans. We make great plans for our gardens and outdoor entertainment areas. We sing songs about the good old summertime. It seems like we wait all year for summer to arrive. We also joke about summer. Iowa, we say, has four seasons: fall, winter, spring, and road construction. In Wisconsin, they also call summer mosquito season. James Dent once said, “A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blow-ing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.” When summer is over, we look back and wonder where it went. It seems to go by too fast; that it is too short. (Technically speaking, summer is the longest season, lasting 4.66 days longer than winter.) We know why it goes by so fast. We set goals for the summer that are too lofty. We have too much to do and not enough time to do it all. We simply fail to take the time to enjoy this gift we call summer.” Summer is a time to get refreshed. We open our windows to let the fresh air in. We spend more time outdoors. We go for walks and go camping and fishing and ride our bikes. These are all things we do because our bodies need it. Our minds need it. Our souls need it. How many times have you needed a vacation from your vacation? You know what I mean. Your vacation is so busy you need to go back to work to recover from your va-cation. How often do you cram so much work into your yard that you’re too exhaust-ed to enjoy the fruits of your labor? God is very clear that we need to take time to relax and be refreshed. In fact, he commands it. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.” (Exodus 20:8-10) I know that you’ve made plans and that you’re busy, but I encourage you to take some time this summer to refresh your soul. Watch the sun rise and listen to the birds. Enjoy the smell of a new mown lawn. Try to count the stars. Appreciate the beauty of a dandelion. Go watch a tee-ball game (even if your kids or grandkids aren’t playing). Sit on your porch and read a book. Refresh your soul. Look to God for some rest.

Please contact Sarah Weiland or Gina DeBoer if you have questions or are interested in using your gifts in this way at Immanuel.

Happy Father’s Day!
At Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), we strive to build up and
empower Iowa kids and families. For us, Father’s Day is a
time to celebrate all the fathers and male role models we see
every day.
Many of the boys and young men that LSI serves in our
Bremwood and Beloit Residential Treatment Centers have
never had a positive male role model in their lives. But our
caring volunteers are there to help guide them.
In our Early Childhood fatherhood program, young men are
learning to become dads. They’re becoming confident and
active in their child’s life, and they are creating loving, bright
futures for their families.
You are making all of this possible through your support of
LSI. Thank you for responding to the love of Jesus Christ
through compassionate service!
Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual ori-entations. Learn more at LSIowa.org and Facebook.com/LSI.iowa.
On the Road to Success
As everyone was preparing for the Christmas season last
year, Ali was eager to finally give his family a gift he’d been
dreaming of: a second car.
After Ali came to the U.S. as a refugee from Somalia in 2014,
he dedicated his time to finding a job and building a better life
for his family. But he and his wife struggled to keep up with
both of their busy jobs and caring for their four children with
one vehicle.
“It was a very stressful time for my family, especially when
emergencies happened or schedules changed,” Ali says.
Ali decided to make it his goal to set aside money for a sec-
ond car. He used LSI’s Refugee Community Services Individ-
ual Development Accounts (IDA) program to save the money
he needed.
Through the program, Ali has received guidance through
basic financial literacy classes and one-on-one coaching to
prepare him for the new car-buying experience.
Now, Ali and his family are thriving. They have reliable trans-
portation, and Ali feels confident knowing his family’s needs
will be met every day.
“I’m very thankful for LSI and this opportunity,” Ali says. “It is
really good of them to offer this program, and it has made a
great impact for my family.”
