No. 15.2014 Thursday 11th September "Friends forever, learning together" Immaculate Heart of Mary School Newsletter Extract from reports written by Grade 3/4: Our Grade 4 camp was at Allambee and we had a fantastic time! Some activities at camp were the Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Initiative Course, Archery, Low Ropes Course, Orienteering, Billy Carts, Rock Climbing Wall, Vertical Play Pen and Hut building. We got a bead for each activity and made a bracelet at the end. To get a bead you had to be independent, encouraging and step out of your comfort zone. The cook’s name was James. The food was delicious. You could get a bead from the chef if you had nice manners. If you were stepping out of your comfort zone or did something independent you would get a star bead. The first night we had a bushwalk and we saw a few animals. At the end of the bush there was a look out. At the look out we turned off our torches and looked at the sky, we had to look for the satellites and the Southern Cross. Then when we got back we sat at the camp fire and had roasted marshmallows and sang songs with Mr Hayes. We did the reflector trail, the reflectors were white. Under the reflector there was a letter. We had a person to remember the letter and at the end we combined the letters to make the secret word. We all had a great experience! Grade 4 Camp

Extract from reports written by Grade 3/4: Our Grade 4 camp was at Allambee and we had a fantastic time!

Grade 4 Camp Camp Recount On the 27th of August, all Grade 4’s went to Allambee camp for 3 days. When we got there we started off playing a game. We had to roll a ball around a circle of people without it touching 2 people running. It was fun. Everyone got put in two activity groups. I got put in Group 1. Our team was called Team Sparkle Pants. The boys came up with the name. The activities our group had that day were, Archery, Flying Fox and Orienteering. My favourite activity was Archery because I hit the board and someone else’s board too. I also liked the Flying Fox because I was going really fast and I hit the tyre. That night, we all went on a bush walk with Mr Hayes. We pretended we were catching poaches, and it was pitch black. I was scared at first, but then I was fine. After the night walk we had roasted marshmallows and then we went to bed. On Thursday I got up at 10 to 7 and had a shower. I was ready by 7:00 so I had some free time. I just stayed in the rooms and lay on my bed. My activities that day were, Vertical Playpen, Hut Building, Billy Carts/Climbing Wall and Low Ropes. My favourite activity was the Billy Carts because I got dirty and I fell off HEAPS of times. It was really fun. I also liked the Vertical Playpen because I made it to the top in less than a minute. After dinner, everyone went orienteering. The word eventually spelt Billy Cart Hill. That night we watched Monsters University. I got heaps of marshmallows. I went to sleep straight away that night. On Friday my activities were, Giant Swing and Initiative Course. My favourite activity was the Giant Swing because I went full way. But when I pulled the rope I punched myself in the face. By Bethany, Grade 4/5

Year 4 Bible Readings The Grade 4’s had an Eisteddfod (at school) on Wednesday the 9th of September. Grade 5 and Grade 3 were watching the Grade 4’s while they read their Eisteddfod items ( Bible reading ). There are two grade 4 classes: Grade 3/4, with Mr. Potter and Grade 4/5, with Mrs. Colaciello. The student who won in Grade 3/4 was Riley and from Grade 4/5, it was Tamsin. The Judge was Mrs Ann Barrett. Riley and Tamsin won a beautiful Bible each. By Tamsin grade 4/5

Dear Parents,

School Renewal - SRC Surveys Surveys were sent out randomly to families last week. The due date is Friday 12th September. Could you please either complete them online or return the printed version to school by the due date. We thank families for taking the time to complete the surveys which forms an important part of our school renewal due in 2015. Naplan Recently our children in Year 3 and 5 had their NAPLAN results sent home. As you know, assessment of children’s progress, skill development, achievements and understandings continues to be ongoing at our school through school reports and parent teacher meetings. The result of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test for children in years 3&5 remains a single, out of context piece of assessment data which contributes to our overall collection of data. We continue, as in previous years, to advise parents to communicate to your children that this NAPLAN test result is a sample that is to be thought of in conjunction with his/her class work, school report and teacher’s comments. Should you have any queries regarding your child's test, we invite you to contact us for clarification. Sunsmart A reminder that school hats are compulsory in Term 4. Hats are available for purchase from the Uniform Shop for $9.00. Orders can also be left at the office.

Early morning Supervision A reminder to parents that there is no supervision at school before 8.10am. Please do not drop off students before this time as there are no staff at school. Supervision before 8.10am is parental responsibility. School starts at 8.45am. Andrew Chinn - Monday 6th October Andrew is an entertaining Gospel songs composer and singer. He has written many of the songs that we sing at school liturgies. Andrew is visiting our school on the first day of term 4. He will conduct a workshop with each of the classes and then we will finish with a whole school concert at 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome to join us. Book week We are celebrating Book Week on Thursday September 18th by having a dress up day. Students are asked to come to school dressed up as a character from a book. Students will be divided into mixed age groups and will rotate through four different activities. Children are asked to bring a copy of the book that their character comes from to school that day or a copy of the front cover of the book. The Day will conclude with a Parade and cake. Children will carry their book with them during the parade. Book Week visiting author - Mrs Yvonne Horsfield As part of Book Week, the students enjoyed a visit from Mrs Yvonne Horsfield. Yvonne is a published children’s author of three books, with a fourth one on its way. The names of her books are: ‘Meg, Mog and Miss Molly’, ‘Miss Molly Meets Little Joe’ and ‘Miss Molly’s Surprise’. Yvonne generously gave her time to read her stories to each grade. She spoke to the students about being an author and how she came up with her ideas for the stories. She also spoke about the process of publishing stories and what is required. Yvonne has been very fortunate to have her son, Garth Horsfield, illustrate her books. She also showed the students the original sketches that her son did for her books. Her fourth story, called ‘Naughty Norsca’’, is not published or illustrated yet. Yvonne read this story to the students in Grade 4/5 and Grade 6. To coincide with Book Week, the students, in those two grades, have been asked to choose a part of the story to illustrate on A4 paper and submit to her for judging. After Yvonne read her stories the students enjoyed discussions and question time followed by table activities. The school Library has purchased all three stories for the students to borrow and enjoy. Order forms were sent home with students who were interested in purchasing one of her books. A big thankyou to Yvonne for coming to our school and sharing her stories and experiences with us!
