Why the pool and gym staff should train together

Page 2: Chinn Emergency Preparedness

CONSIDER THIS . . .

What if . . . . a major incident (i.e. a life threatening injury or multiple victim accident) occurred at our facility and there were not enough trained people on duty to handle the situation?

Page 3: Chinn Emergency Preparedness

Who is trained to do what? Trained for basic first aid

Everyone

Trained to deal with minor incident

Everyone

Trained to deal with major incident

Lifeguards and pool staff

Trained to use the AED

Lifeguards and pool staff

How many people are needed in an emergency? At least 3 people are needed during a major incident to

handle the victim alone in order to provide optimum care.

This does not cover calling 911, going to get the AED and oxygen, meeting the ambulance once it arrives, crowd control, or dealing with any other issues which may arise such as a second emergency or complication.

Page 5: Chinn Emergency Preparedness

How many people are on duty?

63%

37%

Danger Zone

2-3 lifeguards

4+ lifeguards

Page 6: Chinn Emergency Preparedness

What does this all mean? It means that 63% of the time there are no more than 3

members of the pool staff on duty.

It means that more than half the time, if a major incident occurs, Chinn staff will have to rely on the help of bystanders who may or may not be there.

It means that the person in need of assistance may not receive optimal care due to lack of assistance.

Information which may need to be passed along to Emergency Medical Technicians may be lost.

What could happen? When the heart stops, if CPR is not administered

within 4 to 6 minutes, brain damage will occur.

Once the heart stops, a person’s chance of survival drops 7 to 10 percent for every minute that an AED shock is not administered.

SolutionsThere are two possible solutions:

To combine gym and pool staff in-service training.

To make every Chinn employee CPR for the professional rescuer certified.

Page 9: Chinn Emergency Preparedness

That means . . .

There is NO cost to the Prince William County Park Authority for either solution.

Both solutions can be implemented immediately!

Page 10: Chinn Emergency Preparedness

Why they will work. Both the pool and gym staff already have mandatory

in-service training every month.

No extra hours are required.

Basic CPR certification costs around $55 while CPR for the professional rescuer certification costs $70 on average.

Certification costs are already covered by the employee and the lifeguards pay around $180 for all their needed certifications, plus gym and pool staff are paid the same entry rate.

The Results The pool staff will have more team members to call

and rely on in the event of an emergency.

The gym staff will be more capable to handle incidents which may happen in the gym area.

Our patrons will feel safer using our facility as they will be better taken care of should something happen.
