LITURGICAL CALENDAR

From the Desk of the Oratory Chaplain, Canon Raphael Ueda

Today we celebrate Mission Sunday instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926, hence it is an opportune moment to introduce a brief history of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest which is dedicated to missionary activity. Still a very young con-gregation, the Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach and Canon Philippe Mora in Gabon, Africa, where we still have missions.

Monsignor Wach was formed under Guiseppe Cardinal Siri, who served as Archbishop of Genoa from 1946 to 1987 and who also was a strong candidate for the papacy in the conclave in 1978. After his ordination by Pope John Paul II in 1979, Monsignor Wach worked for Silvio Cardinal Oddi in Rome. During the 1980’s the still young French priest, Gilles Wach, was approached by more and more young men who wanted a traditional Catholic priestly formation; at this time he decided to try to bring

these young men together and to assist in their formation. Alt-hough he never initially intended to start a foundation, several Ro-man Cardinals urged him to form a religious community; thus the idea of the Institute already began to take form in 1988.

At this time, Divine Providence helped to find a bishop who was ready to give this courageous undertaking a canonical founda-tion. Monsignor Wach was finally brought in contact with the late Bishop Obamba of Mouila, Gabon, who invited the young com-munity to help him with missionary work in his Diocese; thus he gave the Institute its necessary canonical erection. At the same time, he appointed our founder as his Vicar General. Soon, with the help of Augustinus Cardinal Mayer OSB, of Germany, he was able to find an appropriate location in Florence, Italy, for the Seminary and Motherhouse of this quickly growing com-munity. (To be continued in a subsequent bulletin.)

St. John Cantius

[Jesus said to his disciples] “His lord said to him: Well done, good

and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things,

I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”

St. John Cantius, patron of Poland and Lithuania, was

born in Kenty, a small town in the Diocese of Krakow, Po-

land in around 1412. His parents, Stanislaus and Anne,

were pious country people, and John was, from infancy, a

child of great virtue and possessed of a sweet and innocent

character. After his studies were complete, he taught philos-

ophy while he was preparing for the priesthood and later

became director of the theology department of the Kra-

kow Academy. While striving for the heights of Christian

perfection, he was also a physicist and developed theories

which anticipated the work of Galileo and Newton.

During his time in Krakow, he became well-known for

his great generosity and for his generosity to the poor, es-

pecially toward needy university students. He would give

away all except what was absolutely necessary to sustain

himself. He made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, desiring to be

a martyr among the Turks; he also made four pilgrimages

on foot to Rome with the desire both to honor the Apos-

tolic See and to save himself from the punishments of pur-

gatory through the indulgences offered there daily. He died

at Krakow in 1473. He was beatified by Pope Clement X

on 28 March, 1676 and was canonized on 16 July, 1767 by

Pope Clement XIII. In the Roman Breviary, unique among

confessors who were not bishops, he is distinguished by

three hymns.
