    ENVELOPES FOR SCHOOL SUBSIDY AND

    CHURCH MAINTENANCE Thank you for contributing to offset our church maintenance and school subsidy obligations. As with a home, there are always unexpected repairs in the Parish, in addition to planned expenses. Thanks to your continued generosity, we have been meeting our ever-increasing expenses. The ongoing need for additional cleaning and sanitizing due to COVID-19 has resulted in continued expenses for products such as hand sanitizer and specialty cleaners After some recent heavy rain storms, portions of the Rectory roof leaked, causing damage to ceilings in the dining room and chapel, as well as the conference room. This will require major repairs to the roof and interior finishes. Anything you are able to give by using the green maintenance or yellow school envelopes, located in the vestibule, is deeply appreciated. Maintenance of the school building and modular units is the responsibility of the Parish. The parish is expected to support Reverend Brown School and Pope John XXIII Middle School. Thank You again.

    December 27 Collection: $ 2,667 * Heat & A/C: $ 577 *

    Christmas Collection: $ 11,348 * 2020-2021 Diocesan Assessment: $27,127 Collected to Date (Project Faith): $ 2,511 *

    * Includes Online Giving

    During this time of uncertainty, THANK YOU for continuing to support your parish. Please know that we are most appreciative for all of your donations. We all know how difficult things are financially for families. So, too, is it to run a parish, as expenses continue to rise. The parish is dependent on income from collections and Mass stipends. We are grateful for your continued and increased generosity in support of our parish, especially over the last year Please know that any donations earmarked for a specific purpose, such as maintenance or payment of oil bills, remain in the parish. We rely on the generosity of parishioners to be able to meet both planned and unplanned expenses. For whatever you are able to give, may God bless you; you and your intentions are always in our prayers. God always rewards a generous giver.

    A Few Gentle Reminders

    Wearing of masks: The wearing of masks in Church is required. Masks must be worn properly to be effective; that is, covering the nose and mouth. Please do not remove masks or uncover your nose or mouth when in Church. Please be considerate of others who wish to worship, and are following regulations.

    Cleaning of Pews: Thank you to those who have been willing to help clean and disinfect pews after Masses. Some Masses have more volunteers than others, so we are asking, if you are able, please help. We don’t have the maintenance staff to complete this process. We have sign up sheets in the vestibule, please check them on the way in.

    Ushers: We invite ushers and volunteers to help seat people in appropriate groups and observe social distancing. Seating in the sanctuary and in the choir loft is not being fully utilized. We do not want to risk any health issues due to improper social distancing.

    THANK YOU!

    Senior Moment—A Tree Falls On St. Joseph

    As the Christmas Season progresses, images within the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary take on more vivid reality. Implicit within the progression is the arduous census-necessary journey south from Nazareth to Jerusalem - surely no easy task for expecting newlyweds, even with the ever present backdrop of the Divine. Study opportunities of this past year have made the routine doings of Mary and Joseph’s days more visual for me. I feel all the more, their openness to under-stand my sometimes harried praise and prayers. This Christmas, I’d had the joy of selecting a manger scene for a newly engaged couple. The statuary I ultimately selected shows Mary and Joseph seated in close and affectionate proximity with fascinated gaze on their Infant Child, Jesus. In this most human setting, the sculptor well captured their warmth and amazement. My find led me to wonder at my own Nativity scene with symmetrical figures to the right and left of the Holy Child. The spacing now troubled me, and I took the unconventional leap of placing standing Joseph to the right shoulder of kneeling Mary. The mangered Infant will be centered before them on Christmas morning. Yes! My new arrangement took some getting used to, and the sentinel pine tree and St. Joseph took an initial tumble or two in their new positions, but I know that for me, I have gotten it right! On December 27, we celebrated the Feast Of The Holy Family, and on December 8, 2020, Pope Francis defined the start of the “Year Of St. Joseph”. May we, the Seniors in our own families keep in touch throughout 2021 with the “Holy Family”, especially remembering St. Joseph as example and caring intercessor. “St. Joseph and Mother Mary pray for us.”

    Immaculate Conception Cemetery Just as in life, we believe that in death the human body deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. The cemetery is an extension of the Church that ministers to our grief as the Church ministers to our faith. Being buried in the sacred grounds of a Catholic cemetery is an assertion of faith for both the deceased and their loved ones. In keeping with the Church’s tradition of respect for the body, remains and cremains should receive proper burial, entombment or inurnment.

    Immaculate Conception Cemetery is located on North Church Road. Contact the Parish Office at 973-827-9575 or [email protected] to make an appointment to obtain information about burial, entombment or inurnment arrangements.

    DAILY MISSAL

    Please use daily missals Monday - Friday located on table by the Baptismal Font. After Mass, if you would be so kind, return Missals back

    where you found them.

    FEAST OF FAITH The Sign of the Cross At the beginning of our prayer, we make The sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    THE WATERS OF BAPTISM When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
