Images need different formats depending on the reasons they need to be used. In the following slides 5 of the most common formats will be outlined

JPG – Joint Photographic Group

This is the most common way of compressing an image. Compressing it means that you have more space to store other files. This is good when you are using your camera because you can save more pictures to the memory card.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics

This was brought out after copyright laws with the GIF format made the need for it. It has a full range of colours and is especially good for images which have large coloured areas. It is mainly used for web images as well as screenshots as it is good for images containing text.

GIF – Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is the predecessor of JPEG and PNG. With a GIF file no detail is lost in compression. It has a limited range of colour therefore it is best with graphics containing few colours. It is mainly used on web images as well as animation effects.

These are widely supported bitmap files which create a very high quality image and are mainly used with line art graphics and images with texts. They are very large files and take up quite a lot of room on memory cards. They are used to maintain original image quality and are most commonly used in programmes such as Photoshop.

These are image files which are used within Microsoft windows. They are very large files and are uncompressed which means that they aren’t used a lot and aren’t web friendly so are only beneficial for Windows users.
