ILLUMINATING YORK

Illuminating York is now in its sixth year; using modern lighting and projection technologies to celebrate the city’s unique architecture and history.

Taking place each October, the Festival draws thousands of people to the city and has created specially commissioned digital artworks for many of the city’s historic buildings, including York Minster, the Yorkshire Museum & the Bar Walls, as well as churches across the city centre.

In 2010, the Festival returns to York Minster with Rose: a spectacular work featuring music, poetry and imagery which will light up the South Transept of York’s most iconic landmark; as well as several smaller installations, designed to allow visitors to get close to, and interact with digital art.

With the added opportunity to visit other famous sites in the city at night, Illuminating York offers visitors of all ages the chance to see York in a different light. The Festival runs from Wednesday 27 October to Saturday 30 October, from 19.00 to 22.00 each night.

Illuminating York is proud to present Rose, a Son et Lumière piece created by highly acclaimed British projection artist Ross Ashton, and the sound artist Karen Monid.

The duo return for this year’s Festival following their installation Accendo, the centrepiece of the 2008 festival, which lit the facade of the Yorkshire Museum and the Abbey Ruins in York’s Museum Gardens.

Rose, a 40 metre high artwork, will transform the Minster’s rose window and surrounding architecture into a breathtaking vision of colour celebrating the Yorkshire rose. The piece will use high power slide projectors to create gigantic ‘magic lantern’ effects covering the South Transept.

Using the centuries old rose window and the South Transept of the Minster as a canvas, this year’s main commission will explore aspects of the symbolism of the rose and its meaning as an emblem of perfection, purity and love . The visual imagery will be complemented by poetry and Minster choral music for a complete audio-visual experience.
