TRANSCRIPT

ON STAGESEPTEMBER 2014 – MARCH 2015

WELCOMEThese are exciting times for us here at YorkTheatre Royal. A theatre has operatedcontinuously on this site since 1744.

Within our walls we also have remains of a12th century hospital, an entrance to the 15thcentury mint and even a Roman well. It isimpossible to walk our stairways and corridorswithout feeling a deep connection to itshistory and the centuries of York citizens whohave shared the experience of live theatre.

However, the best thing about York TheatreRoyal is that, whilst we are extremely proud ofits heritage, it is not a museum.

The Theatre you see here today has evolvedover the last 270 years adapting to itsaudiences and its actors to ensure that it isalways delivering the best experience foreveryone who uses the space.

In March next year, we close in order toundertake the next stage in our Theatre’sevolution; you will find a lot more detail aboutour plans in this brochure, but, in a nutshell, what we are planning is more space in ourfoyers and better views within the auditorium.

The building won’t be closed for long and ourpanto dame Berwick will be back to launch thenew Theatre in December 2015 and wecertainly won’t be going away – we have somevery exciting plans for presenting great workin other venues whilst the Theatre isundergoing its transformation.

But that is all for the future, in the meantimewe welcome you to another packed season ofentertainment and look forward to seeing youhere soon.

When Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone'sunruly brother, her anger quickly turns to defiance.Creon, in an attempt to retain control, condemns her to atorturous death - she's to be buried alive.

Acclaimed playwright, Roy Williams (Kingston 14, SuckerPunch), takes Sophocles' play and by placing it into acontemporary setting brings Thebes into the 21stCentury, reinforcing this tales relevance and vitality.

This is a timeless story about loyalty and truth, humannature and human behaviour. It is a story about whathappens when one person stands against the rules.About how we make meaning out of life and death andwhat, in the end, really matters.

The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of youngapprentice pirate, Frederic, and his attempts to escape alife of crime. On a rocky Cornish sea-shore we meet theeponymous pirates and their charismatic Pirate King. Thearrival of an unbelievably large number of Major GeneralStanley’s daughters brings chaos – and eventually,Sergeant of Police and his men – into the pirates’previously idyllic existence.

Gilbert satirises the nobility, the military, the police andthe supposed virtue of a ‘sense of duty.’ The marriage ofhis words and Sullivan’s music gives us such gems as ‘I amthe very model of a modern Major-General’, ‘When afelon’s not engaged in his employment’ and ‘Poorwand’ring one’.

It’s the 18th century.

Kate Hardcastle is a young lady fixed up to meet theeligible Marlow with a view to marriage. Marlow is ayoung gent who is tongue-tied with the upper classesand downright lecherous with commoners. So whenMarlow is tricked into believing Kate’s ancestral home is acountry inn, and mistakes Kate for a lowly barmaid whatcould possibly go wrong? Plenty.

Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of onevery long night, She Stoops to Conquer is a delightfulromantic romp filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem.

The latest in a string of comedy hits from Director ConradNelson (The Government Inspector, Lisa’s Sex Strike,Accidental Death of an Anarchist, The Canterbury Tales,The Grand Gesture), this version is more West Ridingthan West Country.

‘I declare that there is disorder here! Things can’tgo on like this, can’t go on…You must have sometraining. You must learn everything.’

Ingmar Villqist’s Helver’s Night is a thrilling and gut-wrenching play that charts the relationship betweenCarla and her young charge, Helver.

Helver is fascinated by fascism – not by the ideology, which he is unable to grasp, but by the bravura of themovement. As a violent occupying army rampagethrough his town, will Helver become a victim of thisfascination?

From the winners of the Young Angels Award 2014,director Hal Chambers’ and designer Zoe Squire’s boldcreative vision thrusts the audience into the heart of the conflict.

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world ofFranz Kafka. Drawing on a rich vein of earlywriting and less well-known short stories, thisextended and redeveloped play, first seen at YorkTheatre Royal in 2010, presents a layering andinterweaving of eerie dreamscapes. It is shotthrough with Kafka’s hallmark foreboding andalienation, absurdist humour and strugglinghumanity.

MR PUNTILAAND HIS MANMATTIBy Bertolt Brecht Translated by Lee HallDirector Natalie Quatermass

Puntila, a rich landowner, suffers from a dividedpersonality – when drunk he is human andhumane; when sober, rude and self-centred. Heplays havoc with his workmen, his women, hisdaughter’s marital arrangements and the loyaltyof his sardonic chauffeur, Matti.

Brecht has produced an extraordinary comicparallel about a world at peace, but riven by thestubborn realities of the class divide. A lesserknown comic masterpiece, with songs, biting witand physical humour – Puntila is one of Brecht’sfinest works.

A NEW WAY TO SUPPORT THE NEXT 270 YEARS OF YOUR THEATRE

A theatre has been operating on this site since 1744. In 1769 the legendary theatre impresario Tate Wilkinsonhad the vision to purchase a Royal patent for £500 (£32,000 in today’s money) and the Theatre has been‘Royal’ ever since.

What stands here today, however, is not a museum; it is a thriving and vibrant space still doing what it didwhen it first opened – presenting great drama and culture for the citizens of York and beyond. Withinvestment and support from the wider community York Theatre Royal has continually evolved to ensure itremains a dynamic theatre of which the city is quite rightly proud.

Play your partOver the next five to ten years we have exciting plans to continue the Theatre’s journey and with the launchof our new 1744 Club we would like you to join our next adventure. Your generosity could support our workon stage, provide Youth Theatre membership to a disadvantaged child, offer an up and coming director aplacement on one of our productions, or fund a script development workshop for a new play. From £20 permonth you can help to shape our future. Your support can help give us the platform on which to build anorganisation that continues to offer exciting and relevant theatre to the next generation and beyond. Itwould make Tate Wilkinson proud.

Please contact Vicky Biles (General Manager) or the Development Team to discuss how you can help us tocreate a York Theatre Royal for the future: 01904 658162 [email protected]
