The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,

founded in 1959, is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational

organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries, and

property damage — from crashes on the nation’s roads.

The Highway Loss Data Institute,

founded in 1972, shares and supports this mission through scientific

studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses

resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles

and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model.

Both organizations are wholly supported by auto insurers.

– Fatality risk in head-on crashes is 46 percent lower

• Side impact crash test at 50 km/h

– Fatality risk in side impact crashes 70 percent lower

• Rear impact test simulates being struck from behind at 32 km/h

– Neck injury risk is 15 percent lower

– Risk of neck injury requiring 3+ months treatment is 35 percent lower

Recommended vehicles for young drivers26 live interviews resulting in 723 broadcasts reached audience of 39 million

• Stay away from high horsepower. Vehicles with more

powerful engines can tempt teens to test limits.

• Bigger, heavier vehicles protect better in a crash. There

are no minicars or small cars on the recommended list.

• ESC is a must. This feature, which helps a driver maintain

control of the vehicle on curves and slippery roads, reduces

risk on a level comparable to safety belts.

• Vehicles should have the best safety ratings possible.

At a minimum, that means good ratings in the IIHS

moderate overlap front test, acceptable ratings in the IIHS

side test and 4 or 5 stars from NHTSA.

Best choices: $7,300 - $19,900

Good choices: $4,000 - $9,900
