You will notice this weekend that the third, rose-colored candle on the Advent wreath is lit. Each of the colors used throughout the Church’s seasons has special significance. White, for example, signifies “joy.” Purple signifies “penance.” The rose-colored candle is lit on the third Sunday of Advent to signify a “welling-up” of joy at the approach of the celebration of the Lord’s birth on Christ-mas Day. The rose color is used because it is in between purple and white—we might think of “rose” as “muted joy.” Saint Paul tells us in today’s Epistle to “Rejoice always!” It is for this reason that the traditional name for this Sunday is Gaudete Sunday or “Rejoice Sunday.” The reason for this joy is, of course, the mystery of “God-made-flesh,” Jesus, our Emmanuel, whose birth we are eager to celebrate at Christmas. We rejoice because we know that we are not lost or abandoned because in Jesus we have the real promise of life eternal.

Special Collection for Retired Religious A special collection will be taken the weekend of Dec. 10 & 11 for our retired religious. As we consider the unique role senior religious have played in the history of the Church in the United States, we cannot help but recall their tremendous example of service. We remember with gratitude the tens of thousands of sisters, brother who taught or served in foreign missions, and the priests from religious orders who dedicated themselves to parish and pastoral ministry. Please be as generous as you can to this worthy cause.
