Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, former KeTTHA Deputy Minister, Panglima Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of KeTTHA and Tan Sri Peter Chin, GreenTech Malaysia chairman, visiting the exhibitions at IGEM 2014.

Powering the green economyTHE International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) is back for the sixth consecutive year to pave the way for sustainable economic growth.

IGEM 2015 will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Sept 9 to 12.

It will feature exciting exhibitions and seminars that will see business owners and leaders from private and public sectors come together to discover and forge lucrative eco-business opportunities.

Since the inaugural IGEM in 2010, the event has played a catalytic role in growing the green technology market not just in Malaysia but also in the Asean region.

This international event has recorded approximately RM6bil worth of business leads over the past five years.

It is only appropriate, then, that the theme Powering the Green Economy was chosen for this year’s IGEM to represent the immense potential of green technology as a key driver in the country’s socio-economic progress.

Under this theme, IGEM 2015 will focus on five key areas: l Green energyl Green transportl Green buildingl Solid waste technology and managementl Clean water technology and management

Engine for growthIGEM plays a great role in

propelling the green economy forward.

It supports the nation’s green agenda by increasing public awareness and acceptance of green technology, fostering cross-country exchange of knowledge, ideas and innovation, and developing a thriving green economy.

The organisers, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia (commonly known by its Bahasa Malaysia acronym,

KeTTHA) and Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia), are expecting approximately 50,000 visitors to this year’s IGEM, along with 400 exhibitors from 20 countries.

They also project that the event will generate business leads worth RM1.2bil.

GreenTech Malaysia is an organisation under the purview of KeTTHA and is tasked with catalysing the growth of green technology as a strategic engine for Malaysia’s socio-economic growth.

GreenTech Malaysia’s chairman Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui believes it is crucial that Malaysia has an international platform such as IGEM to spur the nation’s green growth.

“With green technology developing rapidly around the world, IGEM serves as a central platform that gathers leading green technology companies from across the globe, providing visitors access to the latest developments in the various green technologies and applications at one venue,” he says.

International experts share insights

IGEM 2015 will offer a host of conferences and forums that will bring current challenges in sustainability to light.

One of the key events is the Green Financing Forum themed Driving Green Growth: Unleashing Public and Private Finance for Growth.

The product of joint efforts between GreenTech Malaysia and IBFIM (Malaysia International Islamic Finance Centre), this forum will focus on the expertise of local and international finance experts on the challenges, opportunities and current developments in the global green financing market.

The Green Financing Forum will feature leaders from the World Bank, UK Green Investment Bank, Connecticut Green Bank and Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

There will be two key panel discussions, which will highlight: l Promoting policies and

Creating a sustainable communityMALAYSIAN Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia)’s ultimate goal is to transform Malaysia into a green community by 2030 – but first, it aims at robustly positioning the country as a green technology hub by 2020.

The organisation champions various initiatives under four key flagships, which are:l Green Malaysia Plan –

Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia (KeTTHA) will be unveiling the Green Technology Master Plan in the near future.

It will outline strategic action plans focusing on emission mitigation efforts across these five key sectors: energy, transport, building, waste and water.

This plan will serve as a reference for government efforts in developing green technology practices, programmes and activities in line with the 11th Malaysia Plan.l Green procurement –

This involves encouraging private and public sectors to embrace sustainable products and services to reduce the negative impact of human activity to the environment while conserving the natural environment and resources.l Electric mobility –

GreenTech Malaysia’s plan for

developing an electric vehicle (EV) marketplace for Malaysia includes the recently launched ChargEV – a publicly accessible EV charging station network that will provide greater charging convenience to its users.

This measure will allow users to charge their vehicles without hassle or worry, effectively mitigating range anxiety (a common concern of users looking to switch to EV).

Under this initiative, GreenTech Malaysia plans to install 300 ChargEV stations across the country by next year and 25,000 stations by 2020.

The Electric Mobility Blueprint, which will lay the foundation for the establishing of the EV sector, will also be introduced this year.l Sustainable living – The

latest initiative under this banner is the implementation of the Low Carbon Cities Framework and Assessment Systems across Malaysia in partnership with the Malaysian Institute of Planners and local councils.

This includes the development of a baseline study of a city’s carbon intensity, which will lead to the formulation of appropriate measures to reduce levels of carbon emissions.

Not to be missedVISITORS to the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2015 will be presented with valuable networking opportunities and industry insight throughout

the various workshops and seminars conducted concurrently during the four-day event.

Law Kok Soon, director of corporate affairs at Pecol.

Reducing energy consumption at home is one of the first steps to leading an eco-friendly lifestyle. Harnessing

free heatTO cope with the country’s hot and humid weather, many Malaysians do not think twice about switching on their air conditioning units.

Offices have their air conditioners running throughout the day while hotels and hospitals are forced to run their cooling systems on a continuous basis.

Homeowners are also leaving their air conditioning units on for extended periods of time to ensure comfort and a good night’s sleep.

However, while we are enjoying the cool air, greenhouse gasses are constantly being emitted into the atmosphere as a by-product of the air conditioning compressors (the units that are installed outside homes and buildings).

These gasses are made up of various compounds capable of absorbing infrared radiation and trapping heat in the atmosphere, contributing to the gradual rise of the Earth’s temperature.

Fortunately, Pacific Engineering Sdn Bhd (Pecol) offers solutions to limit greenhouse gas emissions as well as the opportunity to reduce electricity bills and the carbon footprint of homeowners and businesses.

Advanced technologyWith decades of experience

and expertise – it was established in 1968 – the company manufactures various types and sizes of water heaters under the Pecol brand for domestic, commercial and industrial use.

These products reclaim the heat generated by air conditioning units and use it to heat water without extra electricity consumption.

OVER the last decade, there has been an endless debate about global warming and its various effects, which include extreme weather changes, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, ecosystem shifts and how these events are causing animals to go into extinction.

People are quick to blame industrial corporations for emitting large amounts of carbon dioxide due to fossil fuel burning, agricultural businesses for producing methane gasses as a result of rearing livestock, and deforestation activities that have been conducted in the name of development.

However, until a solution is discovered to stop or reverse the devastating effects of global warming, people need to realise that change must first begin at home.

Education and awareness are the first steps to leading an eco-friendly lifestyle and developing a greener future.

Beginning a new lifestyleFounded in 1968, Pacific

Engineering Sdn Bhd (Pecol) has been pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly products and renewable energy.

As the industry leader in energy-saving water heating technology, the company wants to encourage energy saving and eco-conscious lifestyles through its new Positive Eco Living campaign.

The company is aiming to not only reach out to industrial partners, existing customers and its other direct stakeholders but also to the wider public, as it believes that leading an eco-friendly lifestyle is the responsibility of every individual.

The campaign is a nationwide exercise that will be promoted through community and social events, trade exhibitions and social media platforms, among other forums.

“We have been championing eco-friendly lifestyles for decades.

Positive eco living

Therefore, we have the obligation to propagate this lifestyle to the public and harmonise our activities with the environment,” says Ramani Nair, vice president at Pecol.

With the Government backing green and eco-friendly initiatives, the company is confident that with more awareness and education, Malaysia will be able to reduce its carbon footprint, especially if everyone puts more effort into adopting this new lifestyle.

“Malaysians need to make smart decisions, maximise resources and discover positive elements in their day-to-day lifestyles,” says Law Kok Soon, director of corporate affairs at Pecol.

“Any green initiative that generates a high amount of awareness, such as the Earth Hour initiative, will also bring awareness to sustainability issues.

“Therefore, if we are able to increase awareness through the Positive Eco Living campaign, and through that more attention to the green issues in Malaysia, more Malaysians will start to adopt eco-friendly practices,” says Law.

“It may not be possible to completely stop consuming resources immediately, but we can

reduce energy consumption one step at a time and minimise the use of resources as much as possible,” adds Ramani.

Fun family activityOne of the key elements of the

Positive Eco Living campaign is an educational event for 1,000 families that will take place in the near future.

Open to the public, additional invites will be extended to Pecol’s existing and potential customers. The main purpose of the event is to promote and share views on sustainable living methods in a fun and family-oriented atmosphere.

“There are currently five million households in Malaysia, many of which use air conditioners, making it a mass-producing heat element. By reaching out to 1,000 families, we can spread awareness about reducing heat emission and build upon that platform to discuss other eco-friendly lifestyle changes,” says Law.

“This event allows the public to share ideas about reducing their carbon footprint, including issues that are related to waste management, lighting and energy consumption,” says Ramani.

Ramani Nair, vice presidentat Pecol.

This means that the process of heating water is generated for free.

“Using our hybrid hot water storage tank system, an hour’s worth of heat from a single horsepower air conditioning unit is enough to heat water for an entire household and keep it warm for up to 48 hours,” says Law Kok Soon, corporate affairs director at Pecol.

“Another advantage is that as the heat is immediately channelled away from the air conditioner to the hot water storage tanks, the air conditioning units are likely to have a prolonged life span,” says Law.

Taking advantage of the technology acquired from the United States, Pecol also offers a solar hot water system that harnesses the sun’s rays to heat the stored water.

Customers can also choose to install a hybrid system that combines both the solar and air conditioning water heating systems at the same time.

“We provide both of these systems as an option to meet the needs and wants of the customers. It also helps to heat up a larger volume of water.

“Some customers may not use their air conditioning system regularly and the weather may also be unpredictable. This hybrid system allows customers to have adequate hot water supply without the need to use extra electricity,” says Ramani Nair, vice president of Pecol.

Nair continues to say that while some people may be deterred by the higher costs incurred as a result of adopting a green lifestyle, the company is offering a solution that enables customers to recuperate their initial cost within two to three years.

Pecol is the industry leader in providing hot water solutions to

international and local hotel chains and public hospitals throughout the country.

The company also manufactures

commercial heat pumps and mini heat

pumps.

Participants of the event will not only experience a fun-filled weekend for the entire family but receive a special gift from Pecol that will help them start their sustainable living change and be eligible for discounted room rates at participating hotels throughout the country.

Pecol will be announcing details of the family event at IGEM.

With great prizes up for grabs

and fun activities in store, this family event will not only entertain but also educate the public on the essentials of eco-living.

Making renewable energy profitable

The Bus Rapid Transit system, Malaysia’s first electric bus service, is a first step towards greater sustainability in the transport sector.

THE STAR, TUESDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2015

IGEM 2015 7

IN an ideal world, there would be no debate about using renewable energy sources to power our lives.

Unfortunately, elements such as cost, convenience, efficiency and reliability continue to put renewable energy in second place in the global energy hierarchy.

However, climate change scenarios and breakthroughs in technology have triggered a change in mindsets of communities and policy makers.

The question is whether this is enough of a push to make renewable energy a priority in more countries in the future.

The main challenge with renewable energy is that it is expensive. Though initial cost may be significantly higher than conventional methods, once costs are recovered – usually in a relatively short amount of time – renewable energy is more cost-efficient and even profitable.

Here are two examples of renewable energy projects that have had a positive impact on the Malaysian community.

Feed-in tariffs A feed-in tariff is designed

to encourage the use of renewable energy source. Its implementation has the capability to move a nation towards self-sufficiency in the area of energy as it helps reduce carbon emission.

The benefit of implementing feed-in tariffs is that any unused energy generated can be fed into the national grid and energy companies pay the owners for this energy.

In Malaysia, feed-in tariffs began in 2004. Currently, it is possible to sell energy through a feed-in approval by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (Seda).

The rates that Seda approves depends on the type of energy used, the electricity capacity, meeting the installation criteria and the commencement date of the energy feed-in.

Types of energy eligible for application are biogas (the use of organic gases in energy production), biomass (using biologically derived material that is renewable in nature), small hydropower (a smaller version of hydroelectric generators) and solar energy (using photovoltaic panels to generate electricity).

Though there have been a few revisions and improvements to the feed-in tariff policy over the years, there is still some way to go before it can be considered beyond reproach.

However, the fact that it has been implemented and that a significant number of private individuals and companies are taking advantage of it is an indication that Malaysia is moving in the right direction.

Electric busesA few years ago, the Malaysia

Green Technology Corporation began testing Chinese electrical buses in Malaysia.

The approximate cost of a diesel bus is RM500,000; the cost of an electric bus is about RM800,000. However, the lower amounts of fuel used and the almost complete elimination of emissions will cover the costs of an electric bus.

The buses have a mileage of 250km to 300km per charge and with about 20 charging stations around the Klang Valley, they are quite a feasible method of public transportation that is also cleaner and greener.

On June 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officially launched the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Malaysia’s first elevated electric bus service, at the BRT Complex Sunway. On June 2, the buses started plying a 5.4km route in and around Bandar Sunway.

The BRT project is a collaboration between Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and Sunway Berhad under the Government’s Public-Private Partnership programme. It cost a total of RM634mil.

The system uses 15 electric buses that drive on dedicated lanes. The BRT-Sunway line serves at an interval of every four minutes with each bus having a capacity of 67 passengers and a travelling speed between 30kph and 40kph. They can operate for 12 hours before the next charging cycle.

Prasarana Group chairman Tan Sri Ismail Adam has stated that the BRT-Sunway line will serve an estimated 500,000 people in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya. It is anticipated that the service will transport about 2,400 passengers per hour this year, with numbers expected to rise to 5,200 in 2035.

Selangor’s green future

GREEN technology and renewable energy are buzzwords for a global multi-billion-dollar industry, with new opportunities and investments shifting to the east in recent times.

Research by the German Federal Ministry found that environmental technology and resource-efficiency reached a global market volume of 2.5 trillion (RM9.6 trillion) in 2013, with energy efficiency standing out as by far the biggest lead market.

It is not surprising that countries all over the globe are trying to gain market shares in this industry.

Besides economic reasons, a lot of attraction is caused by the environmental factor, which fuels hope for a sustainable growth perspective and creation of knowledge-based jobs.

Asia has been catching up with its more developed peers ever since and Malaysia is one of the forerunners of this success story.

Currently the third largest solar module manufacturer globally, Malaysia has much to offer with Selangor being the centre of this development.

Due to the state’s abundance of knowledge workers experienced in electrical and electronics industries and, more specifically, semiconductor production, the focus on the manufacturing of solar panel-related products has become a natural choice.

While the sunny weather and government policies to introduce volume quotas for green energy support this industry, there is certainly more to it.

Selangor offers the most developed infrastructure and transportation networks available in Malaysia. Three airports and the largest port in the country are part of these networks.

Aside from solar energy, it is important to highlight that biomass projects, environmental management and green building activities are also part of the green technology agenda in the state.

Several of these sub-sectors are supported by different incentive schemes of the Federal

Government and different agencies such as the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation.

Moreover, a Green Technology Financing Scheme worth RM1.5bil has been introduced, which will offer further funding for green projects.

In Selangor, these efforts have attracted companies to invest in biomass power plants and solar panel parks as well as international corporations that invest in solar cell manufacturing.

The Malaysian Investment

Development Authority has registered about 17 new energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in Selangor, including ones by large multinationals such as Panasonic.

With the greater availability of green technology, more Malaysian companies are placing importance on energy efficiency while real estate developers are using renewable energy as energy sources for projects.

There are already malls in Selangor such as Setia City Mall

Passive income guaranteed ESTABLISHED in 2012 with the vision to become a leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency, Suria Infiniti has made a name for itself as a one-stop solutions provider.

Pushing forward using effective marketing, new technology and an experienced team of employees has proven to be a winning formula in building a healthy relationship with clients.

Suria Infiniti has a total of 20MW commissioned plants that are up and running. These have given Suria Infiniti a strong track record and built its confidence in dealing with clients. The projects in different locations and of various capacities have led the company to develop into what it is now.

The solar industry is booming worldwide and Malaysia has shown its participation by introducing the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) policy; an initiative by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda).

The FiT allows policy owners to sell their generated electricity to a local utility company at a premium rate.

The introduction of FiT has boosted the renewable energy business in Malaysia for service providers and the manufacturing industry.

Operation and maintenance is essential to ensure the performance of the system.

Suria Infiniti provides operation and maintenance services to residential and commercial owners to ensure a healthy photovoltaic (PV) system.

Owners also have the option of obtaining performance insurance, which is essential to assure their

investment, particularly for those who want to cushion their losses during a downtime.

“Even though PV systems have less moving parts, they still require minor maintenance to ensure the systems can perform well for the coming years, thus assuring your

Selangor is the centre of the country’s solar module

manufacturing industry and welcomes investments into this and

other green technology sectors.

investment,” says Mohd Syahrul Nizar Abdul Ghani, managing director of Suria Infiniti.

The investment required to own a PV system is gradually reducing to an affordable rate compared to the years before when only a selected few could afford it.

Suria Infiniti has taken this opportunity to introduce a locally assembled inverter that gives owners a bonus for their FiT premium rate.

The inverter is available exclusively to Suria Infiniti. It is a string inverter type that offers various capacities from 4kW up to 24kW.

This is good news for future applicants who are applying for upcoming years as they will be able to shorten their return-on-investment by using locally assembled solar modules and inverters.

that cover a certain percentage of their energy uses and demand with solar energy.

In 2012, the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) announced its plans to turn Selangor Science Park 2 into a Solar Valley.

Similar trends can be found in regard to biomass and biogas plants in recent years.

Selangor’s large plantation operators have already tapped into this potential by making use of extensive biomass from oil

palm plantations.Besides that, new projects by

Worldwide Holdings Bhd are expected in Kuala Selangor, which will compete with similar plants by KUB-Berjaya Sdn Bhd in Hulu Selangor to be the largest of its kind in the state.

Selangor welcomes green and clean projects to develop a sustainable and golden future for the state.
