“Every Child is a different kind of flower, and all together, make this world a beautiful garden.”

Author Unknown.

On behalf of all of the Communities for Children Playford team,

welcome to the CFC Newsletter, Autumn edition for 2019. With

the school holidays ending and the new school year starting, for

some parents and their children it may be for the first time. The

Raising Children website has some excellent articles on starting

school – how to prepare you and your child. Some key points within this article include:

• Involve your child in getting prepared for school: get them to try on

their uniform, pick out a lunch box, drink bottle, labelling school items

and getting their school bag pre-packed with a hat and pencil case etc.

• Read a children’s book about starting school with your child. Reading

books about school together can help you talk with them about their

feelings. A good book to read is ‘Starting School’ by Janet Allen Ahlberg

or ‘Starting School’ by Jane Godwin and Anna Walker.

• Make a bit of time after school for a catch up and a chat about school.

For more tips go to

As the year progresses, we continue collecting memories and

experiences that are passed on from generation to generation.

Here at Playford Communities for Children, we would like to give

you some ideas to make those memories, and experience what

SA has to offer.

Nature Play SA website has some amazing ideas like:

• Collect coloured autumn leaves and thread them on a

string to make a necklace, garland or decoration.

• Go on a nature treasure hunt.

• Go for a walk in a Botanic Garden and feel and smell the cool, damp air.

You can find these and more amazing and really creative

ideas at natureplaysa.org.au

There is public holidays coming for Easter and Anzac

Day, have you thought about what you are going to

need or do?

First things first, safety is paramount, so please make

sure all safety boxes are ticked off if you are planning a

family trip for the holidays.

Keep in mind some of the following factors:

• Weather

• Amenities

• Access to health care providers (Hospitals, Clinics, etc.)

• Roadworks, it’s always helpful to know in advanced if there is any roadworks to plan for alternative

ways, to do that visit the department of planning, transport and infrastructure social media.

• Make a list of what you are going to need and invite your children to help you tick all the boxes by

preparing everything on the list, this is a fun way to bond and spend quality time with the little

ones.

If you need some ideas on where to go, visit parks.sa.gov.au or playford.sa.gov.au

You will find the right park for you and your family.

MALPA AnglicareSA’s Playford Communities for Children, Onkaparinga Communities for Children and Aboriginal Services, have partnered with The Malpa Project, to co-fund the Young Doctors project. The 15-week Young Doctors project teaches Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal school students, aged 9 to 11, to be health ambassadors and positive role models within their communities. When The Malpa Project is invited to a community, there is a gathering of Elders, respected community leaders, parents and educators to discuss “What do your kids need to know to lead strong, healthy and long lives?”. Selected school community leaders then develop the program to meet the needs of the local children, with Aboriginal traditional knowledge and ways of healing brought together with Western medicine. Program activities are aligned with the Australian School Curriculum and equip children with knowledge in nutrition, hygiene, environmental health, wellbeing and identity, health literacy and leadership. The Young Doctors then spread their learnings to friends, family and the wider community. The children are taught by respected members of their communities, including Elders, in a fun-packed but structured program. Malpa is a Warlpiri word which means ‘friends on the journey’ and the idea of children being ‘doctors’ is deeply embedded in Aboriginal culture. In Playford, students from Munno Para and Blakeview Primary School’s graduated from the Malpa Program in Term 4, 2018. A joint graduation was held on 11th December with Salisbury Downs Primary school and was attended by over 90 people. The students experienced a variety of activities including, first aid training, hospital visits, dental visits, what to do in an emergency and fishing to name a few. Here are some quotes from the students about the Malpa Program: “I’ve liked everything! My favourite activity has been learning CPR,” Jordan, 10 “I liked going to the hospital and learning about how to keep yourself safe,” Harlequinn, 10 “I liked the excursion to the hospital because we got a tour of the hospital and I got treated like a person who is hurt. I’ve also like the different food we’ve tried,” Bailey, 9

NEW & EMERGING COMMUNITIES

New and Emerging Communities Program continued to organise and

run small-scale children programs during school holidays in order to

engage CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) children and their

families.

During January 2019 School Holiday:

Uniting Communities New & Emerging Communities, Anglicare SA

Playford Communities for Children and Playford Council organised

and ran FREE 3 day cooking program to give our kids cooking skills and encouraging healthy eating for

families on a budget at Elizabeth Rise Community Centre.

Each day the children (5-12yrs) explored an Easy Meals pack from the Playford Food Co-op and cooked

them for shared lunch! All the kids involved had fun and enjoyed being together.

Cooking new recipes helps children to develop a positive connection to all different foods including fruits

and vegetables.

Forming a positive experience with fresh foods is so important because healthy foods are the foundation

for good nutrition. This program gave the kids an opportunity to meal plan, look for recipes and share

ideas on why and how to make meals healthier for the whole family.

NECP continued to build relationships and partnerships with clients and other stakeholders through

running events like this. If you would like more information about similar upcoming training in Playford

please contact Muhama.

Healthy Communities Project comes to Smithfield

Plains & Davoren Park!

The City of Playford Healthy Communities team are starting an exciting

new project in the Smithfield Plains and Davoren Park suburbs. It is an

exciting opportunity for those living in the area to help shape your

community and make your neighbourhood a happy, healthy place to live,

work or play. To give you an idea of the possibilities, 3 great

projects achieved in recently in Elizabeth Grove include:

• Laneway art brought community members together in aim to improve the look and

safety of a major laneway in the area. “It was great to have the whole family, from kids

to grandparents, working together to contribute to the community and also promote

Secombe Street Reserve through sports-themed artwork,” project participant Jasmine

Brouwers said.

• Fruit trees in public spaces. A community fruit trees action group assisted in

planning, planting and maintaining communal fruit trees in Burgate Reserve.

• Free sports-equipment library at Secombe Street Reserve. Located in

small wheelie bins at the reserve, sports equipment is available for all to

use whilst at Secombe Street.

A fun and interactive session will be held on Monday 4th

March, 9.30-12 at the John McVeity Centre (182 Peachey Road

HOT CROSS BUNS

Step 4

Make flour paste: Mix flour and water together in a small bowl until

smooth, adding a little more water if paste is too thick. Spoon into a small

snap-lock bag. Snip off 1 corner of bag. Pipe flour paste over tops of buns

to form crosses. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until buns are cooked

through.

Step 5

Make glaze: Place water and sugar into a small saucepan over low heat.

Stir until sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil. Boil for 3-4 minutes. Brush

warm glaze over warm hot cross buns.

Method

Step 1

Combine flour, yeast, sugar, mixed spice, salt and currants in a large

bowl. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add milk.

Heat for 1 minute, or until lukewarm. Add warm milk mixture and

eggs to currant mixture. Use a flat-bladed knife to mix until dough

almost comes together. Use clean hands to finish mixing to form a

soft dough.

Step 2

Turn dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes, or until

dough is smooth. Place into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic

wrap. Set aside in a warm, draught-free place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or

until dough doubles in size.

Step 3

Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Punch dough

down to its original size. Knead for 30 seconds on a lightly floured

surface until smooth. Divide into 12 even portions. Shape each

portion into a ball. Place balls onto lined tray, about 1cm apart. Cover

with plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm, draught-free place for 30

minutes, or until buns double in size. Preheat oven to 170°C or 190 ̊C

fan-force.
