IEEE PES TRANSFORMERS COMMITTEE SPRING 2018 MEETING CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF TRANSFORMER STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT! THE INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS, INC. www.transformerscommittee.org February 7, 2018 Dear Committee Members and Guests: You and your spouse/companion are cordially invited to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, to attend the Spring 2018 100‐year celebration meeting of the IEEE PES Transformers Committee, March 25–29. We look forward to welcoming you to our city, located at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers. Known as both “The Steel City” for its more than 300 steel‐related businesses and the “City of Bridges” for its 446 bridges, Harper’s Bazaar recently named Pittsburgh one of the “Best Places to Travel in 2017.” The city was also just named one of four Tech Hubs to watch in 2018 by VentureBeat.com. HOTEL INFORMATION: Our meeting will be held in the heart of downtown at the historic Omni William Penn Hotel, 530 William Penn Place. Less than a 10 minute walk to award winning restaurants near the Theatre District and Market Square, the Omni is also just across the street from the UMPC Building which allows access to Pittsburgh’s light rail system—the “T”—that will take you all over the city, free of charge. Our discounted guestroom rate at the hotel is US$149 per night and includes complimentary wireless internet in guestrooms and hotel public space. Visit the Committee's website for a link to reserve a room, or if you call the hotel, mention "IEEE Transformers" to receive the group rate. The cut‐off date for the group rate is Friday, March 2, but we expect the hotel to sell out before this date. GETTING THERE: The Omni William Penn Hotel is located approximately 30 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Taxi fare is approximately US$50 one way from the airport, and taxis are required to accept credit card payments. UBER and Lyft (US$35) are also approved for ridesharing at the Pittsburgh airport. Self‐parking across from the hotel at the Mellon Square parking garage is US$19 for cars per night. Valet parking at the Omni is $36 for cars per night. MEETING REGISTRATION: Register on‐line for social events and the meeting and express your interest in attending the technical tours at www.transformerscommittee.org. Register by Friday, March 2, 2018, to receive a US$50 early registration discount. The on‐line registration system will be disabled on Wednesday, March 21, to print name badges and finalize counts. The cost to register on‐site is substantially higher than the advance registration price, and some events may not be available for on‐site registration. WEATHER: Spring in Pittsburgh is cool but comfortable, with an average high of 53°F/12°C and evening low of 32°F/0°C. Most of our events are indoors, and we are hoping for great weather during your visit! Dress for the meeting is business casual. SATURDAY EARLY BIRD EVENT: If you arrive early, please join us for an evening of music and fun at Tequila Cowboy. Order dinner off the menu and set your own return schedule. See flyer for details. SUNDAY EVENING 100 YEAR CELEBRATION RECEPTION & DINNER: We are planning a 100‐year celebration event for Sunday evening — reception, dinner, special awards and entertainment by Don McMillan, "Named #1 Corporate Comedian" by the CBS Business Net. Space is limited, and we expect this event to sell out quickly. You must sign up by March 21 to attend. See flyer for details and register early!

Maintenance, operation and management of the electric power grid in our digital era require processing of rapidly growing quantities of data. In this tutorial, we explain how machine learning (ML) and advanced statistical methods are beginning to affect areas of interest to Transformers Committee participants. For example:

‐   Statistical tools for improved data visualization ‐   ML algorithms for classifying transformer operational status ‐   Bayesian networks emulating transformer condition assessment by human experts ‐   Reliability statistics and thermochemistry providing a new approach to DGA

2. Learning Objectives This presentation will cover:  What are ML algorithms? How do they work? Do they really learn?  Statistical graphical tools that help to understand the data  Real applications of ML and statistical tools in the transformer business  How chemical thermodynamics provides insight into DGA  Reliability engineering statistics transforms DGA  How reliability‐based DGA and machine learning are applied at a big utility

3. Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this presentation, attendees will gain an understanding of the following:  The meaning of ML and how ML is applied to understand transformer condition  Public domain statistical tools and algorithms readily available to the community  How reliability‐based DGA works and what information it provides  How these advanced tools fit into asset management for an electric power system

Distribution Transformer Quality Assurance (Single‐Phase Padmount and Polemount)

 — Technical Presentation —

Thursday, March 29, 2018

by Thomas Champion, Yamille E. del Valle, F. Dean Williams

1. Abstract

Electric utilities deploy many thousands of single‐phase distribution transformers on their systems.  As such, they represent a major investment for utilities. Although transformers are purchased with the expectation that they will provide 30 or more years of reliable service, they sometimes fail prematurely due to poor build quality. Many NEETRAC utility members were concerned with the overall quality of transformers currently produced and requested that NEETRAC initiate a collaborative project to evaluate transformer quality.  Transformers from seven North American manufacturers were included in the evaluation. Forty‐six transformers were subjected to a battery of tests/examinations that included watts‐loss, impulse,  TTR and visual examinations. In addition, 12 units were selected for a detailed teardown and examination. In a follow‐up project, the results were shared with each of the manufacturers with the goal of soliciting their feedback and understanding any improvements implemented since the evaluation was conducted.   This presentation has three parts. Yamille del Valle will provide an introduction and initial project overview. Dean Williams will give an overview of the visual examination results and current research efforts concerning padmount corrosion. Thomas Champion will give an overview of the electrical tests conducted and the teardown portion of the project.

2. Learning Objectives The objective of this presentation is to share the NEETRAC transformer quality findings with the  IEEE Transformers Committee members with the goal of raising quality issue awareness and  generating a dialog on how the industry can work together to help minimize quality problems that  can shorten transformer life.

3. Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this presentation, attendees will gain an understanding of the following: •  Procedures used to assess the overall quality of single‐phase distribution transformers •  Areas where quality improvements are needed to maximize transformer life
