Presidents MessageEven with the major down turn in the Stock Market, and the US economy at

an all time low, the State of Utah has been somewhat isolated from that intensity. Weneed to look forward to the year 2009 with a new outlook on life. We have a newPresident of the United States with the opportunity to make some necessary changesthat will hopefully bolster the economy and reduce unemployment and to bring usback to a time of growth and prosperity especially to our industry. We need to look to the past and be thankful for what we have been blessed with andlook to the future to sharpen the saw and cut out the excess. When times are lean weas a people seem to become the most productive and creative. Some of the greatestinnovations were created in times of need or out of pure necessity. Utah and the surrounding states historically are slower to move both up and downdue to their conservative nature. With today’s economy this is a good thing for us.

In the 3 major construction areas:• The residential has been the most dramatically impacted. This part of the industrywill take the longest time to rebound and build itself back to the rapid growth that wehave experienced over the past few years. We are still seeing steady contracts in theluxury homes. Our state is quite resilient and we should expect residential to moveforward when the initial housing glut begins to right itself.• The Commercial market has also taken a down turn but with the large projects inthe downtown area and the growth in some of the campus projects we are fortunateto have work that would have otherwise been put on hold.• The industrial market was the least impacted. There are many projects that areforecast throughout the area in the mining and gas and oil are maintaining theirschedules and should be built in this fiscal year.As contractors, distributors, manufacture representatives, and associates we need topull together and recognize how fortunate we are in this area and look deep into ourorganizations to see how we can improve, grow, create opportunities and maintain asemblance of order in our businesses. Panic will never produce a good outcome. I would like to thank IEA’s executive committee, and the board of directors for theexcellent job they have done and the many hours that were expended to support theIEA. Thank you to the new officers and board members that will serve this year. Ilook forward to the opportunities that the year 2009 brings to our industry and to theAssociation. May we all be rewarded for our efforts.

The Program and its Purpose

The Intermountain Electrical Association has established the IEA Education Fund Scholarship Program to reward the academic excellence of sons and daughters, as well as the financial need of its members and their employees.

Administration of the Program

All phases of the scholarship competition, including selection of winners and determination of the amount of the scholarship awards, are managed by the eighth member IEA Scholarship Selection Committee. This committee is appointed by the IEA Board of Directors. All decisions made by the committee are final concerning the selection process.

Conditions of Eligibility

Applicants must: 1. Be dependents of IEA members or

their employees, who are in good standing as of March 1 of the current year.

2. Attend or plan to attend an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school.

The Application Procedure

Applicants must: 1. Be certain they meet the

qualifications described in this policy.

2. Fill out an IEA Scholarship application.

a. Complete and sign the application.

b. Secure a current and official transcript

c. Give the application to a school official for completion of the applicant appraisal and transcript information

d. Obtain three (3) letters of recommendations from non-relatives.

e. Mail completed applications, an official transcript and three letters.

f. Return all application materials postmarked no later than March 15 to:

The Selection Process

IEA Selection Committee has total responsibility for selecting the award winners on the basis of student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, work experience, financial need, and an applicant appraisal.

This Committee receives the applications, makes the selection of award recipients, and determines the amount of the awards.

Announcement and Distribution of Awards

All applicants will be notified regarding their recipient or non-recipient status on or about May 1.

The Scholarship fund will be distributed from the IEA office. Students will be required to furnish tuition vouchers, receipts or canceled check for tuition to redeem award, as is the case for reimbursement for book and lab fee expenses.

Responsibilities of the Applicant

Applicants to the IEA Scholarship Fund Program should remember that it is their responsibility to fulfill these requirements:

1. Gather and submit the information necessary for the Committee to select the IEA Scholarship Fund Program recipients as described.

2. Apply for admission to colleges, universities, or other post-high school education programs.

3. Meet the entrance requirements of the institution they have chosen.

4. Gain admission to the institution of their choice.

Obligations

No obligation of any kind will be imposed upon award winners by IEA. Further, IEA assumes no obligation in connection with the granting of awards. However, IEA reserves the right to alter or discontinue the IEA Scholarship Fund Program at any time.

Notes:1. Award Recipients will be

asked to notify IEA of their acceptance of the award by May 15.

2. The student is solely responsible for returning the completed application and a current and official transcript to IEA postmarked no later than March 15.
