HEREDITARY FRUCTOSE

INTOLERANCE AND DENTAL

CARIESARJUN RAJ . B

What is Hereditary Fructose Intolerance?

Page 3: Ida

Fructose intolerance is a recessive genetic disease in which the patients lack the gene which code for an enzyme called aldolase B in the liver which is responsible for digestion of fructose and sucrose.

Page 4: Ida

• Fructose is a 6C compound• It is a ketose• It has a keto functional group in the Second carbon atom.

Structure of fructose

SYMPTOMS:Nausea and vomiting if fructose or sucrose is consumed in any form.

Hypoglycemia if fructose is consumed

Mild jaundice which can be observed as yellowish discoloration on the skin and sclera

Dental caries is not seen in these patients.

Clinical examination

Palpation Eye examination Liver biopsy

By palpation we can identify hepatomegaly and spleenomegaly which are the symptoms of HFI.

By examining the eye we can identify the presence of jaundice which is another symptom of HFI.

Biopsy can indicate the Abnormal level of enzymeEspecially lack of aldolase B

DENTAL CARIESDental caries literally means TOOTH DECAY

An irreversible infection usually bacterial in origin that causes demineralization of the hard tissues( Enamel Dentin and Cementum) and

destruction of the organic matter of the tooth, usually by production of acid by hydrolysis of

the food debris accumulated on the tooth surface .

MICROBIOLOGICAL BASIS OF DENTAL

CARIES

Streptococcus mutans

After gram staining found to be gram positive

Grown on selective agar medium like Lauria media (fructose and sucrose rich).

Treatment for HFI

Fructose free diet is the best treatment for avoiding complications like liver failure and deathIt is unusually seen in children that they restrict themselves from consuming sweets and chocolates who suffer from this disorder.
