Narrative StructureParanormal horror movies tend to follow a linear narrative structure.

Todorov TheoryParanormal films don’t always follow the Todorov Theory. Todorov’s theory is a theory he believed could be applied to any film which follows five stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving and new equilibrium.

E.g. Paranormal activity

The Plot

• A lot of different camera techniques are used in paranormal films. One camera technique used is Handheld. This shows the viewers their point of view. This will create suspense and tension.

• There is a lot of different editing techniques used in paranormal films. The most used editing technique is montage editing which creates tension and narrative enigma’s throughout the film as the editing is so quick that it confuses the viewers.

• There is a lot of different sound techniques used in paranormal films. One common sound technique is diegetic sound. This is a sound which is from a source seen on screen.

• In paranormal films there is only really one type of character type and that is flat characters. This is because they’re very complicated to understand because they’re normally ghosts and demons haunting a family home.

Character types

15

• In paranormal films the most common setting is to be inside of someone’s house, normally a family household where young children live.

• Common themes in paranormal themes are the following:Possession by demon, alien, ghost, etc.

Chill of being watched/stalked by something unknown.

Character who possess a natural scent which allures the opposite

gender, sometimes to distraction.

Setting and themes

Character representations in the sub genre paranormal are quite stereotypical usually. for example a majority of females that feature in paranormal films are portrayed as being vulnerable and in need of protection. usually the women would be within the age ranges of teen and young adult as horror (paranormal films) are aimed at this target audience. Children are very similar to women in a sense that they are very vulnerable, however in most recent films children are the character that eventually get possessed as it is unpredictable and counter stereotypical. The male character is usually portrayed as being the heroic character in most paranormal films. His technique is used to make the audience scared and make them think that the narrative can happen to anyone.

Characters representation and mise en scene

17

• Paranormal films are quite frightening because they’re based on true stories and the footage you see in films are first hand and it creates many narrative enigma’s. For example: “Could this be happening to me when I’m asleep?”

• It is scary because people are being haunted in their own home and throughout the films you hear sudden loud noises and movement.
