arizona Heart Foundation translational Research center

Dear Colleagues, Industry Partners and Friends,

Over the past 18 months, executive members of the International Society

of Endovascular Specialists (ISES) joined by faculty and representatives

of the Arizona Heart Foundation (AHF) have traveled from continent to

continent visiting and exchanging information with key opinion leaders in the

endovascular field.

A reoccurring theme began to surface. Too much repetition on the same

topics by the same speakers without presentation of data (Registries and

Randomized Trials) from which those attending could apply to their practice

setting. While there was no lack of effort to present the latest and the best from

the international platforms the recipients were frequently left with incomplete

answers, continued questions and uncertainties about appropriate treatment

and therapeutic recommendations. While this was not entirely unexpected, it

did refocus our educational direction for .

Thus, the “i of the Storm” theme.

The frenzy of worldwide meeting activity seemed to resemble the swirling

and misdirection of an approaching storm. What was needed and being

sought was an area of calm where rational positions could be explained and

supported with results. The “i of the Storm” represents the anticipated end

product of our annual meeting where we hope to bring a coherent, relevant

and scientifically based information package to address many of the unresolved

issues surrounding the essence of our endovascular existence.

Data presented – Debated with Resolution.

Our goal at is to create that atmosphere of productivity in the

calm and beauty of Scottsdale, Arizona, our “i of the Storm”.

Respectfully,

Edward B. Diethrich, MD Zvonimir Krajcer, MD

Footnote:

We had no anticipation that Sandy would impact the Northeast. There is

certainly no association with our “i of the Storm” graphics and the

unfortunate natural disaster and the lives lost.

Diethrich, MD and Marvin WoodallModerators: Jacques Busquet, MD and Donald Reid, MDIndustry Panel: Anthony Semedo (Medtronic)Clinical Panel: Clifford Buckley, MD and Rodney White, MDParticipants will converge from around the world to explore how inter country collaboration can expand the horizon of the endovascular field by examining the strengths and weaknesses shared by all. Members of the ISES team have traveled from continent to continent to create an atmosphere conducive to this type of forum in the backdrop of iCON2013.

Data – Debate and Resolution can create a consensus not previously appreciated and we bring our colleagues closer together regardless of their origins.

SeSSiOn iX 4:00–4:30 JeVt historic Supplement: “behind the Iron Curtain”It is not uncommon in the history of medicine that a significant contribution was not recognized or attributed to its originator. When one appreciates the enormous impact of the Iron Curtain where an entire people became completely isolated from the rest of the world, a later recognition of a profound series of discoveries is understandable.

Such is the case with Professor Nicolas Volodos who for years living in the Ukraine, was faced with a communication barrier. For the first-time ever, the Journal of Endovascular Therapy is proud to present a supplement extolling the momentous contributions of this Ukrainian surgeon. This special issue will be distributed during the session where this historic journey is portrayed.Contributor: Krassi Ivancev
