Introduction

Land Conservancy

Aging doesn’t just happen to people. Places grow older too, and sometimes fall out of use. Abandoned sites deteriorate, becoming dan-gerous to those who may venture in out of curiosity to have a look.

In New York City, an abandoned elevated train track sat vacated for decades. Today it is a thriving park called The High Line. The Rails-To-Trails Conservancy oversees 20,000 miles of abandoned rail lines converted to trails throughout our country. In Crystal Lake, Illinois an abandoned quarry has become the Three Oaks Recreational Area, with hik-ing, fi shing, swimming and sailing among the available activities. The background and top bar photos on this page were taken at that site.

Reclaiming former commercial properties for recreational use is a wonderful means of expanding public parks and eliminating the dangers that are inherent in derelict buildings and their surrounding properties.

ICON is proud to be a part of many projects where abandoned commercial sites have been converted to public recreational lands. This catalog is a small sampling of the thousands of structures ICON has provided for improve-ments to our country’s outdoor public spaces.

Three Oaks Recreation AreaCrystal Lake, IL

Part of a former quarry of construction aggre-gates in Crystal Lake, Illinois is home to a 450 acre recreational site. Vulcan Materials deeded the land to the city in 2006, the culmination of a deal that began in 1991 in exchange for mining rights of another tract of land in the gravel-rich Algonquin Township. Today, the Three Oaks Recreation Area provides a multitude of outdoor recreational activities, including fi shing, boat-ing and swimming. There are also a three mile

multi-use trail with an interpretive boardwalk and several picnic shelters. The children’s area has a playground and spray park amenities. A 2,000 SF pavilion houses indoor activities.

I-Span™ Mega-Shelters

ICON Shelter Systems Inc. can design, engineer and fabricate conventionally framed open steel buildings made from “I” beams to cover entire playgrounds, hockey rinks and sport courts. Side-to-side spans range from 60’ to 150’, and lengths are unlimited. These structures can also be enclosed for use as indoor arenas, storage facilities and activity centers. Typical framing is “I” beam main framing members with “C” & “Z” purlins and girts for cladding attachment. Ad-ditionally, we utilize bar joists and truss girders to carry roof loads in our larger square footage buildings.

Frame Finish Options and Powder Coat Colors

Prime Painted

Factory-priming protects the steel components from corrosion throughout the shipping and erec-tion process. The steel is cleaned to remove loose mil scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter. The cleaned steel will then be prime painted with quick dry, lead and chromate free alkyd primer. Finish painting in the fi eld is required.

Hot Dipped Galvanized

The hot-dip galvanizing process produces a zinc coating on steel products by immersion of the material in a bath of molten zinc metal. The steel to be coated is fi rst cleaned to remove all oils, greases, soils, mill scale and rust. Because galvanized steel requires no maintenance for decades, its use in public construction is an effi cient use of public funds.

E-Coat and Powder Coat

ICON’s premier steel coating is a combination of liquid epoxy primer and two coats of TGIC polyester powder coating. The process is:1. The steel is shot-blasted to the specifi cation of SSPC-SP10 (shot-blasted to near white condition), removing all oil residue, mill scale, weld spatter and slag. 2. The steel is immersed in zinc phostphate in an eight stage pre-treatment process. 3. It is immersed in an electro-statically applied liquid epoxy and coated to a uniform 0.7-0.9 mils. This E-coat totally encapsu-lates the part, preventing rusting. 4. A double coat of TGIC polyes-ter powder is applied, one coat of color and one clear coating for a fi nal fi nish that is 8-12 mils thick.

In highly corrosive environments, ICON recommends a hot-dipped zinc galvanizing prior to powder coating. This may produce a less smooth fi nish once coated.
