Welcome Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the ICAE2013,
the Fifth International Conference on Applied Energy, and to the
beautiful city Pretoria. The ICAE has grown substantially after the
successful conferences in Hong Kong (2009), Singapore (2010), Italy
(2011), China (2012) and firmly established itself as one of the
premier international platforms in all areas of energy research and
applications.
Same as the post ICAE conferences, the ICAE2013, powered by the
international journal, Applied Energy, seeks to showcase what is
new and exciting in energy research and development that offer
opportunities for translation into sustainable solutions. With
“Energy innovations for a sustainable world” being the theme,
major topics of the ICAE 2013 include renewable and green energy
resources, advanced energy technologies, energy conservation in
buildings, energy systems, environment and climate change in both
technology and policy issues. Selected papers from the conference
will be recommended by the scientific committee for further
consideration of publication in prestigious journals including Applied
Energy, and other renowned international journals. Awards for best
papers will be evaluated and announced by the scientific committee
during the conference.

Pretoria, the host city of ICAE2013, is the political capital of South
Africa and is 50 km away from Johannesburg. Attractions of Pretoria
include the Union Buildings for South African presidency, the
Botanical Gardens, National Zoological Gardens, Wonderboom
Nature Reserves, and many museums and galleries. You may also
visit the most fantastic sites such as Cape Town and the Kruger
National Park after the conference. Enjoy the conference and the
tour in South Africa!

Practical Guide
The 5th International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE) will be held at the Hatfield Campus of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The University of Pretoria was established in 1908, and has become one of the leading higher education institutions on the African continent. Currently it has more than 50 000 students on campus. More information on the university can be found from http://web.up.ac.za
Pretoria can be best reached from the OR Tambo Airport at Johannesburg via shuttle or Gautrain services, see the relevant information on the conference website http://www.applied-energy.org/general.html
Presentation Venues
The main conference venues are in the Conference Centre (Building No. 50 in the following campus map) inside the University campus, with supplementary venues at the Graduate Centre (Building No. 52) and the Building of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (Economic Building, Building No. 68 in the map). The campus map and a sketch of the Conference Centre layout are enclosed below. Keynote speech will be held in the Sanlam Auditorium, which is able to accommodate 300 people, and a secondary venue “Conference 100” is equipped with video facilities to watch the keynote speeches delivered in Sanlam Auditorium in case there is a need to break away the large number of audience. There is also another venue CSIR room (known also as VSR RAADSAAL) which will be used for presentations. The three venues

Sanlam, Conference 100, and CSIR will be used for presentations during all the three days from 2nd July to 4th July.
Besides the 3 presentation venues at the Conference Centre, there are 5 lecture rooms from the Graduate Centre building and 2 lecture rooms from the Economic Building to serve the conference. The following rooms from Graduate Centre will be used from 2nd July to 4th July: 1-76, 1-74, 1-70; while rooms 1-64, 1-56 of the Graduate Centre will be used only during the first two days 2nd July and 3rd July, and will be replaced by the two rooms EB 1-25, EB 1-18 from the Economic Building on the 4th of July.
The following table lists all the presentation venues with abbreviations which are used in the detailed programmes in the late part of this booklet.

Registration/Reception and Exhibition Venues
Registration venue can be found inside the Hall of the Conference Centre, along with exhibition desks from our sponsors such as ESKOM, KWAZINTO, and SANEDI amongst others.
Tourisms booking and ATMs
Tourism service provider Sure Glenwood Travel will have a booking desk at the Conference Centre for two hours per day (one in the morning, one in the afternoon); they have also a permanent office inside the Student Centre (Building 45 in the Campus Map), and can be easily found when you walk along the corridors of the Student Centre. There are also several ATMs (from Nedbank, Standard Bank, SABC, etc.), a book store, and restaurants inside the Student Centre.
Lunch, Welcome Cocktail and Banquet Venues
Lunch will be served inside the Conference Centre. The welcome cocktail session will also be organised inside the Conference Centre in the evening of 1st July. The conference banquet will be outside of the campus, at the Monument Restaurant (Function Centre, Voortrekkermonument, Corner Eeufees & Christina de Wet Road, Fountains Valley, Groenkloof Nature Reserve, Pretoria, http://www.monumentrestaurant.co.za/contact-us.html, GPS 25°46'51"S , 28°11'36"E). Buses will be organised to transport delegates to the banquet venue in the evening of 3rd July; however, delegates who prefer to drive themselves can use the above information to locate the venue. Bus departure time will be announced in the conference and can also be found from the registration desk.

Speaker Guides
Length of presentation material should be in accordance with your
time allocated. You are requested to load your presentation files
before the session starts. Each oral presentation at the breakaway
venues is limited to 20 minutes, which include the questions and
answers. Please refer to this Program booklet for actual
presentation times. You are kindly requested to be present in the
relevant presentation venue at least 15 minutes before the session
starts. A biosketch of the speaker within 50-100 words can be
supplied to the session chair, which may include your name, title,
affiliation, paper title, and short description of your research
interests and positions etc.
Each presentation room is equipped with a laptop computer with a
data projector. PowerPoint is the standard presentation format. The
computers in the meetings rooms are provided to Window-based
PC Users. Conference volunteers will be available to assist you in
case you encounter difficulties to use the IT equipment.
