Killin placed firmly on Tourist Map
Christine Webster displays the Healing Stones
Killin is placed firmly on the Map.More tourists are viewing Killin as aperfect place to stay - and that's goodnews for local businesses. With itscelebrated Falls of Dochart, goodchoice of shopping, hillwalking andfishing - combined with its colourfulhistory and legends - Killin has longbeen recognised as an ideal base forexploring the Highlands. More recentdevelopments have also helped raiseKillin's profile. The BreadalbaneFolklore Centre has certainly made aname for itself since it opened in Julylast year. Figures show that there hasbeen an even greater number ofvisitors with nearly 96,000 visitors sofar this year which can be comparedto just over 71,000 in 1994 and 33,000at the old Tourist Information Centrein the Main Street in 1993.
The movie industry is also helping toplace Killin firmly on the map as ithas strong connections with nationalheroes. James Fraser, Director ofLoch Lomond, Stirling and TrossachsTourist Board said "Killin andBreadalbane have very strong
associations with Clan Gregor and wehave worked closely with filmdistributors, United InternationalPictures, to maximise the publicity forthis area arising from the Hollywoodblockbuster Rob Roy starring LiamNeeson and Jessica Lange."
Mr Fraser went on to praise thevoluntary efforts made by Killin andDistrict Tourist Association and KillinTraders' Association to furtherenhance Killin's appeal for visitors.Mr Fraser said "Events such as KillinHighland Games, the new Killin FolkFestival and regular country danceevenings, together with the villagefloral awards scheme, made animportant contribution to visitors'enjoyment of Killin and will, I amsure, help persuade many of them tocome back again." But it is thosewho work in Killin who are bestplaced to say how the season hasfaired. A survey conducted amongKillin members of the Tourist Board- which includes accommodation andretail establishments as well as visitorattractions - has shown that many feel

this year has been better than the lastfew years. The exceptional Summerweather was frequently cited asplaying a major role - particularly bythose catering for lovers of the greatoutdoors, such as the Glendochart andMaragowan caravan and campingsites. Perhaps, also partly due towarmer climates, it seems that morepeople are opting to enjoy thecountryside on their own doorsteprather than travelling abroad as manyguest house owners, such as MrsWillison of Dalchenna, have noticedmore UK visitors who also seem tobe staying longer. Word of Killin'sattractions seems to be spreadingabroad. Killin Crafts remarked thatthere appears to be a greater numberof German, French and Dutch visitors.
Local businesses hope to build on thissuccess, with many currently attendingtourism training courses funded byForth Valley Enterprise and theEuropean Regional DevelopmentFund. It is also hoped that initiativessuch as the Tourist Board's AutumnGold campaign will help to extend theseason into November.

The Council met on 12 October in theLesser McLaren Hall.
Dr Mairi MacColl was in the Chair.Regional Councillor Susan Duke waspresent as was also CouncillorKenneth Campbell (of the new"shadow" Unitary Council). Twelvemembers of the public were present.
Improvement to Killin Water Supply
Mr Alan Stewart, Group Leader,Central Region Water Services, showed a video of work carried outto improve water supplies similar towork currently being carried out inKillin. This work was reported in theJuly issue of Killin News and willcost £1,147 million. The result willbe a plentiful supply of good qualitywater to meet the demands of eventhe busiest tourist season. Levels ofchlorination should also be controlledso that we don't get excesses at anytime.
Mr Stewart answered questions andwas thanked for his presentation.
Re-siting of Children's Play Areain Breadalbane Park
The two options for the relocation ofthe play areas, are near the mainentrance, the other between the roundhouse and the putting green.
The second option was chosenalthough some councillors wereunhappy at the less than accurate mapshowing the two sites.

Management of Loch Lomondand Trossachs Area
The Scottish Office wish to set up aManagement Group to manage eitherLoch Lomond and the Trossachs(including Killin) or two areas, oneLoch Lomond and the other theTrossachs. Killin Community Councilopted for the second alternative, thatis, the smaller unit, the Trossachs.
It was felt that the one large unitwould be too dominated by theparticular problems and issuespertaining to Loch Lomond.
Killin Folk Festival
The Traders' Association have givena donation of £200 to the CommunityCouncil for the use of the Park as acamp site during the Festival.
Community Council Project Grants
Two projects are to be put up forgrants:
1 Hedges planted round BowlingGreen; and
2 Bulb planting on bank area ofBreadalbane Park.
Police Matters
The Annual Questionnaire oncommunity satisfaction with Policeperformance has just been received.A councillor agreed to fill it in onbehalf of the Council. Some felt, however, that a visible Police presencewas required and suggested there-introduction of foot patrols.
SA
StrathfillanCommunity Council
The routine business of the Council iscontinuing satisfactorily, mainly due toour delegated groups, such as villageenhancement and the environment. BillPaulin also reported that the NewsletterTeam are working very enthusiastically. The Corron Trust Project has beenshelved until April 1996, partly becausenew projects have been delayed until thenew Stirling Council takes over. Alsothe situation will be greatly changedwhen the Gold Mine starts its buildingphase in the New Year. Ian Stalker,European Managing Director ofCaledonian Mining, reports that all legal/council formalities are near completionand expects to start building in January. He and his colleagues will wish to meetpeople and contractors soon. We have, for some time (along with the TouristAssociation) been lobbying against the"Argyll Tourist Route" which directstraffic away from our area at both Tarbetand Ballachulish. We have mentionedthis to Michael Forsyth, Secretary ofState, but have had a disappointingresponse. We hope to get the support ofKillin Community Council and theTourist Association in this endeavour.

Jack's Beanstalk
Killin Drama Club's production ofJack and the Beanstalk is progressingwell in rehearsals - oh yes it is, butMystic Meg watch out ... Killin hasits own mystic powers which will beably demonstrated by Dame Trot andSilly Billy in the January productionat the McLaren Hall.
The blindfolded Silly Billy, seatedcentre stage, can actually identify anyitems Dame Trot bor rows frommembers of the audience. A trulyamazing example of the paranormalhere in Killin.
Another highlight to watch out for isthe continuing duel throughout thepanto between the Vegetable Fairy, played by Glenda Mardon and asinister, evil Fleshcreep, played byKillin's answer to Vincent Price, ColinMcRae.
Tickets will be available from lateDecember, so buy yours early to avoiddisappointment.
May we, the Production Committee, wishall our readers and advertisers, the verybest of seasonal good wishes and may1996 be a great year for us all.
Nursery School, Killin
We are pleased to see Jenny Todappointed and on the job as Coordinatorbut we remember (Killin 25 March 1995)the promises (commitment?) of CentralRegion - "full time educational provisionfor the pre-fives for Killin and District".The staff? "A coordinator, a part-timetrained nursery teacher, three full-timenursery nurses and a clerical assistant!"
OK. All this needed European Money!
Well, with the greatest respect to Jenny,we've fallen far short of that promise. We didn't get the European money! SoJenny has to do the best she can indifficult circumstances and with limitedresources. Aren't we lucky the Regionhas people like Jenny, who manageagainst all the odds, to keep theeducational ship afloat!

As part of the fundraising programme for the above Leisure Centre, which willbe enjoyed by the school children and community of the area, Malcolm McLartyand Michael McLaren (both mechanics at Lix Toll) agreed to take part in a"Sponsored Water-ski".
Both were complete beginners. They got a brief period of instruction (15minutes) from Rosemary Third (Receptionist at Lix Toll Garage and qualifiedwater-ski instructor).
They attempted to water-ski for as long as they could for per minute sponsorship. While perhaps not as elegant as you see on the box, between them they stayedup for a total of 10 minutes 16 seconds. You may not think this is very muchbut we assure you if you've never done it before, it's quite terrific! They raisedthe useful sum of £123.10 of which £13 is still to be collected. The wholeevent was sponsored by Lix Toll Garage.
Well done Michael and Malcolm - we were there and saw how cold it was.
McLaren High School BoardMr David McKenzie, Education Officerfrom Central Regional Council, attendeda recent Board meeting for the followingtwo items - School Nurse/First Aiders.

Mervyn's Weather
The last of these contributions forKillin News was written on 31 Augustwhich coincided with the end of anotable dry, warm period. Since thenconditions have returned more or lessto normal, although the middle portionof September did produce, onLochtayside at any rate, a spell ofIndian Summer, this while Buchanand the North-east were experiencingrain, gales, flooding and muchdamage.
On 27 September Ben Lawers andother high hills had their first Autumnsnow above 3,000 feet. October onthe other hand satisfied those who, during the torrid days of July andAugust, expressed fervent wishes forrain and supplied us with over 10inches to date. This along withSeptember's 5 inches has put us insight of the year's average of 51inches. Due to extremely mildconditions, Autumn colouring hasbeen less intensive, some treesshedding their leaves in full summergreenery.

Our photograph shows the newest recruit to the Killin Fire Service, FionaChristie, the first woman to join our local Brigade.
Fiona joined in May as a part-time fire-fighter and so far "loves it".
She has not yet been at any major accident or disaster but hopes that she willbe able to cope if called upon. This is certainly reflected in the attitude of the"boys" who seem to think well of her in the service.
Fiona, originally from Fintry, enjoys the challenge and likes to think she isdoing something for the community. She now works (when not fighting fires!)in the Killin Surgery.

The Lay of the Last Train Bound for Oban German Trip
The Mail; at eve had ta'en its fillOf 'choochters' bound for Taynuilt'srillAnd deep its midnight run had madeBeyond Drumviach's hazel gladeAnd when the sun, his beacon red,Had kindled on Glenogle's head,The fireman 'Tattie' full o' zipHad settle doon to hae a kip.
Balquhidder' s braes hove into sight,All going well and no blue light,Wi' 'Neilly' at his vigil keepingAnd 'Tattie' on the deck fast sleeping,Alas their bliss soon turned to dread,Balquhidder's 'start' had turned tored.
Wi' 'Tattie' wakened frae his dreamsAnd 'Neil' near bursting at the seams,The guard announced in tones of woe,To Achnacloich we canna go,For just as we were doing fine,
This rock fell down and blocked theline,We needna wait a Beeching cut,The Oban line will noo be shut.
Our 'Tattie' then his piece box drew,'Neil' on the ground the tablet threw,Each looked to sky and sea and plainAt whit he ne'er may see again,Wi' hearts near broke and grimforbode,They came back frae the Oban road.
This 'Oban Mail' the depot's toy,For sixty years the 'Caley' s' joy,Will pass nae mair Cruachan's ben,Nor see Killin's sweet leafy glenBut what is worse for ' Caley's' pride,The shame, the woe, they'll neverhide,The final night on which it ran,T'was driven by an NB man.

Killin Nursery Proposed link with Kenmore Enterprise Group
We are pleased to note that the longawaited nursery for Killin and Districtis beginning to be realised. JennyTod, the appointed Coordinator, tellsus that she hoped to have the thingup and running before Christmas.Although it will not be quite aslavishly staffed and resourced asCentral Region Education Departmentpromised us back in March, as MsTod says, let's be positive about it.So we'll be positive!
The nursery classes Phase I, willoperate on Monday, Tuesday andWednesday morning for childrenbetween 3 and 5 years. Already, advertisements are out for two nurserynurses with whom Jenny will work.Phase 2 in the New Year willhopefully extend both hours and agesfor the nursery.
Other positive happenings: (1) a childminding course with creche facilitiesis up and running; (2) TheGlendochart Adult Group has beenformed and has set about gettingfunding, for a start with First Aidclasses especially related to childrenin the home and the nursery and later"Taster" classes for adults in Art,Upholstery, Aerobics and (3) thePlaygroup will by now have movedto the new nursery premises(beautifully decorated and equipped).Note also the nursery has invited Santaon Friday 15 December from 2.00 pm-3.30 pm. Following the meeting held on 29 Augustand reported in the last issue, asubsequent meeting was held on 24October between representatives of localclubs and elected organisations to discussthe suggested link with the KenmoreEnterprise Group. The members presentwere from the Community Council, LochTay Users, West End Salmon Fishers,Heritage Society, Tourist Board, AnglingClub, Killin.
News and Traders' Association: Theideas for possible projects received fromvarious sources were circulated anddiscussed. The general opinion of thosepresent was that most of these shouldalready be pursued by organisationsrepresenting the community who shouldlobby the existing elected and fundingbodies. It was concluded that there wouldbe no point at this stage in sanctioning aformal link with East Loch Tay but tokeep options open for co-operation inspecific projects and should EuropeanFunding become a possibility, be in aposition to take advantage throughliaising with the Kenmore Group. It wasagreed that there would be no point inhaving a Public meeting since thisgathering could not put forward a strategyfor discussion.
Representatives attended the publicmeeting in Kenmore on the 25th and itwas obvious that KEG did not havewidespread support from the area and thecommittee was still at the interim stage.Although there was a draft constitutionand a strategy in place, formal electionshad not taken place. It was agreed fromthe floor that before any progress couldbe made the membership would require
to be increased to 50 then call an AGMto ratify a committee and office bearersand decide future progress. There wasvirtually no support to form a link withKillin at this time but that a commonproject to improve the marketing of thearea promoting the existing facilities andamenities could be considered betweenboth ends of the Loch.

Bob McGregor: Local, National HeroThere was a time when the names ofKillin and of Bob McGregor were inthe news, particularly the MotorCycling News. You may have noticedthat the name McGregor still appearson Gordon Webster's shop.Bob McGregor was at one time theowner of the business. He was a keenshot and salmon fisher but it was hisprowess as a motor cyclist thatbrought him most acclaim.
Bob rode for the Raleigh team andlater for the Rudge in 1930. He wasthe only Scot to win the Scottish SixDay Trials and won twice in 1935and 1937. He tried dirt racing andthe TT but settled for trial events andwon 21 first class awards and a goldmedal in the International Six Day atMerano in Italy.
Bob was recognised as Scotland'sgreatest trials rider and won manytrophies. When not competing, hetook a 2% horse power Raleigh to thetop of Ben Nevis and was presentedby a grateful Raleigh managementwith a special gold medal. His skillsas a rider were utilised by the Armywhere in the 1914/18 War he was aSergeant Major instructor in the MotorCycle unit of the King's Royal Rifles. In the last War before Arnhem, Bobtrained Airborne troops on theirspecial small machines and alsoshowed Commandos the technique formotorcycling on sand and shingle.

The day was extremely enjoyable andas well as various woodland topics,we learned all about the famous battle. After visiting the Soldier's Leapseveral of the group attempted to jumpa similar distance on dry land. Noneof them would have made it acrossthe river!
We had our lunch by the River Garrywhich provided ample opportunity forwater fights, but in the hot weather itwas quite pleasant to have a coolshower!
Thanks must go to Mrs Frost fororganising the community bus and toJane Brown and Pat Campbell for alltheir help on the day.
Younger members of the Team alsohad their own outing. Tim Frost tookus up into the hills to Coire Riadhaitwhere we were able to enjoy real peaceand quiet. All we could hear whenwe listened carefully was the tricklingburn and the odd insect. It was agreat trip - thanks Tim.
During the rest of the Summer therehave been a variety of other activitiesand we hope to continue with lessfrequent meetings over the Winter.

Dear Sir
I refer to the letter from A C Millerin your Issue No 28 and offer thefollowing information.
The original names for the three oldadjoining settlements in Glen Dochartwith 'Lix' in their names were:
1 Lie Uachdarach (Upper Lix)2 Lie Mheadhonach (Mid Lix)3 Lie Iochdarach (Lower Lix)
which are now named Wester Lix, MidLix and Easter Lix (also known asAcharn Cottage). Lie (pronouncedLeechk) means "flagstone" or "hardslope". Lix is the Anglicised versionof the name in plural form.

Dear Sir
A C Miller asks if the verses, attributed to the late MacLeanLorimer and published in your IssueNo 28 (Sept 95) are correct.
On page 389 of the book "In FamedBreadalbane", there is reference to"Lix, Licks - the hard slope". This,I think, indicates that the versesprobably have no "foundation in fact"or perhaps Wade was using the localname; then again perhaps it was justfortuitous that "Licks or Lix"happened to be "fifty-nine".
Does anyone know if in fact Lix Tollis the 59th?
YoursJ C MacNab of MacNab
Dear Sir
I was interested in A C Miller'sreference in the September issue tothe origin of the name Lix in verses
attributed to the late MacLeanLorimer. It reminded me of the storyof the Glasgow tourist bus driver who,on passing Lix Toll, used to informhis passengers that they were 59 milesfrom Glasgow and the equally absurdtale that the name derived from thatof the Roman 9th Legion which wasannihilated by the local Caledoniantribes for daring to venture north ofthe Highland line.
The name Lix occurs in various guiseson early maps including Leeks, thepronunciation of which closely reflectsthat of the Gaelic name Lie, which isthe dative of leac, meaning a hard orflaggy slope.
The English plural derives from thethreefold division of Lie Uachdrach,Lie Meadhonach and Lie Lochdrach, that is Upper, Middle and Easter Lix,now commonly known as Wester,Middle and Easter Lix.
Had the English rendering been Liesor even Licks, we would undoubtedlyhave been spared the mythssurrounding the origin of the name.

Dear Sir
Ardchyle FarmKillin
The letter from Laura Bates (KillinNews Issue 27) struck a familiar chordin my memory as over the past 40odd years of involvement in amateurdramatics, I too, have suffered theoccasional bruised ego, quicklyfollowed by resentment against whatI consider to be unfair comment froma critic on my own performance in apublic production.
Regrettably, it is a hard fact ofamateur, or professional, dramatic lifethat once you step onto the boardsunder the public gaze you have to beprepared to accept the applause andcriticism with equal aplomb. I agreethat it was somewhat unfair tocriticise the producer as once theperformance is live there is nothinghe or she can do.
However, I would challenge one partof Laura's letter in which she suggests

that acting is more than performingto an audience. Not so. Hersuggestions form the basis of what itmeans to belong to a drama club andapply equally to the backstage staff, the ticket sellers et al.
Theatre is not theatre without anaudience. Acting is a combination ofillusion and stage craft presented toan audience in dialogue or mime. Themost important component of stagecraft, if dialogue is used, is theprojection of the actor's voice intothe audience. A common failing, especially amongst people new toacting, is to talk to each other on theset in normal voices which do notcarry to the audience. Problems withvoice projection are easily remediedby time and experience.
Some satisfaction might be gainedfrom a comment made by certainactors in the recent Edinburgh Fringe- "A critical review is written aboutpeople who can by people who can't!"
