Self PortraitSeurat started his career as an impressionist artist. As he grew as an artist he found impressionism to be boring and dull. He moved away from the apparent naturalness of impressionism and developed a structure, for more epic art to depict modern and urban life. He is considered one of the most important post-impressionist painters.

What is Pointillism?
Pointillism a style of the late 19th century based upon some Impressionist techniques and the application of scientific theories of the process of vision; begun by Seurat, who gave it the name Divisionism, it consists of using dots of unmixed color side by side so that the viewer’s eye may mix them into the appropriate intermediate color. Also called Neo-Impressionism. — Pointillist, n. — Pointillistic, adj.
The concept of pointillism is to create a solid space by using dots of two or more colors in an area. The colors mix from a distance, creating a new color.

Understanding Pointillism
•The Color Wheel of Pointillism
•Created through Optical Blending
• Placement of dots is necessary to create new hues
• Makes paintings look textured, but really it is hundreds of tiny dots
