Dear Friends,

Since I took over the mantle of Chairmanship from Mr. Suresh Reddy in Oct’14, this quarter has been very exciting with many interesting and high profile Indo-US events happenings. The visit of our Prime Minister Modi to US set the tone and the energy generated by him there became infectious all over and in our IACC activities too. I represented IACC on a panel discussion in DD highlighting the importance and expected impact of his visit to US and its spin off in the economic growth between the two great democracies. This was followed by the visit of US Charge de áffairs Ms. Kathleen Stephens visit to Chennai and IACC took the opportunity to host a dinner and networking with her for our members.

Similarly when South Carolina Governor Ms. Nikki Haley visited, we have organised another high profile reception and interaction for our members. For both these events our members came and attended with enthusiasm, participated well by asking relevant questions and seeking clarification for mutual benefit of Indo-US relationships. In fact both these important visitors appreciated the gesture of IACC and the value addition these events added. Later along with few office-bearers of IACC, we met the US embassy officials in their office and exchanged our thoughts and plans that we have for improving Indo-US business relationship for our members.

Currently we are working actively with US Commerce department to promote Select USA programme among our members to benefit from this initiative. Continuing our efforts to promote and include tier 2 and tier 3 cities commercial activities, we are planning to conduct US Visa awareness programme in Thirunelveli, Tuticorin, Sivakasi towns. This will also be a good opportunity to enlist new members for IACC.

I take this opportunity to wish all our members Seasons Greetings and a Very Happy and Prosperous New year 2015.

Best regards,N V VenkatasubramanianChairmanIndo American Chamber of Commerce &Chief Executive, L&T Valves LimitedChennai

u.S. Consulate General Chennai Makes Applying for a visa Easy!

Did you know that 13,500 people in Chennai’s consular district saved time and money last year by renewing their visas without visiting the Consulate?

Did you also know that you can apply for a business/tourist visa at any time, even without fixed travel plans?

That’s great news for visa applicants of all stripes!

How can I simplify the visa application process?

Our primary goal is to facilitate legitimate travel to the U.S. – for purposes of business, tourism, education, exchange, or authorized work. As such, we share your interest in a streamlined application process. It’s already pretty easy – we have same-day processing (biometrics and interview) for blanket L visa applicants, all applicants wait less than 25 minutes inside the Consulate on average, and 95% of visas are printed by the next business day. However, here are three tips for making it even simpler:

1. Don’t come if you don’t have to. Take advantage of our Interview Waiver Program. It’s available to children (14 and under) and older applicants (80 and above), even if they’ve never had a U.S. visa. It’s also available to applicants of any age who have had a relatively recent prior visa and are applying for a new visa in the same category. That includes applicants renewing a B1 or B2 visa that expired within the last four years, and H and L visa applicants renewing with the same petitioner within one year. As with everything, there are some qualification criteria, but they are easily met. More than 13,500 people used IWP last year, and we expect it to grow as more and more qualify. Please see http://cdn.ustraveldocs.com/in/in-niv-visarenew.asp for details.

U.S. vISA

2. Apply at the right time. That means early, if possible, and during our less busy seasons (typically anything outside of summer and the winter holidays). While you should have a specific travel purpose – like tentative plans for a business meeting – you don’t need a fixed travel plan to apply for a visa. That frees you up to come in early, which has lots of advantages. Some applications, especially academics or those in highly technical fields, may require additional administrative processing. Applying early – and bringing relevant documents, such as an invitation letter, resume, and summary of research(if applicable) – is the best way to make sure you don’t miss a scheduled conference or event.

3. Come at your appointed time. That means no more than 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. In order to move as many as 1,500 applicants a day through the building in the most efficient way, Consulate Chennai lets people in only 15 minutes before their appointment times. Come any earlier, and you’ll wait longer than necessary in the heat or rain! Remember, most people need less than half an hour inside the Consulate, so by timing things right, you can truly be in and out quickly.

For general information on U.S. visas, check out www.travel.state.gov. For appointments and information about the Interview Waiver Program, see www.ustraveldocs.com/in. For information specific to Chennai, see our official website: http://chennai.usconsulate.gov. Also, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (see below). We frequently host live Facebook Wall Chats where anyone can send in questions to be answered by a consular officer in real time.
