FAIRLOC® • THE INTEGRAL FASTENER

INCH BORE TORQUE DATA

Fairloc® is a patented component fastening system that is built into the hub of the part. How it works is explained on page 6-5.

The relationship between the clamp screw fastening torque and the torque at which the component starts to slip on the shaft is shown in the charts. These are typical values for stainless steel gears mounted on stainless steel shafts.

Figure 1 shows the torque at which the sample Fairloc® gears started to slip on the shaft. All gears and shafts were made of 303 Stainless Steel. Gear bores were within +.0003 inch of nominal values. Shafts had surface finishes of 16 micro-inch maximum and were within -.0002 inch of the nominal diameters.

THE BETTER WAY TO FASTEN ROTATING COMPONENTS.Solves…Phasing, Timing, Positioning and Frequent Removal Problems

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:Two slots are machined into the hub, one oriented radially, the other angularly, to create a transverse wedge which remains attached to the solid portion of the hub on one side. The resultant cantilevered clamping section has a tapped hole to accept a cap screw which passes through a clearance hole in the solid portion of the hub, and into a threaded hole in the transverse wedge section. As the screw is tightened, the cantilevered section clamps the shaft securely. The screw can be tightened and released repeatedly without marring the shaft or affecting its torque transmitting abilities.

PROVED MOST EFFECTIVE:For precision application – Lab tests proved Fairloc® to be superior to all other comparable fasteners. For high torque application – Torques up to 400 lbf in. are obtained with a 5/8" bore Fairloc® hub.

COUPLING SELECTION:Operating Torque:Establish the Maximum Operating TorqueIf the Maximum Operating Temperature will exceed 122°F, multiply the Maximum Operating Torque by the Temperature Factor, as shown below:

Misalignment:Determine the various shaft misalignments possible (axial, angular and radial) as a percentage of “permissible shaft misalignments” as shown in the technical data table for the preselected coupling size. Add each of the percentage values noting that the sum must be smaller than 100%. For example, .008” of axial misalignment corresponds to 25% of the permissible value of .032” for a Size 2 coupling.

Locate both the values for maximum operating torque in lbf in. and misalignment in % as ascertained above, on the corresponding axes of Diagram 1. The intersection of these two values must be below the characteristic curve of the preselected coupling size.

* If one of the asterisk designated values is at maximum, the other two must be zero. The percentages of maximum of each of the asterisk designated values, when added, should not exceed 100% for reliable service. For example, if the shafts that are connected by a S9901Z-G404 series bellows coupling are parallel misaligned .005, angularly misaligned 2°, and mounted such that the bellows will have to compress .009 from its free position when in use, then the .005 of parallel misalignment is 33% of the .015 total allowable, the 2° of angular misalignment is 40% of the 5° total allowable, and the .009 of axial compressive deflection is 20% of the -.045 total allowable. The sum of these percentages (33% + 40% + 20%) is equal to 93%. The safe load that can be transmitted under these conditions is 80.25 ozf in.

Precision Bellows Couplings are used for applications which require relatively high torque loads, combined with low torsional deflections. This series of couplings is manufactured by assembling two hub configurations in a variety of bore sizes to a common diameter bellows. Therefore, the specifications for all Precision Bellows Couplings are identical as follows:

NOTE 1: The maximum torque that is given above as 150 ozf in. is the maximum instantaneous or constant torque that the coupling can safely transmit for reliable service when the three asterisk designated values are all at zero. The following formula is used to compute the rated torque for a given set of application conditions:
