CENTERVILLE MESSENGER (096380) Free Upon Request-Published Weekly by Centerville Church of Christ, 138 N. Central Ave., Centerville, TN 37033-1427 August 2, 2017 Volume XXXVII –Number 29 I Hope You Know” Please permit this space to share with a few words of personal reflection. Since January of 2014, my Mendy and our children have endured and encouraged a personal pursuit for a terminal degree. During the last three years, it’s become abundantly clear why they call the pursuit of a PhD a “terminal” degree. Up to this point, words regarding this endeavor have been confined to private conversations, personal disclosure, or in some instances, biographical information shared prior to speaking engagements away from our beloved Centerville. This effort culminated on the campus of Amridge University (Montgomery, AL) in a dissertation defense on April 25, 2017, followed by a commencement ceremony the first weekend of this past June. Throughout these last many months and in keeping with the last 18 years of ministry, my Mendy has flawlessly supported, pushed, and tolerated these pursuits. She is more than one man deserves; of this I am certain and thankful. She has encouraged and insisted goals like this be set, believing they could be accomplished. Our Savior’s sacrifice is great and greatly to be praised for what it provides for all mankind (Romans 5:8). My Mendy has been and remains a constant example of sacrifice lived out, for the sake of our family and our children. She has made our lives and our wellbeing the aspiration of her heart. The women like my Mendy give of themselves effortlessly. Worldly eyes cast critical glances, as though they can do nothing more. My Lord said such a heart could do nothing greater (Mark 9:35). During this endeavor, our eldership, my eldership, has praised and encouraged this opportunity. In every way they have supported this effort and their loyalty shown to my family and me is certainly an envy among those who do the work of a minister. Their recent public words are gracious, but their private encouragement has been heard as well. I know the task of shepherding a congregation is enormous and extensive, because of being witness to their lives. I’m also certain you join me in a prayer of thanks and a word of praise for their lives. While this time has unfolded for our family and our lives in the manner that it has, I would be remiss if not calling on you to join me in recognizing the efforts and accomplishments of other members in our church family. We’re blessed to be part of a family that continues to gain skills and enhance abilities for the sake of serving others. Cyndi Hughes and Ruth Alderson completed advanced degrees and received additional education endorsements. Suzi Miley recently defended her dissertation through Freed- Hardeman University’s Doctorate of Education (EdD) program. Will Mayberry (PharmD) may very well be seen dispensing your medication at Liberty Pharmacy Clinic, as he completed his Pharmaceutical training. The risk of sharing such accomplishments is in unintentionally omitting others. If you’ve recently completed an advanced degree, let us know, we’d love to share in your achievement. Scripture says the body of Christ is to “rejoice with those who rejoice” and in so doing we celebrate one another. I think of these, and the highly skilled educators, medical professionals, technicians, financial professionals, laborers, law enforcement personnel, and so many more our congregation is blessed to share. Let these things remind you of the reach and the influence which can come from a small town church with God centered goals. I hope you know how blessed we all are to be part of God’s family in Centerville.

“I Hope You Know”

Please permit this space to share with a few words of personal reflection.

ANOTHER FANTASTIC FIFTH SUNDAY with the Coble Church of Christ. Weston Elkins, John Jacobs, Jake Martin, Riley Qualls, Colby Shelton, Grady Teet and Luke Worsham all did wonderful jobs in their roles as did Griffin Elkins, our Summer Intern, who brought a very thoughtful lesson from Ecclesiastes. Thank you to these guys for their willingness to lead. Thanks to all the girls and parents who came along for

support and to worship with the Coble church. Thank you as well to the Coble church for allowing our young men this opportunity to serve and lead. S O M E P R O D U C T I V E PLANNING MEETINGS THIS PAST SUNDAY. After a meeting with the Youth Deacons about the Fall and all that is planned, we met with the Parents, Youth and Volunteers after services. With that, the Fall is all planned and calendars should be available for August and September by this Wednesday. There are a couple spaces left to host a Lighthouse or Fireside. Just let me know if you would like to help! THE 20 SOMETHINGS just finished up some super nights

together eating and playing volleyball on Sunday nights. Thanks to Matthew Dotson and the others who have organized this and helped in any way. Around 30 on average have enjoyed this time together. Be listening for more events coming up for the 20 Somethings and don’t miss their class in room 222 on Sunday mornings! SCHOOL STARTS BACK THIS WEEK! It has been a quick but unforgettable Summer. It began with our Summer Spectacular of Vacation Bible School. Along with that came the 48th installment of Summer Camp at Meribah with Day Camp, Weeks 1, 2 and Teen Week. Those times will not soon be forgotten and will be cherished for years to come. Next 22 of us spent a week in Providenciales on the Turks & Caicos Islands as we worked side by side on painting, cleaning and other construction on the building. We also help conduct a VBS and will always cherish the time we spent with our church family in Provo. We concluded our Summer with our annual Cincinnati Blast with 30 from the Senior High and 20 Somethings. We made some great memories and will not forget this trip any time soon! Now that school starts back, (continued pg. 4)
