X. Teaching I enjoy helping students learn a discipline at its current state of development. I have developed 13 courses during my 19-year career at Purdue University, including a multi-disciplinary study-abroad course in Brazil on energy and transportation infrastructure taken by a diverse group of students with technical visits to oil company operations, construction sites for large ports, dams, subways and ethanol plants and a plasticity theory course that is taken by students from across the College of Engineering. In my teaching, I seek ways to involve students through active engagement during class. When teaching programming, for example, I emphasize collaborative, team coding. There is a repository for the class to which students commit code and are able to see and react to code written by classmates, even during class. In general, I often make use of problems that the class solves together or in small groups during lecture time. I have found this to be more effective and more fun than one-directional lecture-type teaching.

XI. RESEARCH My research has been very much influenced by a desire to understand the science underlying every problem that I have studied, to develop rigorous and realistic solutions to these problems, and to make the solutions accessible in engineering practice. In the process, I have done work of experimental, analytical and numerical nature at the cutting edge. Most of my research is currently devoted to problems in energy and transportation infrastructure and computational mechanics. Two current interests that are leading to important developments are semi-analytical solutions for foundation engineering problems that so far could only be analyzed realistically using costly FEM analyses and combined meshless-meshed domain numerical analyses. My research on the bearing capacity of piles, particularly the work on base resistance, which forms the basis for calculation of the base resistance of the open-ended pipe piles used in offshore piling, and the papers on testing of open-ended pipe piles are widely referenced and have been used to shape and validate components of methods proposed to design piles for offshore structures. My research on interpretation of the results of cone penetration tests, the main method of geotechnical investigation for offshore applications, is equally widely referred to and used in practice. I have continued to expand my activities related to offshore foundations, doing research on the installation and design of torpedo piles (dynamically penetrating anchors) in cooperation with UENF and UFRGS in Brazil, with funding from the Brazilian Research Council and PETROBRÁS. My work is often cited and used by practicing engineers and academics alike throughout the world. My current h-index is 18 based on over 90 Scopus publications and 25 according to the Google citations service. My i10 index according to Google is 43, demonstrating that many of my papers receive a substantial number of citations. My students with an interest in pursuing academic careers have been able to secure excellent positions in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe and Asia and have become contributors to geotechnical engineering knowledge. Awards received and invitations to deliver keynote lectures and participate in exclusive workshops recognize the contributions that I have consistently made over the course of my career. Media Coverage Results of research done by Profs. Monica Prezzi and Rodrigo Salgado and their students on the

use of mixtures of tire shreds and sand in geotechnical engineering projects have allowed the state of Indiana to save considerable amounts of money in cost of materials in the 2008-2010 period, savings that are expected to continue on a sustained basis. A sampling of media coverage of this research includes:
