What comes to your mind when I Ching is mentioned?

Probably it is all to do with fortune-telling, from yarrow stalks to tossing traditional

Chinese coins, or the recently popular Plum Blossom Oracle.

Many short courses in I Ching aim to teach about fortune telling (as this is always a strong

s e l l i n g p o i n t ) w i t h o u t necessarily going in depth

about the real essence of it. However, I Ching is a very comprehensive subject matter

that requires years of study. Once a person mastered I

Ching, it can be said that he would easily master the other subject of studies in Chinese

metaphysics. In fact, it is impossible to really master

Feng Shui without moderate understanding of I Ching!

Getting to know I Ching

One will wonder then, what makes I Ching so special,

and what does the study of I Ching entail other than a

hexagrams did not just appear out of nowhere in the midst of thin air? Let us look at a brief

history of this very ancient discipline.

It all began with the ‘magic turtle’...

The 64 hexagrams did not appear out of nowhere, but

t h e 8 t r i g r a m s d i d , a s according to legend Emperor

Fu X i 伏羲 (2800-2737BC)

discovered a turtle with magic square arrangement carved

on its shells, floating on the river one fine day. This marked the invention of 8 trigrams,

where the 64 hexagrams are further derived from. By the

time of the Emperor Yu 禹

( 2 1 9 4 - 2 1 4 9 B C ) t h e 6 4

hexagrams derivation (六十四

卦) were already recorded in

the scripture Lian Shan 連山.

Later on King Wen of Zhou 周文王 was said to be the person

who gave each hexagram a description according to its

nature, known as Gua Ci 卦辭or the Explanation of the

Hexagrams. King Wu of Zhou 周武王 son of King Wen, together

with his brother Zhou Gong Dan is said to have created Yao Ci or explanation of each

horizontal lines. Finally, it was under Confucius that further

commentary was added to make I Ching a complete text as we know today (referred to

as Zhou Yi or Changes of Zhou back then).

Having undergone such an evolution overtime spanning over several dynasties surely

made I Ching one of the most deep and elaborate text ever

written in human history. How can we expect to understand these thousands of years

process in jus t weeks or months?

Other than fortune telling, we can use I Ching for:

Basic facts about I Ching

Many people use I Ching for

instant answer in divination. This would work to a certain extent especially when we can find a

good I Ching sourcebook with d i r e c t a n d s i m p l e

interpretation. However, the answer provided in I Ching is a working progress. It does not

really tell you a fixed answer for the future: instead it helps

explain your current situation and possible outcomes from the various actions you may

take. Thus I Ching is one unique divination method where the

u s e r ’ s o w n a c t i o n i s a n important dimension to define its interpretation and result.

It takes an educated mind to really benefit from consulting I

Ching, therefore do consult a professional when in doubt!

I-Ching consists of 64 sets

o f h e x a g r a m s . E a c h

hexagram consists of two

trigrams (Gua). There are 8

possible trigrams hence

8 x 8 = 6 4 p o s s i b l e

combinations.

A hexagram is composed of six lines (yao) with two types:

yin(broken) and yang(continuous). Each of these

hexagrams represents various things in life, from body

parts, directions, animals, feelings to actions. On a deeper

level, they aim to explain the dynamics of life, its various

stages and evolution, and its ever growing, ever changing

nature.

The oldest method of casting the

hexagram I Ching is by yarrow stalk

method of Zhu Xi (1130-1200). This

method is gradually replaced by the

three coins method during the Han

dynasty, which is deemed simpler

and more accurate

When we cast a hexagram, the lines can either be fixed/

unchanging, or moving (yin line becomes yang or vice

versa). This what makes I Ching a dynamic divination

method.

And above all, I Ching will help you understand and uncover the mystery of how Chinese metaphysics work. Sounds exciting? See you in the next articles for more in depth explanations!

- Evaluating a house Feng Shui (before you take out your compass, assessing the environment, or even stepping out of your car!)

- Finding a missing person or missing items.

- Helping to explain a phenomenon, interpreting dreams or series of events we have just encountered in our daily lives
