SOLEMN ITY OF T HE BODY AN D BLOOD OF CHRIST

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

This weekend, the universal church celebrates the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. As I reflect upon this most wonderful moment in the church, I share with you a quote that, I pray, stirs in the hearts of every Catholic Christian. Saint John Paul II reminds us that, in commemorating the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the Church "does not only celebrate the Eucharist but solemnly bears it in procession, publicly proclaiming that the sacrifice of Christ is for the salvation of the whole world."

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi calls us—invites us—to come to the feast and literally be fed with the Bread from Heaven. Indeed, the church celebrates in Holy Eucharist Christ in His True Presence. In our modern times many question the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Furthermore, many members of our parishes who consider themselves to be faithful Catholics may attest that Eucharist is merely a symbol, an it. We must remember that Eucharist is a Who, a living person named Jesus Christ, Whom we are invited to encounter and consume into our very bodies so that we can grow in holiness—in His Image and Likeness. It is my prayer that each time we approach the altar in our church, bow before the Lord present before our eyes, and take Him into our very bodies, we experience a foretaste of the Heavenly Banquet.

Given this truth, today we conclude with the Rites of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation for those in our RCIA program who will be one with us for the first time at the Table of the Lord and marked (in baptism) with the gift of Eternal Life. Let us congratulate all who have entered into the Catholic Church at Easter and our own faith community of Saint Michael the Archangel. Each of you are welcomed in the name of Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that you—and each of us—gather for Eucharist as members of His body, the Church!

May God Bless You One and All!

Fr. Wayne Wilkerson, Pastor

Dear Parish Family,

We are happy to make available the fiscal year 2018/2019 Parish Financial Report. If you so desire, a copy of the report summary is available at the parish office.

In fiscal 2018/2019, St. Michael the Archangel Parish received total revenues (collections, bequests, and fees) of approximately $4.1 million. Our total expenses were approximately $3.7 million. Thanks to Fr. Wayne and his accounting team, this gave us a $400,000 surplus allowing us the opportunity to maintain a positive financial position and further reduce long-term debt created by our capital campaign which began in 2009. For decades, the parish has been acquiring land on the south side of Del Monte Street. The parish holds a $1 million dollar seller-financed note for property acquisitions purchasing the land to build both the rectory and the parking lot on the south side of the property. As of fiscal year-end, we had approximately $1.8 million in cash reserves and operating accounts, $1.3 million in long-term bank loans. As always, we thank all of you for your generous support and sacrificial giving.

Although this support is greatly appreciated, in the last three years (fiscal ‘17 through ’19), we have had notable challenges maintaining our parish collections and total revenues (inclusive of generous bequests and parish fees). Following both Hurricane Harvey and the publishing of a list of credibly accused clergy of sexual misconduct of minors, collections and revenues have seen a steady downward trend creating budget constraints and pressure on resources for people and services. A study was conducted to ascertain exactly how many families financially support the parish. It was noted that St. Michael Parish had 9,800 registered parishioners (families) on the books. Of that number, 2,800 contributed regularly through Faith Direct or Sunday envelope offertory collections.

Please know that much of the effort to operate within a balanced budget has been absorbed by the staff who work at St. Michael Parish and faithfully minister to our parishioners. With the help of all parish clergy and ministry personnel, we kept expenses at or below 2018 and prior year levels. While reduction in service and/or staff is good for protecting our financial health, the decision to reduce staff and some services offered by the parish is a difficult reality. Some consistent services are offered at a level now staffed by capable and generous volunteers. For this, we are truly grateful. Some staff have taken on additional responsibilities and have trimmed their budgets. It is only through your continued and increased generosity that we can maintain and hopefully improve our offertory collections to offer our excellent ministries. Please join us in faithfully, charitably, and generously supporting St. Michael the Archangel Parish.

Lastly, our school continues to operate well and is on sound financial ground. This year, we celebrated its 65th anniversary. Through the efforts of ongoing annual tuition increases and mindful spending, Dr. Kathleen Cox and her team have maintained a strong cash flow. The school annual fund and fundraising events have proved successful in the 2019 school year. Thank you one and all for supporting our parish school. School endowments (school faculty and scholarship fund) continue to be funded each year. Interest accrued allows these funds to grow modestly.

Note: Greater details of parish financial activities is available by contacting Bob Basye in the church office, Monday thru Friday.

May God Bless St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and School.

ST. MICHA EL T HE A R C HA NGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH

SOLEMN ITY OF T HE BODY AN D BLOOD OF CHRIST

A very fond farewell to our Parochial Vicar

Fr. Michael Applegate Thank you for your

service to our parish!

A Letter from Fr. Michael Applegate to the Parishioners of St. Michael the Archangel

I want to first say thank you to each of you for my time at St. Michael’s. It has been filled with wonderful memories of the great people that I have met here. The last three years have seemed to go quickly, and I cannot believe that I have already been here for this long.

We have been through a lot during my time at St. Michael’s: From Hurricane Harvey to COVID-19. I want you to know that I have enjoyed having this time to get to know y’all. I do wish that there could be an opportunity to visit with each of you to say goodbye, but the current situation has not made that possible. Fr. Wayne and I will be planning a gathering in the future, when the time is right, so that I can return and celebrate my time here at St. Michael’s. I will be praying for you as you continue to follow God’s call in your life.

As you might have heard this past weekend, the Cardinal has reassigned me as a parochial vicar to St. Pius V in Pasadena effective July 1st. St. Pius is southeast of Houston and only a short 30 minute drive from St. Michael’s. I’m grateful that I'm not too far away from my family. So, in a few weeks, I will be leaving St. Michael’s, but I will not forget my time here, especially since it was my first assignment as a priest.

Please pray for me as I transition to a new parish and work to improve my Spanish. This is one of the main reasons that I am going to St. Pius. I would also appreciate your prayers for a holy and productive priesthood – for the people of St. Pius V and everyone else I am called to serve.

Thank you and God Bless.

Fr. Michael Applegate
